@GM
I was thinking that perhaps one of the other PCs would get me involved in the reform movement. Reading over the submissions, Olivia would be almost perfect. Perhaps after my confrontation with her family's patriarch, she approached me admiring my guts and divulged her plan to bring about social reforms and we work together. Heck, there is even a chance I squired under a family member of hers. I would love to work together with her to bang this out if we are selected together.

Background under the assumption Olivia and I aren't selected together:

Harald Tyrantsbane is Squired under a bastard of the Vernisant family, the only member of the order who would take in a non-human page and later squire. His name is Archibald Fern, Fern being the name given to Vernisant bastards. The man is a staunch traditionalist, but one with an optimistic bent. The old ways of the formerly great Taldor that have fallen by the wayside are what Archibald has instilled in the young and impressionable Harald. Harald himself is probably a bit more open to progressive reform, but shares the vision of Taldor as a nation under The Inheritor, much the way it was once the most favored nation of Aroden. The two are very close, like a second father to Harald. He disapproves of Harald's decision to get involved in politics and with the reform faction in general. Call him old fashioned, but he thinks the Lion Throne is fit for a Lion alone, not a Lioness. Despite this strain, Harald admires him too much for it to keep them too distant.

He got involved in political reform in response to the exposure of the mass corruption that Count Vernisant was revealed to be involved in by the Pathfinder Society (a result of the events of Birthright Betrayed).

Following that he found himself working with Jillia Zespire, a minor scion of that family who is a champion of social reforms and a grand champion of the cause of Princess Eutropia. He finds Jillia's goals to be admirable...but maybe moving too fast. His relationship with her is new and fraught with a bit of the feeling out process straining their closeness, but it was this connection that brought him into contact with Martella Lotheed. The two are partners of convenience with no real love for one another.

Sovereign Court

If I'm picked, I'd be more than happy to work out ways to know a few of the other characters, including Harald. Thanks for reading my backstory, and I'm glad it stood out to you.

Silver Crusade

@GM

Should our characters start knowing the incumbent queen? Or do we meet her near the start? If we do know her, do we make up how?

Err...I'd assume you mean Princess Eutropia? The actual "queen" (not sure what the actual title would be) is long-dead.

RHMG's Ranger is ready...

An Arena champ who's caught the eyes of nobles for good and ill.

My submission is a cleric(cardinal) of Abadar. A half-elf who passes for human, Deminus wants to do what's best for Taldor and himself. The social reforms that an Empress Eutropia promises just happen to be both.

Silver Crusade

well yeah, but she wants to be queen right? And sorry, I used the wrong word there.

Thought I'd post my build so that everyone could get an idea for what I'm doing at least mechanically. I'm the player with the seat saved. I don't have my backstory in there, and I may make some changes yet, but this is, largely, the character that I'll be playing in this.

So I actually made, no lie, six characters before finally settling on one to submit. The last two were between an Occultist and the one I finally decided on. Hillariously now that I've finished the backstory I see that someone else submitted a Cleric of Abadar. But I put too much work into this gentlemen to not go forward with it. So I give you:

Khalil al-Shirin Duvan Evangelist Cleric of Abadar. Having grown up very close to his Keleshite mother he longs to see the relationship between Qadira and Taldor improved. After the death of his father and seeing his mother's inability to inherit their estates he also wishes to help undo the backwards inheritance laws of the nation. The Loyalists and the Princess seem like his best shot at actually bringing about this change and after months of work he has managed to secure an invitation to the Exaltation Gala.

'Brief' History:
Khalil al-Shirin Duvan stands out somewhat among the lesser nobility in Taldor. Not so much for his appearance, which isn’t so unusual as to be especially remarkable. Khalil’s Keleshite heritage grants him bronze skin and dark hair. Both of which are perhaps a shade darker than the Taldan norm. Instead he has stood out due to his conscious choice to not downplay his mixed heritage. In a country so uniformly dismissive of outsiders having his mother come from a formerly hostile nation was generally considered a black mark against Khalil socially. But as he would be the first to tell you, his mother was one of the most noble people he has ever met. His mother was a member of the Balanced Scales of Abadar, a group of Abadar’s servants who sought to reclaim ill gotten or lost wealth and return it to its rightful owner or use it to better civilization. Due to an injury she retired from the adventuring life and instead became a traveling merchant. That was how she found her way to Taldor and would eventually meet Khalil’s father. Khalil’s father, Volari Duvan, was one of the lesser nobility who had made some small manner of a name for himself from his daring trade deals. There are some who are still hesitant to work with Keleshite merchants after the years of warring and hatred between the two nations. But Volari and Shirin were both open-minded and happy to make a profit. Volari’s wife had died during childbirth, bearing him a son and heir two years ago. As Volari grew to know and respect Shirin he eventually introduced the boy to her. Seeing how well she treated him convinced him, he proposed to her and they were married a year later. It was just under a year after that when Khalil was born.

Khalil had a relatively happy and privileged life growing up. Before settling down his mother had worked up quite a hefty fortune from her days as a merchant and his father’s connections kept their family provided for. He grew up listening to stories of his mother’s adventures before the injuries that to this day left one of her legs almost unusably stiff. To put it simply Khalil was a momma’s boy. He was almost always at her side. To Shirin’s credit she did everything she could to grow close to Volstov, Volari’s first born, but they never grew as close as Khalil and his mother. Besides much of Volstov’s childhood was spent being groomed to take over the family, since Volari himself was approaching retirement age. As the second son Khalil wasn’t expected to inherit. That left him with a certain freedom. It wasn’t much of a surprise when he joined the Church of Abadar, in his own way to follow in his mother’s footsteps.

At twelve years old Khalil was able to officially begin serving as an apprentice acolyte of the church. Although he had attended various holidays and services with his family this was his first exposure to the carefully organized and structured world of the Church of Abadar from the inside. It was also his first exposure to some of his peers among the nobility. Church service was still considered a perfectly respectable fallback for second or third sons who weren’t expected to inherit so there were a number of people in positions similar to Khalil. Most of them were Taldan natives and they were his first exposure to the rather harsh and insular opinions of Taldor’s upper crust. Racism and sexism were new experiences for him, having spent his early childhood seeing his foreign mother as the pinnacle of achievement for so long. This upset him, but it didn’t shake him from his path. Besides, the church was quick to stomp on any situation that got out of hand, they expected a sense of decorum from their acolytes. So, the young Khalil took the jeers and slights as motivation to prove that he could be better than his short-sighted peers.

If it had not been for the accident, Khalil likely would have happily entered the service of the Church of Abadar permanently. After a year as an acolyte he had been raised to full cleric and three years later he was on his way to being named a Banker and given oversight of counting house when news about his father and brother reached him. His father and brother had been in the country hunting with some other nobles. On the way back home, their carriage had somehow veered off the road one night in a storm. Due to the storm it was hard to say exactly when or what happened, but the twisted remains of the carriage lay with their broken bodies inside when a rider passed by the next day. And so it was that Khalil found himself standing to inherit his father’s estates. Which was frankly idiotic. Even when his father had been alive Khalil’s mother had managed most of their affairs, Volari had simply trusted his wife’s mind for numbers and investments. Yet in Taldor while a widow was respected and supported by the community, it was the male child that was expected to inherit when possible.

He was ashamed to admit that when he first heard it, after the initial shock and sorrow he found himself feeling just a little angry about the situation. Khalil had, had a plan for his own life. He had worked hard and earned the position that was coming to him and now all of that was going to be compromised while he was forced into a situation that he had never truly wanted. But of course, he would never speak any complaint of that. He filed his leave with his superiors in the church, who for the most part were sad to see him go, but expected no less. He would always be a Cleric of Abadar or course, his faith was strong, and nothing could take that from him. But his rise through the ranks of the Church were going to be halted as he focused on his family. He returned home to help support his mother and get everything in order.

Over the next several years he found that, despite his reservations, he enjoyed working with his mother to keep up the family’s affairs. They were lesser nobility, but they were responsible for a number of people in their small little bit of land along the coast. Money management and organization were second nature to him after his time in the church, but a part of his job had also been caring for people. Although the context and duties were different, that much was similar as he began to take on more responsibility publicly. More and more Khalil found himself interfacing with the various nobility who controlled the lands around his own and he found most of them wanting. Slowly but surely he tested the political waters and began to acquaint himself with the chaotic maelstrom that is the social life of Taldor’s powerful. He found that there were some, like him, who longed to see things improved for their people. Who wanted to do away with the age-old laws of inheritance and stale traditions of gender inequality. There were some younger senators who were beginning to cautiously show support for increased relations with Qadira—something that both Khalil and his mother hope to see. Finally, after months of work getting to know some of these Loyalists, Khalil managed to secure himself an invitation to the Exaltation Gala—the first chance he’d have to meet face to face with the people who really controlled the fate of his homeland. His life had taken a number of unexpected turns over the years but he was determined to always make the best of things. There was so much about his homeland he loved, but it held with it in the potential to be so much greater. He just knew that if he put his mind to it he could help it achieve some of that potential.

Posting in with a character concept I want to run by the GM before I get to building.

I'm thinking of building a Swashbuckler (Rondolero Swashbuckler)/Paladin (Chosen One). She's from a minor noble house that is tangentially connected to the Lotheed family, making her Martella's cousin. She'll start as a Swashbuckler at Level 1 before later gaining holy powers through the visitation of her divine emissary. She also has a personal stake in the debate of women being able to inherit titles as she's the first child of her family, and the vote would enable her to become the heir to her family's holdings.

Mostly, I want to make sure that the relation to Martella is okay. I was considering being her sister but the Noble Scion ability for her house... isn't stellar.

Mechanically, she's a dextrous falcata duelist. Since it technically works with the archetype I may go for two-weapon fighting with the buckler for shield bash, but I'm not sure.

Hello again! Sorry but it has been a crazy day. I have been able, though, to write a quick background for André Vernisant. I will do the crunch between today and the weekend.

André will start play (if selected) being a swashbuckler, but as soon as he levels up he'll reroll as an investigator (thus swashbuckler providing for some fencing training typical from the noble families). He'll be a skill monkey, good at all kinds of knowledges and able at some other skills. This can be adjusted with feats and skill selection if there's any other party member who's good at it, so as not to step on each other's toes.

Thank you and hope you like it.

Hi GM Placeholder! I would like to submit for your consideration Bimble Ficklebopper, a very old Gnome who has spent a lifetime advocating in support of the rights of non-human races in Taldor. Though advanced in years, Bimble looks to prove that he still has what it takes to fight the good fight--aided by a healthy dose of wizardly transmutation magic to keep his creaky body functional.

Bimble is old and is intentionally built with sub-optimal physical stat scores. I did try to keep his constitution somewhat high, however (though not that high by gnome standards). War for the Crown seemed like a rare campaign where being very old wasn't an immediate disqualifier. Let me know if you find the stats or the character concept in general problematic, as I can adjust or even offer an entirely different character.

After two days of thinking I sat down to make a character... and there were a lot of unchained rogues already. So I tweaked a little and decided to do something really outside the box that fit the concept I had (or as best as I could glue together) and I present to you: Bastien du'Vergier, minor noble and forcefully retired military officer.

Background:
Born to a minor noble house, Bastien was the middle child of his family. His older sister Justine was a woman who took care of him more often than his own parents, her time spent mostly at home. He grew up thinking of her more as a parent than a sibling, and as he grew he understood why she spent so much time at home. An intelligent woman, she never met a book she could not consume quickly or a topic she didn't have intimate knowledge of somehow. She proved to be the example of both intelligence and caring in Bastien's life, but always somewhat sad.

His younger brother Cauldon, a boy who took more after their father, was obsessed with station and luxury. Where Justine tried repeatedly to show him the same love, he rejected it in favor his father's company. As they both grew Bastien showed less and less desire to follow his father's Senatorial commitments and instead focused on more militaristic pursuits. Cauldon, instead, pushed himself to the forefront to become a member of the Senate himself. Always attempting to exceed where Bastien could rarely be bothered.

Justine, however, was groomed only for a marriage to a man of their parents choosing. A 'good match' that would secure their alliance with another of the lower noble houses and provide her with a lifestyle she needed, or so they said. Justine had no love for the man, thinking him a witless oaf and with no ambition. However her thoughts on the matter were of little importance to their parents, and Bastien began to realize the failures of their governing body.

When he came of age he signed up to become a member of the Taldan Army. Thinking to distinguish himself in defense of their great nation, he shipped out with hope in his heart of great heroics and adventure. It took less than two months to realize his skills were not to be tested. Most of the enlisted men were worked like dogs while nobles like himself drank and got fat in magically cooled command tents. Unable to reconcile this disregard for a soldier's service, Bastien became disenchanted with the military service he'd hoped would give him a sense of fulfillment.

By the time of his sister's wedding he had already made enemies among the other noble command staff by messing and drilling with the 'common' soldiers. His lack of diplomatic skill not withstanding, he earned respect by being among the men themselves, and earned even worse standing for receiving commendations from afar for his efforts. When he returned to attend the wedding his sister had already gone on a hunger strike in protest and his brother had lost all sympathy. In the days leading to the event she confided in him that she would rather die than marry the man, but Bastien pleaded with her to not do anything drastic. After the wedding he left, but only after securing her promise to take care of herself until he could return.

When he returned to his command he found that in his absence most of the enlisted men in his care had been assigned to be shipped to the Zimar Corsairs, used as soldier labor by the pirates. Rather than simply let them go, Bastien went with them, the first such officer to sail with the Corsairs in recent memory. With them he helped lead both the pirates and his men to victories up and down the coast against Qadira military vessels. He also gained some respect from the pirates by proving more than capable of participating in their nightly bare-knuckle competitions.

He insisted on their parley with the Andoran Eagle Knights from time to time, sharing information and supplies when needed. They held a foreign, but not unpleasant ideal about governance and the rights of the people. Something he found he shared, despite his stuffy upbringing on old Taldoran traditions. He earned distinction for his service when they helped take a Kelesh battleship in open water, being one of the first to leap over the enemy bow to secure a foothold. Though he admits his sword is more famous than he is in most stories considering the tales of the oddly altered falcata seem to grow more boisterous every day among the military men.

When they pulled to port he received word that his sister had become ill. In haste he returned home, leaving one of his men in his place as he left, and rushed to his sister's side. As he arrived her husband attempted to block him from entrance, saying he was not welcome in his home. Even his own brother attempted to keep him from seeing her. In the end a few well placed punches settled the matter and he discovered his sister was not ill, but wounded.

Beatings for her willingness to speak up against her husband had left her weak and bruised. Attended only by an old halfling servant, she was getting worse. The letter, it seems, came from the old halfling who feared she would expire if not treated. Her fear of being discovered was the only reason he didn't take her with him as he fled. Without thought he gathered his sister and took her to the local temple of Abadar, pleading with them for magical healing to aleve her pains. The clergy there were disinterested in her plight, saying she brought it on herself for disobeying her husband.

Knowing a punch to the priest's mouth would only delay his sister's recovery while he was in jail, he took her to the first temple he could find. A small affair attached to a bar. Covered in old wood paneling and smelling of pipe smoke and stale beer, the temple of Cayden Cailean asked few questions and tended her wounds readily. When she was well enough to move on her own he returned with her to their family home only to be met with anger from their parents. Anger he returned with the promise of public humiliation should they challenge the matter further.

His brother, angry for his lumps, had his career in the military ended and his pension cut short. Bastien knew in the weeks and months that followed that his favor in court life was only due to recent memory of his victories with the Corsairs and the tall tales of his bravery. Yet as he watched his sister recover in a small villa away from their family home, he began to realize something more must be done, and he had very little time left to be of real help.

Concept:
I may have gone with Brawler as the class, but I wanted to make a versatile combatant who wasn't married to teamwork feats or even combat. After a couple days of thought (and some Netflix binging) I found a good medium by taking Hundred Eyes and Aramis and meshing them together into a military officer who believes more in the common man than his own station in life. This just happened to be the best way I could think to express that.

Hi! I just noticed that, without much thinking about it, I named the girl whom André was in love with "Myrtille", whereas there's already an important NPC called "Martella". If that might suppose a problem, I can change it. If not, I've thought it could even lead to André improving (or worsening) his attitude towards her.

I'm tempted to join in on this... I've always wanted to give the Sword Binder wizard a try, and it might be fun to play a character related to the Church of Aroden trying to jockey for power and reform his church.

I'll have to think on it...

Kertuffle here.
I have made an avatar for Panos and combined previous posts for convenience. Have added

His Dreams and Ambitions:

Panos doesn't dream small. He is on the verge of becoming a wizard at a very young age and he plans on being the most powerful wizard of all time. This has not made him arrogant. Well, at least not extremely arrogant, his parents took great pains to tamper any superiority complex he had, but its hard not to treat people like the fools they are. So he plans to turn his vast intellect onto solving the problems of the Taldan citizenry, and intends to start with the Taldan infrastructure. He plans to build a caster's tower with an observation dome in the city itself. He plans to form his own engineering group to magically fix the roads. He even has a name picked out, Terramorphic Engineering. He plans to be a great political player in Taldan politics. Needless to say, not all these plans are consistent with each other, but the optimism of youth has Panos firmly in its grasp.

I do have some questions game-wise but darn, you have a lot of posts to go through. Answer when you have time. Thanks.
Questions:

1) Will you be using Capital and Downtime Rules?
2) Are you alright with the Prestigious Caster feat?
3) Are Leadership and associated feats (Panos is considering picking up a Torchbearer at level 5) available?
4) Are you all right with crafting feats and will they fit in with the campaign?

Intra-party discussion OR intra-party skirmish? Because LE devil-worshipping manipulator and LG Paladin of Iomedae seems a dangerous mix.

I've been having a lot of fun reading through all the cool character ideas people have put together.

I always have troubles coming up with something cool and by the rules.

Or maybe my "cool" ideas are usually closer to silly, crazy and/or insane.

Oh jeez, I already have one paladin vs quasi-evil game, no need for another...

@Placeholder of Doom: I humbly request that if you decide to go with Olivia or anyone similar (I don't think there are any others right now but characters are still coming in), that you not also take Ester. Thank you!

All I did was make the WHO first, then play mad scientist with the HOW. Like the time I saw someone play a Nature Fang Druid and was wrecking face as melee damage, then would back up and drop tons of lighting damage like some kind of World of Warcraft shaman. All while pretending to be the medicine man of a barbarian tribe.

Sometimes you just gotta embrace the insane.

I do, my problem is doing it by the rules, and without people wanting me in a padded cell.

@ GMPoD: If you're talking about the spellcasting feature in her profile page, I just didn't bother copying the details of how the spellcasting feature works to save page space. It's just normal druid casting :>

I was, just wanted to ensure I was not missing anything, all good then :)

Thanks for the reply. I’m now complete I think. Made a slight change to the flavour of the Senatorial Hopeful trait – hope that’s ok. The mechanics are the same, but this is a self-made man who's risen up and created a network of favours and influence, rather than someone who's from a noble family.

That sounds fine, I'm alright with a little reinterpretation on traits as long as it makes sense :)

@GM

Should our characters start knowing the incumbent queen? Or do we meet her near the start? If we do know her, do we make up how?

No, you start as agents of Martella Lotheed and should not really know Princess Eutropia. Its possible you have seen her, but probably in a waving at the crowd context rather than an actual conversation or the like.

@TheUnthinker, don't worry, I don't really select based upon party composition as a rule, so two Clerics of Abadar getting in, if they were amongst the best five entries would not be a problem.

@JDPhipps it sounds alright, with the provisos that the main family should be assumed to be sinister, and that you are quite isolated from the main branch, etc. Hmmm, two weapon fighting does seem to work with the archetype, I don't believe you would get Precise Strike with the buckler though, but always happy to discuss, and be proven wrong :)

@Tazo, I have only briefly skimmed at this point, but I have no objection to the ability scores, nor anything I have seen in a quick peruse. I'll be trying to go through and do proper reviews tomorrow :)

Oh jeez, I already have one paladin vs quasi-evil game, no need for another...

@Placeholder of Doom: I humbly request that if you decide to go with Olivia or anyone similar (I don't think there are any others right now but characters are still coming in), that you not also take Ester. Thank you!

I'll endeavour to avoid any obvious clashes like that, if such an instance came up and I felt both players were in my top five I would likely try to get someone to tweak their mechanics slightly to remove the problem. I'd likely ask the pair to jump into the discussion thread and brainstorm a few ideas to negate the issue.

Okay, thirty odd replies there was a tad daunting! Tomorrow I'll be taking a few hours to go through all the backgrounds I have not already reviewed. I am considering closing submissions on Sunday night - not quite official yet, but likely.

Very pleased with the characters so far, a very high standard across the board :)

Second Seekers (Roheas)

Harald is another LG character devoted to Arnisant, the hero of Iomedae from the Shining Crusade.

Me might be a bit less rigid than a Paladin of Iomedae though.

GM Placeholder of Doom! This is Robert Henry’s Ranger (dandy) Kunala, a black sheep of the Varima noble house.

I’m still working on the details of the backstory, the general idea is that his dancing partner, his sister Padmavati, was married off to a minor nobleman to pay the debt of their father. His sisters husband has become his patron, but he desires to see ‘woman’s rights’ brought to the forefront due to how his sister was treated.

My question for you is if Lady Martella Lotheed is from the city of Oppara, which is where Kunala grew up, due to his father being in the military. I was going to have her contact with Kunala be through a mutual dancing instructor (all noblewomen need to know how to dance). But if she isn’t from Oppara, that would be just silly wouldn’t it.

Agreed

6 spots (1 reserved)
22 Characters (1 reserved)

5 spots and 21 submissions =?= 1 in 4.2 chance of being selected.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Hey. Next year will you do my taxes?

Grand Lodge

Well, to whomever get's selected, you know you got the best of the best playing with you!

I think I'm gonna try a Ninja Maid.

I've made this before as an improvised weapon attacker who two-weapon fought with stilettos. Good luck with your build! There is a lot of fun to be had with these kinds of ideas.

And yeah, the competition for this game looks TOUGH. I've heard great things about this AP, but not many people seem to want to run it yet (not all books are out, which dissuades some folks).

Good luck

So Damrak, just what are your going rates for loans?

Spoiler:

Heh. I'm sure we could work something out.

More seriously, I'm planning on having him throw accounting/math problems at people as the verbal component of his Daze spell.

Bear in mind that, even though André Vernisant stars the game (if selected) being a Swashbuckler, he will turn to Investigator as soon as he gets to 2nd level and continue on that path for life.

I'm partial to stating an algebra problem and then Command Spell "Solve for X" :)

Of course that may be LE (Logically Evil)

This is Cyrene, Sanctified Slayer Inquisitor

The chances of any one person being selected are about 21%, which is closer to 1 in 5.

This called for a Battle Royal to improve the odds!

dat feel when you have troubles coming up with a background for a character...

Okay, sorry folks stinking last couple of days, missing dog passports and airport and vet runs, plus work, have made things very hectic and sleep very scarce.

So I will do my reviews and comments tomorrow, and the deadline will be Tuesday, with selection and game start on Wednesday, to give everyone time to respond to those comments. My apologies for the delay.

Sounds good!
