Background:

The Plane of Shadow does not only reflect environments, but sometimes individuals as well —those long lived enough to cast a reflection across reality, that is. Terendralix was one such reflection. A silver dragon trapped and forever tarnished by the shadow plane since she was a hatchling, Terendralix had never seen the light of day nor felt the warmth of a sun. Holing up in an ancient and dark mausoleum situated in a pallid reflection of a great city in the material plane, she bid her time hoarding what silver found its way into her world and obeying the whims of her mistress, the shifting lady of Ebon Scales.

Terendralix’s mistress took advantage of her nature: heaping on her rules and oaths to service that the young silver dragon felt compelled to obey, forever keeping her in the shadow realm and at its mercy. The mistress delighted in punishing Terendralix for any slight and the dragon, ever obedient, found herself craving the abuse of her dark liege.

One day, while polishing a silver mirror that was found near her manse, she began to notice that it showed not her reflection, but the visage of a young elven girl. The young dragon, intrigued by this magic, took her discovery to her master who informed her that all within the plane of shadow was but a reflection of something in another plane, Terendralix had found her reflection in the mirror. Over time she became infatuated with her reflection and — working through proxies, shadow servants, and the odd kyton — reached out to her.

Iranaset does not remember her surname, nor does she quite remember her parents. She suspects she was born somewhere in the river kingdoms, perhaps even the Elven homeland, but nonetheless she has been forlorn for as long as she can remember. At a young age she felt drawn to the teachings of those who worshipped the midnight lord, a god of pain and dispair, almost to the point of obsession. It oftentimes felt like there was something more to it than just blind attraction, as if she felt at home in the dreams and visions of beautiful pain he heaped on her. She felt like the Midnight Lord’s church called her to it, and even when she did find herself wanting to stray away, something would always lead her back. She eventually accepted her calling with glee and threw herself at the mercy of the church, traveling to shadowy Nidal to join its priesthood.

Over the course of decades she became an accomplished priestess. Her attitude, bubbly and quite out of place for someone who delighted in pain and torture, made her something of an outlier among outliers. Making their home in a gallery deep within the shadowlands and far away from the prying eyes of most, they began recruiting new members to corrupt: sociopaths and madmen, decadent misters with penchants for cruel fetishes, and those who have simply lost the ability to feel. Then one day a blue light appeared.

It was strange, but Terendralix’s mirror began to glow a brilliant blue one day. It hurt her eyes; eyes long accustomed to the pale landscapes of the shadow plane. As the mirror’s light grew brighter, Terendralix began to see her reflection, the elven girl. The two locked eyes for a long moment not quite sure if they could see each other. Then suddenly the elf in the mirror’s eyes grew wide with recognition and a toothy smile played across her face. I know who you are! the elf said, though her lips did not move. I’ve always known you were there, guiding me, reaching out to me, trying to steal me away from those who don’t understand me. And here I am to steal you; and I’m never giving you back! With those last words the light flashed and Terendralix disappeared into the mirror.

Looking back on it, she likes to think it was a gift, a match made possible only by the strange realm that is the plane of shadows; and for this new being, power came painfully. Iranaset received the shadow that had followed her for her entire life, and became one with it, the tarnished silver dragon Terendralix. Iranaset’s bones began to seep silver. Her jaw and teeth became a draconic maw. Two lacerations opened in her back, springing wings that flapped wildly in all directions. Her skin hardened and encased new rippling muscles and she vomited out an icy cone of frost that left a mirror-like sheen on the ground before her. With control, painful control, she took back her old visage, but she was not the same. Something new was made that day, much like the Midnight Lord was once a deity of love, corrupted by the space between the planes, something more than Iranaset or Terendralix emerged after the shadows became one. It had a name, SHE had a name: she was suffering, she was shadows, she was darkness. It sewed itself into her skin SHVL, Aus Sahvul. The mirror that once separated them, shattered across planes, reformed itself. Its slithers became a dense blade, a reflection of its new master nature. When SHVL stared into it, she saw her true self, a reflection of a reflection and a being undeniably both of the shadows and their mirror image.

After her awakening, she buried her true name deep, continuing to go by Iranaset. Those who had known her before could tell something was different and began to fear her, though she remained blissfully ignorant of their concerns. She eventually moved on, delving deeper into the Darklands to ponder her existence. It was there she met the Crimson Stranger, appearing to her in a dream of exquisite suffering. She was promised a significant McGuffin if she followed the Stranger and a chance to bring suffering to those who least expect it. Excited about all of the new suffering, Iranaset acquiesced, and soon joined the stranger’s plans.

Description:

Iranaset has long dark hair and deep brown eyes. When she smiles, she reveals a mouth full of polished silver teeth, accented with diamonds and white gold, that ping when she clacks them together just right. Her body is muscular and voluptuous for an elf and her skin is thick and tan. She stretches more than most, always bending and popping hardened bones into place to stay spry, and if not for the strength granted her by her dragon counterpart, she would easily find herself crushed under the weight of her own bones. She is a walking abomination, both familiar and alien. Despite her obviously elven features, she always looks as if something is lurking just beneath the surface. At times one can glance the beast within in her, ready to claw its way out and rend everything around it to pieces. Because of her heavy, dense bones, Iranaset weighs in at two hundred forty two pounds, though she looks as lithe as a typical elf female.

Iranaset displays her allegiance to the Midnight Lord openly. However, her demeanor and attitude are anything but grim. Iranaset is chronically cheerful, always brimming with delight and quick to laugh. She murders gleefully, tortures ecstatically, and loves painfully.

Her sword, affectionately called the Mirror Edge is a sentient being. It was once the mirror that allowed Terendralix to spy on Iranaset, and unbeknownst to either of them, it was very much aware. It facilitated the release of Aus Sahvul, and in turn its own freedom. Now the two, forever bound, walk freely between the planes, guiding each other to fulfill a purpose as mysterious as their wicked reflection in the dark.
