(A deliberately incomplete story)
“You will address me as Serjant! I think, wait, Serjant of what? Of who? I… I remember the horns. They cried for aid from the west, they cried for aid from the East, you could even hear them over the screams...”
Vrek was a soldier and a healer both. He worked for an aristocrat's army as the head of the Capsarii , essentially field medics and porters who got the wounded off the field alive, and keeping them alive long enough to either get to true clerics or at least to more sanitary and safe areas to begin to recover under more mundane care. While others were more skilled at healing than he, his natural charisma soon had him put in a leadership position.
“Choices had to be made, terrible terrible choices. I… oh Pharasma, I chose wrong didn’t I? That’s why they won’t leave me alone, muttering mewling… slap slap on the hands failed. They knock away the scalpel! Fool me once, shame on you, fool me a dozen lives or more, won’t stop haunting you forever. I would apologize if I could just remember what the choice WAS!”
Maybe it was misdiagnosing a disease incorrectly and setting a pyre of people who might have recovered to burn? Maybe he tried to save a woman he loved though the effort would take hours, rather than tending to many who had a much better chance of survival if they had just gotten the care first? Maybe he deliberately killed patients under his care ‘for the greater good’ only to learn it wasn’t necessary at all, and if he’d just waited…
“I carry Pharasma’s symbol, why wouldn’t I? I do worship her, you know? But also, her authority sets minds at ease. Sets me at ease, knowing someone else makes the choices of who is to live and how long and where it stops. I’m no cleric, I can’t heal by magic.”
Yes, Vrek can, but he either is only now able to as the adventure starts, or he has forgotten the moments he gained ‘oracle hood’ so forgot he could. Either way he’ll do it almost instinctively at first then get into the hang of it.
“What ever it did, whatever has them crawling all about me like lice, I’ll make it right! Just let me out of here!”
The voices in his head whisper and chatter, many seem to disparage him. He thinks its people who died because of him. They still talk to him and he to them, mostly as he tries to guess what they’re saying or complains about them pinching him or yelling at odd times.
(Personality)
He is charismatic in a sense that he commands attention, and could, if he were in his right mind, but an inspirational leader.
Sadly, his tendency to talk to that/those which are haunting him makes him look like a raving loon, but he's an IMPRESSIVE raving loon, by Pharsma!
Vrek wants to do good, but if wishes were fishes sharks would get fatter.
