Since its crash landing on the planet Akiton, the Wreck of the Returned has leaked volatile magic into the surrounding Sloughscar Hills. These effects have run the gamut from unseasonal storms, unnatural plant growth, and sudden bursts of magical energy to swaths of magically warped terrain, reality tears that transplant strange creatures, and regions of unstable reality that degrade matter entirely. In the ensuring months, these magical anomalies have become more frequent, more powerful, and more dangerous. When a sudden onslaught of magical catastrophes strikes all at once, First Seeker Sarmak dispatches teams of Starfinders to defend their allies, combat these threats, and counter this magical show of force with a concerted emergency response effort. When the dust settles, will the Starfinders stand strong and united? Or will they break under the magical assault?
This is an adventure in the ongoing Invasion's Edge metaplot.
GM Super Zero
The adventure begins as evening falls on Akiton, and many Starfinders are taking advantage, relaxing at outdoor tables as dinner winds down at the recently established Starfinder lodge in the Sloughscar Hills.
Go ahead and introduce your characters. You're encouraged to
describe what they’re eating or, if they’ve finished, how they plan to
relax and spend the night.
As the Sloughscar Hills are a dangerous place, it is generally understood that Starfinders will have their equipment on and ready at most times.

"Would you like some apari grubs to go with that tea? They're hot out of the fryer." The offer comes from Big Bite. A red-scaled, male ikeshti offers a portion of the contents of a platter to the borai. "I figured if an undead drinks, he probably still eats."
"These grubs can be deadly to obtain but are definitely tasty." Big Bite explains. "I figured if an undead drinks, he probably still has taste buds, too."
"I've got plenty left to cook. Got my fryer going outside this evening, which isn't the easiest thing to do in a thin atmosphere even before the sun goes down and the temperature drops." The reptilian Starfinder sighs.
"Growing up here on Akiton, my brood didn't get a chance to sample much from the planets beyond." He explains. "But, if I am to be a brood minder myself someday, there is no reason to repeat the past."
"While a brood of ikeshti young will eat any organic matter they come across, I would prefer my young to be well nourished and, perhaps, like me, develop some appreciation for some of the finer culinary choices."

Suddenly, the stars in the sky above begin to stretch, lines of light linking them in what first appears to be constellations come to life. As they join into distinct shapes, they shift and change, transforming into pieces, as if some celestial force took a jigsaw to the night sky. Moments later, the stars begin to fall!
This first magical reality warp is traumatic, inflicting Mental damage: 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (6, 6) + 5 = 17 to the PCs and all other Starfinders outside (DC 18 basic Will save); on a failure, a creature is additionally frightened 1 and can't reduce its Frightened condition during Rescue (frightened 2 on a critical failure).
First Seeker Sarmak (inquisitive male izalguun electrical engineer) bursts out of the Lodge, trying to reestablish order. He marshals Starfinders, sending Kiha (adventurous female ysoki rookie field agent), whom some of the team may have met on a previous mission, to organize a team putting out fires caused by the falling stars, and another group of agents to shore up damaged structures. “You,” Sarmak calls out to your team, “find and help any injured agents!”
Each PC can attempt a check to help their fellow Starfinders, using Perception to find injured agents, Medicine to Treat Wounds, or Diplomacy or Intimidation to calm or direct panicked survivors. The PCs
can substitute other skills for this check, so long as they can justify its use, but the DC may increase. Expending a resource such as a spell slot or a consumable can help.

Previously…
It’s hard to miss bright violet hair anywhere where you see it, but the lashunta woman at the nearby table makes it look ever-so-normal, as if every perfectly styled lock and layer naturally fell into its position. The digimesh cutaways on her carbon skin armor hint at a landscape of creamy skin emblazoned with the occasional tattoo, as if offering clues about treasures to be found there.
She lazily stirs her drink, watching nothing, yet apparently aware of everything happening around her.
“I’ll try one, if you don’t mind.” She leans in and skewers some grubs on an appetizer fork — wait, did she have that in her hand before? — then nibbles at the hot delicacy.
“Ooo… they’re fresh all right! I’ll need a fresh drink before another sample.”
“I’m Tifkaetha, by the way, but most people call me Tiffi.” She smiles playfully and holds up an empty glass, waggling it in the air. “Another drink, either of you? A girl can’t indulge in deep fried grubs without a good chaser…”
And then… disaster!
Will save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22 Success for half damage; takes 8 mental damage, 22 hp remaining
Her head snaps toward Sarmak’s voice, immediately taking in his instructions. “We’re on it!”
Tiffi turns back to her snack companions. “New business, guys. Let’s see who we can help… guess it’s a good thing we made our introductions before anything else happened! C’mon!!”
She steps onto a low wall at the edge of the patio. The extra height seems to give her even more authority. Her eyes jump from position to position around the wrecked patio and its crew of injured Starfinders. In a moment, she holds up her hands.
“Listen! We all just took some kind of crazy hit, but we need to focus. If you can move and walk on your own, help the person next to you. Hop to it, team!”

When First Seeker Sarmak eventually finds him crouched behind a large panel, Ivan can only offer a silent nod, still struggling to comprehend what he has just witnessed.
Spotting an injured Starfinder nearby, he focuses on something tangible and immediately sets to work treating their wounds.

Leading up to the incident ...
The silver-furred skittermander begins by introducing himself to all of you. His tone is even and unemotional in a way that is unlike most skittermanders you have met in the past, more like an android, as he says, "Greetings, nufriends! I am Flaxoniz. I would ask that you please notify me immediately if there are any needs with which I may assist you. Rest assured that I will evaluate the means of helping most expediently." Despite his more muted emotions and energy level, it is clear the enthusiasm he has for helping others remains consistent with other skittermanders you have run across in your travels.
Upon encountering Ivan, he says, "Ah, greetings friend Ivan the Scholar! I am glad to see you have survived since our last meeting, where we almost fell prey to the Corpse Fleet!"
The sky falls ...

The Starfinders have some mixed success.
While the Starfinders deal with the effects of the local reality warp, Society technicians confirm the source of the magical catastrophes is the Wreck of the Returned. In response, First Seeker Sarmak enacts emergency protocols, dispatching numerous teams of Starfinders in the region to counteract these magical effects, combat enemy monsters, and defend their allies in the field.
“The Wreck of the Returned is causing magical catastrophes all throughout the Sloughscar Hills, so I’m enacting emergency protocols. All available Starfinders are being dispatched into the field to help our allies, stabilize the regions, and counter these magical assaults. Your territory includes an Aspis Consortium camp, so start by checking in on them and providing help if it’s needed. Jax is in charge, if you can find her. Once you’ve done that, check your sector for more reality warps, and if possible, neutralize them. We don’t know how bad this is, so grab your gear and go. Some d-vees are prepped for you.”
The Starfinders have time to fully equip themselves (including buying additional gear if they wish), after which they can make their way to the d-vees, sturdy hover vehicles designed to endure Akiton’s deserts. Each can hold up to three human-sized or smaller creatures, so the team claims two of them.
There's also a supply cache waiting for them, with emergency supplies that weren't already used during the storm (so, based on your successes there). There's a tactical medkit, four commercial batteries, and four commercial medpatches.
The journey to the Aspis Consortium camp would normally take about 60 minutes, but the party is interrupted after about 20.
The next shift in reality is a time warp. The most immediately obvious effect is that the d-vees transform into archaic carriages pulled by robotic horses, but the Starfinders' own equipment also begins to warp. Their weapons begin to take on the appearance of primitive blades and bludgeons, while their armor slowly shifts into period dress from some pre-Gap era.
Each PC can attempt a skill check to negate the reality warp’s effects. A PC can attempt a Computers check to Operate Device to spur the robotic steeds out of the warp, a Crafting check to Repair to jury-rig fixes as the d-vees are transformed, a Piloting check to Drive the d-vees out of the warp area, a Performance check to inhabit the historic role and then segue it back into the present, or an Arcana, Nature, Occultism, or Religion check to magically reassert reality.
Ivan the Scholar
|
Ivan quickly transfers vitality from his network into himself to fully heal himself. He spends time to refill it before heading out for the mission. Before he goes, he picks one of the commercial medpatches and the tactical medkit.
Upon the arrival at the camp of Aspis Consortium, time is warped around that he needs to act quick by weaving his own magic to return everything to normal.

As the d-vees transform, Flaxoniz hooks his datajack into some interface somewhere and begins trying to adjust the protocols of the robotic steeds to spur them more quickly out of the zone.
Computers: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18

Tiffi watches with wonder as the d-vees morph into robohorse-drawn carriages.
“Carriages and horsebots… I haven’t seen a setup like this since that holopark on Absalom Station. Looks well done; good details. Let’s see if we can coax this warp back to normality.”
She dives into a combination of improvised whooping and docent-style historical explanations to bridge the past with the present.
Performance: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
GM Super Zero
Big Bite and Flaxoniz, in particular, have a successful approach. They spur the horses foward, and the party quickly escapes the area of the anomaly. Things immediately return to normal.
At least half your party succeeds, so you escape quickly with no consequence.
About 20 minutes later, the Starfinders encounter something else. Ahead, a field of wickedly sharp-looking knives stick up out of the ground, buried point first as if they fell from the sky in a deadly hail. In their midst is a circle that is clear of blades, but contains the sliced-apart remains of some arachnid-like monstrosity. A small creature about the size of a house cat with ill-fitting gray skin peeks out from under the carnage, where it huddles whimpering in pain.
It wouldn't normally be found on this planet.
If your Rk was a critical success, you gain a +1 circumstance bonus to any check to calm the creature.
If the Starfinders wish to help the creature, they must calm or capture it first.
If you'd like to try, you can (in ascending order of difficulty), make a Nature check to Command an Animal, a Diplomacy or Performance check to soothe it, or an Acrobatics or Athletics check to capture it.
Starfinder Tifkaetha
As the d-vees slow to a stop, Tiffi hops off and tries to get a better view of the whimpering creature.
“Well hello there… I’ve never seen anything quite like you before.”
She keeps friendly eyes forward on the creature while turning her head slightly to address the party. “Anybody know what this is? It sounds like it’s in pain. Maybe we could help it.”

Nature: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
"I have no idea what that creature is." Big Bite notes. The ikeshti scratches his scaly chin for a moment, then ponders aloud. "I wonder what it tastes like."
The reptilian Starfinder turns to the rest of the party and asks. "Shall I try to capture it?"
Big Bite tries to pounce on it.

Flaxoniz considers the creature, then glances to the others and says, "This creature is not normally native to this planet. It is called an ooranak, from the planet Nakondis, living in the mountaintops. It is a marsupial that sustains itself on electricity that they draw to their small prong horns."
He shakes his head at Big Bite. "I would see if we can perhaps calm it before we attempt more aggressive means."
I have electric arc ... Do I believe casting it on the creature will feed it rather than harm it? If so, I will do so, hopefully getting some sort of modifier ...
Flaxoniz holds his hands out calmly. "Greetings, little ooranak nufriend. I am Flaxoniz. Come with us and we will see that your wounds are tended to." Casting electricity arc if I think it'll help ...
Nature (Command Animal): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
Starfinder Tifkaetha
Tiffi watches in amazement as Flaxoniz gently approaches the little creature.
“Wow… maybe I should learn more of this nature stuff. The best I had was an interpretive dance.”
GM Super Zero
Flaxoniz coaxes the creature by feeding it electricity, and soon has it entirely calm. The starfinders notice several strange glowing threads in the creature's wounds.
It's not badly hurt, and with proper care should make a full recovery and can be returned to its home.
The exhausted Ooranak is content to curl up in a backpack or other container. It's a bit heavy, but if one of the Starfinders carries it they might find its presence helpful.
It's 2 Bulk.
The blades also look like functional, if unusual, knives. Each Starfinder can collect one; they find that if they take a second, the first one they picked up returns to exactly where it was before they touched it.
You can each claim one advanced knife.

Arcana: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
"Seems that dead, spidery thing--likely a warpsticher--was trying to keep this morsel grounded in our reality." Big Bite says of the threads in the creature's wounds.
He picks up one of the knives and eyes the ooranak. "So? Do we want to take a nibble on this creature now? Or save it for later?"
Starfinder Tifkaetha
“What!? No!!” Tiffi glares at Big Bite. “The little fellow is from another dimension. He needs time to rest… and we need to protect him.”
Tiffi kneels down and pulls a knife from the ground. Satisfied that it’s real and solid, she stows it with her gear, then gently lifts the creature and holds it for a moment.
“Uhhh… he’s a little heavier than he looks.”
She looks around the team then shrugs and maneuvers him into her pack. She carefully shoulders the pack again and resets the straps.
“Maybe we can take turns carrying him. I’ll take him first.”
Tiffi gives a pointed look at Big Bite, then turns back to the d-vees to continue the trip.

There are no further interruptions until the Starfinders reach the Aspis camp, which seems pretty interrupted.
The sprawling Aspis Consortium camp is in a state of chaos. Flickers of flame compete with bright lights on stanchions to illuminate the terrifying scene. Cheap prefabricated shelters disassemble themselves in stop-motion flickers and then suddenly are restored to their previous status. An ysoki woman calls out orders—“For Abadar’s sake, stop panicking! Don’t just leave things! You can flee with your arms full!”—as Aspis agents rush to abandon the facility.
From somewhere inside, a telepathic message cries out, “Don’t leave me! I’m cornered in the infirmary!” The ysoki pauses for a moment, then returns to loading a hovertruck with artifacts and gear, apparently deeming the endangered employee less of a priority.
There's a massive lava creature pounding on the door to a building to the south can't miss it.
The doors are all open as Aspis agents have been fleeing, with the exception of the one between the two creatures at the bottom of the map. The walls are 15 feet high, and the DC to Climb them is 15. Any obstacles on the map other than buildings you can treat as difficult terrain.

Flaxoniz determines that the warp in reality can be counteracted by magically reinforcing Akiton's reality--or just by imposing one's own will over it, though that would be slightly more difficult. It might be possible to predict where it will happen next.

The lava creature collapses as Tiffi shoots it. The lava spreads, but quickly starts to harden and cool.
Though you probably want to deal with your persistent fire damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4, Flat Check: 1d20 ⇒ 3

"Aid successful," he assesses, as the quantum field collapses.
Starfinder Tifkaetha
Tifkaetha holds out her arms and does a few turns in the cloud of extinguisher foam.
“Oh, yeah… so… good… thank you!!!” She giggles with relief as the cooling sweeps over her.
Ivan — Can you put some HP into Tiffi from your vitality network, please? She’s down 13 — 17 left of 30 total.

With that resolved, the trapped lashunta emerges and thanks the Starfinders profusely. Some of them may recognize Snyllen, who has been rescued by agents of the Starfinder Society before (Starfinder Society Scenario #1-09: Abduction).
Though he’s pompous, ingratiating, and weaselly, prone to taking credit for the work of others, he’s not ungrateful after Starfinders have saved him for a second time.
“Starfinders!” he exclaims with a broad grin. “We have to keep meeting like this. I know I’m hard to resist, but I feel like I’m in danger whenever you’re around. Fortunately, I know I can always count on you to pull me out of it!”
Jax looks both impressed and grateful—though she’d never admit it. As she flees in the back of a hovertruck, she calls “Consider us even!” and throws a bag of gear off the back of the truck for the Starfinders. It contains a radiant star mote, a ghost killer weapon upgrade, and two advanced frag grenades. After a pause, she additionally throws a second bag containing two 3rd-rank spell gems of force barrage and an uplifting aeon stone.
For the moment, it seems that nothing is wrong.
You have a bit of time to rest and recover, if you'd like.
