Group: You're probably right about that. Abrotriss smiles slyly at Nightspear. "I draw what I see, not what what others wish I saw," he declares with a twinkle in his eyes. "My mother taught me, she has a tendency to draw the weak points she notices of creatures she has fought," he explains to Rixa, before turning to the rest of the group, removing a candle and lighting it. "I noticed a bit of a pyrotechnics contest, so I thought I might join in." At no obvious signal from Abrotriss, the candle explodes into brilliant, blinding flashes. "Oops," Abrotriss says, clearly mortified to even those without their sight when he realizes his mistake. "It cannot last longer than half a minute!" he calls loudly, hearing cries of other blinded. Pyrotechnics SLA! ...I think he got really carried away, it's DC 14 or be blinded for 24 seconds. In my defense, my purpose was not to blind everyone, I forgot what it did and decided to roll with the consequences.
Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Group: Abrotriss wanders over to the group, standing next to Rixa, and generally looking scared by the large number of people. That is, until he notices how interesting they all are. The bronze-skinned man taps Rixa on the shoulder. "Sorry about that," he whispers to her sheepishly. "I can be a little single minded. Do you want to see it?" Screw the rules on the amount of time it takes, I'm sitting sitting this out on their account ;)
Aasimar Conversation: Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 3 Giving him a chance to bomb his check to notice her laughing. Abrotriss continues to glance around for a few moments, and then spins around as he finally registers. An odd expression comes over his face, and he hastily returns to his drawing, seemingly uncaring of the world around him. I feel like I'm laying it on too thick, but at the same time I feel like I'm not.
Celestial: Abrotriss still doesn't notice, even when Nightspear lands on his head and casts a spell on him, the drawing continuing to take shape. He glances up again, before doing a double take and glancing around. Abrotriss sighs when he can't find Rixa, and befins to close the book. And he can't see the beautiful blue-woman with a sparrow behind him because 30 Stealth. You should really get a penalty to Stealth for that hair, it would stand out like a sore thumb ;). Thanks for the guidance, now it's actually a masterpiece! Also, sorry about him going oblivious like that, I figure a guy raised almost exclusively by a wizard would be pretty singleminded.
Celestial: A full body portrait of Rixa is slowly taking shape, barely more than an outline, and only just recognizable as Rixa, with a few features here and there, and an amazingly rendered sparrow on her shoulder, if the sparrow is any indication, it will be just short of a masterpiece I completely ignored the time frame rules for artistry, but he's just sketching it until he has time to render it in color, so I feel justified, despite his taking 20. And as for Jawhar, you're thinking of the WoW kobolds, these guys are reptiles, and have a proclivity towards traps instead of candles and earth magic, but are otherwise pretty close to the same.
Celestial: Abrotriss seems not to notice her speak, having become completely absorbed in whatever he is drawing. He glances up briefly while Rixa is talking, but looks straight back down without seeming to even realize that she was talking at all. I agree that wordcasting is cool, that was mostly role play, I don't have the experience with it necessary to form an opinion, and I admit some of those examples are intriguing.
Rixa:
Abrotriss laughs at Nightspear's remark, and shrugs at Rixa's questions. "I have a spellbook," he says, gesturing with the book he is holding, the one he has been writing and taking notes in. "As for you're comment about our differing styles, it would take years of study for you to replicate even one of my weaker spells. Magic is easy for you, and from what I know of wordcasters, very versatile, but you can replicate only the simplest of spells, and my access to the specialized spells is the great advantage of normal spellcasting. The difference between an arcanist and a wizard is that I prepare spells from my spellbook like a wizard would, but they don't fade from my mind, and I can cast them as many times as I have the power. Other than that, it is difficult to explain, as I said before," Abrotriss shrugs, obviously frustrated over his inability to explain. "And no, my father is not an arcanist, he is a wizard, and a rather skilled one at that, but something, I suspect my mother's blood, makes me handle magic differently than he. There was little he could teach me, and he preferred to have only the company of his familiar, Seltherix, anyways. He was still sad to see me go, I was finally getting old enough to not be constantly underfoot," Abrotriss gives a rueful smile and adds a few finishing touches to whatever he has been doing, before looking up at Rixa, and then back down before snorting in disgust. He flips the page and begins anew, brilliant green eyes narrowed in concentration, not even looking up as the other aasimar approaches.
He had never left his father's tower before leaving to come here, so I feel justified in saying he has no idea who Desna is. Also, sorry about the long diatribe on wordcasters versus Vancian mages.
Jawar: There is a bit concerning you right at the end of that, feel free to show up at any point during that conversation.
Rixa: "Hello there, I take it you are Rixa's familiar. What might your name be?" Abrotriss smiles at the sparrow, speaking in Celestial with the easy familiarity of one raised to a language before turning back to Rixa. "And I guess you still don't know what one is, sorry, I got carried away. An arcanist is a little like a sorcerer, and a little like a wizard. It's very difficult to explain, you have to be one to really get it, but I manipulate the fabric of magic itself to do things no other arcane spellcaster can."
Abrotriss is the one who didn't know :).
Rixa: Abrotriss blushes, clearly embarrassed. "Actually, I hail from Magnimar. If it is a local religion, my only defense is that I spent my whole life prior to coming here in my father's tower," he says sheepishly, before changing the subject. "That word, it was a word of power. You are a wordcaster! Fascinating! If I may ask, which words do you know?" The whole time the two has been talking, Abrotriss's pen has been scratching along, but he occasionally flips to a different page and pulls out a bit of charcoal, talking through the pen stuck in his mouth.
Knowledge Arcana: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30
Rixa:
Abrotriss is obviously confused by Rixa's statement. "Song of the Spheres?" he asks, obviously baffled. After a moment however, realization dawns, and he gives a sheepish smile. "Is that a deity? My schooling was rather vague on the subject of deities. Give me a realm and I can name most of its inhabitants, but I know next to nothing of the gods. So you were born a human then? Fascinating, it must make for an interesting story. Would you mind telling?" a book and pen seem to appear in his hands, an inkwell balanced precariously on his knee, held well off the ground, and yet there is an ease to the pose that belies its apparent awkwardness. The young man looks eagerly at her. I just checked over DM waz up's page. It says that his last post was last night, so he hasn't been offline too long, certainly not long enough to rule out something simply having come up IRL.
Rixa: Abrotriss smiles humoringly at her. "Not an arcanist as in an arcane spellcaster, arcanist as in the kind of spellcaster I am." the brazen-skinned man pauses and glances her up and down. "If I may ask, what is your celestial heritage? I cannot think of any celestial that would have passed it to you." Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 10
The bronze skinned man glances up from his notes to notice that the size of the group, and his skin reddens for a moment, perhaps his version of paling? It would certainly match his expression, he looks completely overwhelmed. He notices Tessa, and starts to ask her something, but then sees Rixa over her shoulder. Knowledge Planes: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18 Another aasimar! She isn't another peri-kin, I'm not sure how that will go. Blue hair? Where could that be from? Well, more like what or who. Abrotriss hurriedly rises, luckily there were no drinks on the crowded table, but he did jostle his immediate neighbors. Walking over to Rixa, Abrotriss surprises himself with his lack of nervousness, all he feels is excitement at meeting another aasimar. Rixa: "Hi, I'm Abrotriss Contrar, Arcanist. It's nice to finally meet another aasimar. Might I inquire your name?"
A young man with black hair, green eyes... and bronze skin?! wanders over and sits next to the growing group. "Hi there," he says nervously. "You lot do not appear to be from this area either. I'm Abrotriss." he proffers no hand, but seems friendly enough. "What brings you three here?" The strange man gives the trio an appraising look, seeming to be more interested in their physical traits than personal ones. He even pulls out a book and jots a few notes.
I'm dropping the spellslinger and alchemist, I think I saw another goblin alchemist, so I dropped him and I'll get Abrotriss (the Arcanist) up to spec in a bit. Abrotriss:
2d6: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 6) + 6 = 14 2d6: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 4) + 6 = 11 2d6: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 1) + 6 = 10 2d6: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 4) + 6 = 14 2d6: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 5) + 6 = 15 2d6: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 3) + 6 = 14 Money: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 3) = 8 Looks like I'm sticking with a point buy, I don't like that array for a primary caster. Edit: That was quick, he had already been designed for Runelords and with a 20 point buy, so I only had to add 10 gold. I will reacquaint with the character and have a role play up in a bit.
Since the update status of the spreadsheet sounds nebulous, I'll post this guy here, as well as on the spreadsheet once I get home. Abrotriss Contrar is an Arcanist (School Savant) focused on shutting down other casters, with Rise of The Runelords in mind, but I could adjust him to any (he'd go well with Wrath of the Righteous fluff-wise from what I know of it). |
