Jander's mother, an umarried woman of the working class, died of illness when Jander was just developing his sorcerous powers. Among the items he inherited from her was an love letter that was sent to her. The name was smudged, but the letter had the wax seal of Orlovsky. After bringing this "proof" to the House and having it deemed unverifyable -the sender was unknown and the recipient no one of note, not to mention dead, Jander realized that he was on his own.
Jander realized that he needed to eat. Rather than work himself to the bone like his mother, he made some female friends (not without a little magical help) and mooched off of them while courting them. He grew somewhat addicted to polyamorous romance in the process.
The whole time, he never forgot that he should be a member of House Orlovsky, and often boasted of it, much to the dismay of legitimate members. They were actually the ones who sent him notice of the charter - it would be a good, discreet way for them to get him to stop dirtying their name with his promiscuity.
Janders saw this as an opportunity. He shall found a new land where all the women are beautiful and all heirs are legitimate.
