Chapter 3: "What Lies in Dust". Part One: "Within the Crux"

In Westcrown, darkness brings fear and death, the night haunted by the spawn of a terrible curse. Striving to free the city from its decades-old blight, the Irises must reveal a long-buried secret and a treasure locked away for ages. Their journey will set them against the scum of Westcrown’s underworld, denizens of the haunted night, and the very forces of Hell itself, all in an attempt to rekindle the memories of long-dead spirits with stories still to tell. Yet what those souls reveal might prove even deadlier than the city’s midnight curse.

Catina looks doubtful. "We'll have to check eventually, but this could also be done later. Or maybe by one of the other teams. We were sent to clear out the hideout itself, and I think we should concentrate on that."

With a shrug, Baolus retreats from the boarded entrance. "Very well, we'll do as you say. I can see the wisdom behind your words... if we find any opposition behind those boards, it could mean that we won't have enough stamina to complete the mission."

Moving back south towards the remaining door, Baolus points with his thumb towards it. "So, Petals, have you found anything immediately dangerous at the door, like a trap, or something? Since he was running towards it, I believe it might be safe to open, otherwise he'd have been affected..."

Meanwhile, Baolus grabs one of the light crossbows previously pertaining to the tieflings. He also got a quiver with 10 bolts. It wasn't his favorite type of combat and, to be honest, not his forte, by he'd rather be prepared.

Added the light crossbow and 10 bolts to his sheet.

The time has finally come to open the door to the south, the one Ostengo was running to so eagerly. After performing her usual search for traps, Petals steps aside and allows Baolus to open the door. As guessed by the Rundottari, the door wasn’t trapped, and it isn’t locked.

This large, open room has a bed, desk, and chair. Papers are scattered across the desk, and a large chest sits against the wall to the north. Two heavy chains are spiked to the wall in the northwest corner.

Just in front of Baolus is a towering, hulking tiefling with claws on both hands. This tiefling is almost impossibly tall, his skin is crimson and lucid, and he has a long, massive tail. He wears a fine spiked breastplate and apparently carries no weapon at all, although his claws seem like more than enough to cause pain in those who anger him. Behind the towering tiefling are two skeletal wolves.

Before anyone can react, Dravano steps forward and roars. His thundering voice resembles to the roar of fire burning down a whole forest. The tiefling is quick despite his size, and his attacks are even faster, so much that Baolus cannot avoid the first one in time. The ranger gets a nasty scar on his face delved by the tiefling’s clawed hand. A second claw attack follows, but this time Baolus is readier and move his head back just at the right time, preventing Dravano from hitting him again.

Baolus takes 3 points of damage!

Baolus grits his teeth as the hulking tiefling slashes at his face, being able to taste his own blood as it runs along his nose and cheek. "Wow... you are a preeety big man..."

Saying this, Baolus draws his axes and swings them downwards, and soon steps aside to make room for the others. If he steps inside the room, the others will be also be able to hit him, even if his hulking frame will shield us against the wolves... I hope he is furious enough to not realize this.

"Have you heard those words? I'm surely not versed in the arcane arts, but it seems something dangerous. Also, the brute isn't the one chanting, so we might have yet another adversary."

Faustinia unconsciously takes a step back as the hulking tiefling slashes Baoulus across the face. Unsure what this huge-clawed mountain of a tiefling is capable of, she points and shoots a dart of acid at him to gauge his defenses.

Petals’ dagger bounces of Dravano’s armor, while Faustinia’s acid dart misses the tiefling completely. Catina steps forward, but her glaive does not find a way through Dravano’s spiked armor. Then, profane words fill the air again as a spiritual mace materializes behind Dravano and attacks Faustinia, guided by some strange, evil force.

Lady Faustinia takes 4 points of force damage!

DC 17 Spellcraft check:
You identify the spell cast as spiritual weapon.

In the meantime, the skeletal wolves flock into the room where the group members are. Only one of them can squeeze past Dravano’s hulking body though, and as it does so, Baolus and Catina get the chance to hit it. Although the ranger actually hits the skeletal creature, his weapon proves particularly ineffective against it, dealing only minor damage to the undead beast. Catina’s strike misses wildly. Therefore, the skeletal wolf has the chance to attack Baolus as a form of mindless retaliation. Fortunately, Baolus is able to repel the assault, protecting his own leg with his hand axe.

Dravano roars in frustration as the wolf occupies the space he was eager to jump into, but quickly gets over the problem and attacks Baolus although the ranger can take advantage of the cover granted to him by the solid wall between him and the towering tiefling. Despite the wall, though, Dravano’s claws reach for Baolus face once, inflicting more scars to the Rundottari. Baolus successfully avoids the second attack pushing himself against the wall.

Baolus takes 4 points of damage!

After this, Janiven fires another arrow at the huge tiefling. “Have you had enough?!” The arrow flies directly toward Dravano’s neck and lodges in it, causing the fiendish beast to roar in frustration.

I WILL CRUSH YOU!!!” The tiefling voice is so powerful that you could swear the very ground under your feet is trembling.

The combined efforts of Baolus and Petals bring down one of the skeletal wolves, who crumbles to a dust of bones. The huge tiefling lets out a roar of pain as the acid eats through his ruby-red skin before collapsing to the ground. In the meantime, Catina stands ready, anticipating the attack of the other skeletal wolf…but something terrible and unexpected happens before that. Dravano’s wounds seem to suddenly heal themselves without any external help. Then the hulking tiefling opens his eyes, red as burning timbers, and stands up, apparently brought back from death without any likely reason.

In the meanwhile, the spiritual mace keeps attacking Lady Faustinia, but the noble wizard this time is prepared for it and successfully dodges the attack.

As Catina predicted, the skeletal wolf darts into the room, and when it does, the tiefling girl is ready to strike at it. Although she cannot destroy the undead, she deals at least some damage to it with her mace. The skeletal wolf immediately retaliates, but Catina keeps it at bay pretty easily.

She tries to firm comfort in movement, seeking the cooling air around her. The tiefling girl pulls herself up on the toes of one foot, spins an then slides backward to give herself room to swing. "Did... did you do that? That's how it has to be? You saw what we did to your leader.". She gives the glaive a twirl, then stabs it at the tiefling.

Petals’ song of light and hope springs loud and clear from her lips, filling the chamber with a melodious, encouraging tune.

Baolus charges forward and manages to land a solid hit on Palaveen despite the cover. “You’ll perish in flames!”, threatens the tiefling as he stares wide-eyed of the blood flowing out of his mouth, which now lacks several teeth. In the meantime, Janiven steps forward and fires an arrow at Palaveen. The arrow pierces Palaveen’s left thigh, and the tiefling grits his teeth. He’s clearly being overwhelmed. But right when Lady Faustinia and Catina have the chance to close the combat and put an end to the tiefling’s opposition, the fiend lowers his head, dodging Faustinia’s bolt, and parries Catina’s assault with his morning star.

Fools…, whispers Palaveen with an eerie smirk on his bloody lips.

All of a sudden, a burst of negative energy radiates from the tiefling, causing you to feel weak, fearful and tired.

TASTE THE ENERGY OF THE PRINCE OF LIIIEEES!

Filled with pureness and a true heart, Baolus, Catina and Petals resist to the foul energy.

I rolled the Will saves for you. Baolus, Catina and Petals take 3 points of negative energy damage.

Palaveen stares wide eyed at the heroes. “How do you…” he mumbles as he backs away petrified.
