About Elurel Seadaughter

Background

Palabras was an adventuring cleric of Shelyn, a wanderer who would take on any romantic challenge that came his way. He was somewhat surprised when the result of one of these challenges was present upon his awakening in a tavern one afternoon. Palabras wasn't a smart man usually, but he knew what the girl's mismatched eyes meant. Naming the girl Elurel, he brought her to the town of Sandpoint, figuring it was just large enough to lose himself in, while small enough to avoid major troubles.

The townsfolk certainly welcomed another priest, especially one as charming as Palabras. Elurel was raised primarily by her father, with a succession of "aunties" as Palabras charmed his way through the town. He taught his small daughter of Shelyn's values; one she was big enough, he even showed her how to swing a glaive, giving her his old practice weapon to use. She spent her evenings at the coast - she loved swimming and diving, and often brought up small trinkets that other divers simply weren't able to find.

Not long after Sandpoint's "Unpleasantness" a few years ago, her father banded up with a few other adventerous souls from the town to go out and investigate a possible deeper cause behind the terror that gripped the town. They never returned.

Shortly thereafter, Elurel noticed the sound of the ocean in her ears wherever she went, even away from the ocean. It became bad enough that she was no longer able to hear the world around her; it did, however, have the positive benefit of drowning out the beckoning voice of the depths that offered her a new family, if only she swam farther out into the ocean, if only she left the human world behind. She practiced being able to pick up on the cues of others, and between a bit of lip-reading and body language, she mostly got by. This was when the town's sage, Brodert Quink, started exchanging reading lessons for the ancient Thassilonian trinkets she kept uncovering off shore. Becoming her unofficial uncle, he sparked her interest in reading and history, and eventually paid her in coin for her diving services. Her spell services also came into demand as her powers grew, and though no-one quite knew where they came from, most were willing to attribute them to Shelyn's blessing.

Now, as the Sandpoint Cathedral nears its completion, Elurel finds herself wondering if Sandpoint is truly where she belongs, or if that voice that used to beckon her in the ocean will come find her, and endanger her hometown.

Notes: Elurel is built on 18 stat points. The lack of a permanent family is intended to build strong ties with her adventuring party, seeing in them a "family of choice", though that does not preclude the possibility of romantic relationships. Her choice of weapon is unusual, but thematically appropriate for the Rise of the Runelords AP, as it ties in not only with her father and diety, but also with Karzoug the Claimer's choice of weapon as well. This further ties in with her Scholar of the Ancients trait, providing links between past, present, and future.
