Spoiler:
The party starts out in the stronghold of Greatwall not far from the northern border of Furyondy. It is C.Y. 585 at the start of the high summer month of Reaping. The war finished last autumn and despite the Pact of Greyhawk, the distant presence of fiends has never left the mind of the local lord, Count Artur Jakartai.
Once a village, there are now 3,900 people living in the fort, of which fully a third are part of the military. The rest are working in the fields to feed everyone, 14 hours a day. However the town relies on travelling merchants to maintain its strength with tools and other vital trade. Those brave merchants who do make the trek are able to charge 300 % for their goods, but few risk this journey. This grave matter is steadily increasing tension in the stronghold.

NPCs of Greatwall

Spoiler:
Jerrid, owner of the guard’s tavern, the Behir and the Beholder, is a friendly old man with several unmarried daughters. He manages to put some food on the table and keep standards up. His beer is cheap and plentiful but not very strong at all. A veteran scout with withered left arm, the rumour is that it came as a result of a demon spell. He employs a large bouncer called Senuv to keep the peace late on.

Pharris Cophalis is a lovely elven lady with a penchant for attractive men. She arrived from the Vesve Forest to avenge the actions of Iuz during the War. In particular to free those surviving prisoners taken to Dorakraa – all in the name of Olidammara the Laughing Rogue.

Perrah Snowenglen sits on the Guild Council in support of Count Jakartai. She is a powerful woman with a large home and several farms. Her farmhands act well fed and the reputation is one of hard but fair work. Perrah is tall and slim with a hatchet face. Her husband, Ty-Onon is a small mouse of a man but a renown farmer with skills in water and fertiliser. Their only son died as a squire in the battle of Chendl.

Manlon Harrennen is a Knight of the Hart and an active recruiter of soldiers and those with any trace of noble blood can become squires. The townguard do not allow his views to be heard all the time since they conflict with their Count’s programme of rebuilding. The handsome embodiment of a knight, his eloquence and forthright opinions are backed up by dumb honesty. His tale is a romantic one, the bards speak of his woman, the elf taken by the orcs from her wedding carriage. The chase and cold trail left the songsmiths with a story to tell.

Captain Gillmore
Gruff and solid Velunan, he is in charge of all military forces in Greatwall. A brave warrior with an agile mind, he is universally loved by his men for the way he promotes and supports them, even those not of blue blood. A longbowman by trade, the Captain has a soft spot for elves. Many regard the Captain as the true leader of the town.

Father Gar Kivon
The main chapel is one of Trithereon, with everyone flocking to the causes of liberation and freedom in the hope of finding whatever happened to their missing family members. The Father is an evangelist exhorting everyone to work harder and be braver in every way. He is all fire and brimstone, a seven foot tall half-elf with a massive wild beard and magnetic eyes. Behind the chapel is a small infirmary where the gentler side of the man cares for the sick and poor.

Sal Timaren
Owner of the Black Stag or "Dirty Deer" and a fan of warriors and the militia.

Furyondy

Spoiler:

Ruler: His Pious Majesty, King Belvor
Capital: Chendl (13,000 pop)
Furyondy is a fertile land that has suffered in the Wars. Chendl is still being rebuilt after its siege and that takes money that the kingdom can ill afford. As well the Seven Noble Houses of the Kingdom are not united behind their feudal king. The northern ones were bled dry by warfare, and now the southern ones are still paying heavy taxes. Many organisations offer advice to his Majesty.
The Knights of the Hart seek revenge on Iuz, supported by the northern nobles. The Highfolk and Vesve peoples also feel that way inclined. But the remaining army strength is made up of old veterans and levies, with no money for mercenaries. No one blames the King, since he kept them together as a nation during the war and still finances the odd mission to safeguard the kingdom.
The people themselves are generally kindly and generous, but may be less trusting in the north. Most believe that war will come again and this will be a fight to the finish. They are prepared to sacrifice everything to that end since Furyondy is a proud country with a glorious past.

Some Useful Links
Furyondy Wiki is a good source of general information on the Kingdom however note that the Common Year is 585 and everything after that may not come to pass. For instance the heir, Prince Thrommel, is only missing – not declared dead yet. The Wiki may help with information on Veluna, the Shield Lands etc in case someone wishes to come from further afield.

General map by High Programmer provides a higher resolution but less detailed map of the Border lands. Greatwall is about forty miles to the South West of Grabford.

The Party
The adventurers have had time to get to know the town, but at present everyone is either employed on guard duty for eight hours a day, toiling in the fields or working as an artisan. They may have grown up in the village turned stronghold or arrived more recently on one of the many merchant caravans that used to travel to and from Willip. But life is not one of glory now, more a case of hard work and boredom punctuated by the odd raid from humanoids. The PCs have gained some experience fending off these sporadic attacks but not enough to provide long term excitement.
