Making A Cheaper Bracelet of Friendship

The Bracelet of Friendship is super useful, with the ability to call allies to your side instantly from any distance. But it is a single use item with a cost of almost 20,000 GP. You have up to four charms, so each use costs you 4750 GP.

What I want to know, is what can be done to make this cheaper. Are there spells of lower levels that could be instead of refuge? What about shortening the distance an ally can be called?

For example, would using status and dimension door work?

I just dislike having a one use item be so darn expensive. What are your suggestions on making a lesser, cheaper version of this?

Other than a Jailers Ring/Prisoners Ring set you're out of luck. Transportation can be, and is often extremely disruptive to gameplay. Making it cheap means making it accessible to lower level characters than probably SHOULD have access to it.

Then what about creating an item of similar cost that has only a per/day cost?

To be honest, I can't think of a reason why a limited range item would be game breaking at lower levels.

It changes the picture when you make teleportation effects available to low level characters. Make it that easy to obtain, then your bad guys are going to be making use of it as well. One might as well say. "I don't see what's game breaking in making Wish available to 5th level casters." Just because you can't see the problem doesn't mean it's not there.

The forumulas for creating magic items are only a guideline. They can be easily misused to break the system by creating items far too cheap for their impact in the game. The standard items in the Core Book should be the benchmark to compare the relative "worth" of an item. And it's that worth that should guide you to setting a base price.
