Special Abilities:

------------------------------
SPECIAL ABILITIES
------------------------------
Normal Speed: Kobolds have a base speed of 30 feet.
Darkvision: Kobolds can see in the dark up to 60 feet.
Weakness: Light sensitivity. Kobolds are dazzled in areas of bright sunlight or within the radius of a daylight spell.

Wild Forest Kobold: You’re one of the barbaric kobolds dwelling in the forests of the surface world. Your culture shuns artifice, but teaches how to endure and hunt. You gain a +2 racial bonus on Perception and Survival checks. This racial trait replaces crafty. Stealth and Survival are always class skills for you.

Animal Focus (Su): At 1st level, a hunter can take on the aspect of an animal as a swift action. She must select one type of animal to emulate, gaining a bonus or special ability based on the type of animal emulated and her hunter level. The hunter can use this ability for a number of minutes per day equal to her level. This duration does not need to be consecutive, but must be spent in 1-minute increments. The hunter can emulate only one animal at a time.

The hunter can also apply one of these aspects to her animal companion. Unlike with the hunter herself, there is no duration on the animal aspect applied to her animal companion. An aspect applied in this way does not count against the hunter’s minutes of duration per day-it remains in effect until the hunter changes it. The companion’s aspect can be the same aspect the ranger has taken on or a different one. The hunter can select or change the animal foci on both herself and her animal companion as part of the same swift action.

Trapfinding: A patient ambusher adds 1/2 her hunter level on Perception checks to locate traps and on Disable Device skill checks (minimum +1). A patient hunter can use Disable Device to disarm magic traps.

Wild Empathy (Ex): A hunter can improve the initial attitude of an animal. This ability functions as a Diplomacy check to improve the attitude of a person (see Chapter 4 of the Core Rulebook). The hunter rolls 1d20 and adds her hunter level and her Charisma modifier to determine the wild empathy check result. The typical domestic animal has a starting attitude of indifferent, while wild animals are usually unfriendly.

Animal Companion (Ex): See Below.

Background:

The day that the great Agoshyrvor, "The Verdant" gave me my title, was the best day of my life. Even though he wouldn’t tell me what it means, I know it must be awesome. After all, who else was so vital and important to the tribe as Ak’iss the Witless! When those humans came and killed my tribe and our dragon, my life was ruined. The humans have to pay! Ak’iss the Witless will show them what it means to cross an honored kobold!

Ak’iss was always a bit dumb. And that’s saying a lot when it comes to kobolds. But somehow, that’s always worked for her. It’s unclear if it’s just good luck, or if her foolhardiness was enabled by her quick reflexes and natural connection to the wilderness. Whatever the case, when Agoshyrvor sent her out on suicide missions or to meet dangerous potential allies, she somehow always survived. The dragon was so amused he even made her the tribe’s official guide. A laughable role, but one that she took very seriously. Dragons didn’t often have friendly visitors. Still, there were the occasional visitors, most of whom tried to kill the kobold despite her eager friendliness, but Ak’iss was resilient… and stupid. She just thought of it as her job and took it as a greater challenge to guide them despite their aggressiveness. Somehow, she loved her job and her life. Agoshyrvor could hardly stand her so she was constantly out ‘scouting’ or on some other important-sounding mission. It was an arrangement that worked well for both of them, all told.

Everything came crashing down when a group of adventurers slaughtered her tribe and the dragon. She was, of course, out on a ‘mission’ and returned only in time to see the carnage. Following the trail lead her far from her homeland and out of the forest, completely. The humans returned with their bounty to a massive keep. Ak’iss had never seen anything so big, and she worked for a dragon! She would need allies to get her revenge.

And so, Ak’iss found herself at the gates of an orc stronghold. She had guided some orcs one time and they only tried to kill her once or twice. She remembered something about them hating humans. Maybe they would help her. Sadly, when she announced her name and title, they only laughed at her. They didn’t try to kill her, but when she insisted on gaining their help against the humans, surprisingly they let her inside. They said she would have to earn their help, through chuckles and outright laughter. They put her to work mucking out the animal pens.

Tedius and dangerous work, Ak’iss was diligent and careful among the massive beasts that the orcs kept. She would uphold her end of the bargain and then they would have to help her. Days passed before she met Bitey. That was just what she called him. The orcs didn’t really name their beasts very often. Bitey was a bit smaller than the other warcats and had trouble getting his fair share of meals. Ak’iss felt bad for him. She knew what is was like to be smaller. She started sneaking him food and eventually formed a sort-of friendship with him. At first, it was just she brought him food and he didn’t bite her. But over time, it developed into a deeper bond and before long, they were fast friends.

The orcs, for their part, thought it was funny that the kobold befriended the runt of the ambush (ambush=group of warcats). A long way from being able to bear a full orc into battle, he would be left behind in the battles to come anyway. But with war on the horizon, perhaps they could make some use of this unusual kobold and her friend.

Appearance and Personality:

Ak’iss is a smallish green-scaled kobold who is altogether too dumb to be anything other than naive and gullible. Despite her shortcomings, she has a few things going for her. A strong connection with nature and in particular, a dangerous-looking warcat she calls Bitey, and a considerable amount of experience with scouting and foraging make her more useful than she seems.

Talkative and friendly, she’s about the opposite of what you’d expect of a kobold. She proudly announces her full name and title to any she meets and she expects, though rarely gets, respect for it. One of her goals is to prove herself against the humans and earn the respect she feels she deserves.
