Male Human (Ulfen) Cleric 10

"It sounds like we have company, Rupert. You make want to wake the others...unless it's another rabbit."

Agnar will plant his shortspear in the ground next to where he stands, keeping his hands off of it. He'll face the oncoming noise calmly, but keep a hand on the pommel of his cold iron dagger, sheathed at his belt.

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

"Let them come and show themselves for who they really are!" Rupert cries loudly into the wilderness, loud enough to awaken everyone else and alert them as to the situation. Rupert does not draw his sword, but checks carefully to make sure it is at his side.

The noise continues to grow louder, as everyone else wakes from the noise.

"What is it," Treshiell asks as she wipes the sleep from her eyes. "Has another rabbit decided to vist?"

Jhod seems far more annoyed by the interruption than the witch. "Damnable creatures," he yells, snatching up his bow. "Let a man sleep, why don't you?!"

Male Dwarf Bard (savage skald) 3

Edrukk simply grabs his crossbow and waits, not sure whether or not he wants it to not be another one of the stupid tricks that have been plaguing the party.

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Orin scrambles to his feet as well, snatching up his bow and arrow and strapping on his massive sword. "Better safe than sorry," he says.

About half a minute after you're awoken, the sounds continues to approach and finally a massive creature -- some horrific mix of owl and bear -- crashes through the underbrush into the clearing. It lets out a strange hooting noise and begins to move toward you, vicious claws raised.

Treshiell pauses for a second and then says in her normal, eerily calm voice, "That does not look like a rabbit to us."

Here's the map.

Should be Agnar, not Lirisial. Also, the map link is taking me to the Flickr sign-in page.

Whoops and whoops. Apparently I hadn't updated my macros in a while. : ) Fixed now.

Works now, thanks. Also, if I'm using the Lirisial roll, knock the bonus down by 3, which will put me at 4. Apparently, Agnar did not see this coming.

If Orin is still adjacent on Agnar's initiative, Agnar will cast shield of faith on him, then retrieve his shortspear as his move action.

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

I think I'm playing Orin this weekend, so he'll wait. Also, I realized I forgot to mention that the Owlbear advanced a full move toward you in round one, which is already reflected in the map.

Round 1
Initiative order:
Owlbear (moved 60 feet toward the party)
Edrukk and Jhod
Orin
Agnar
Rupert
Treshiell

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

Rupert taking a double move action cuts across the water, using the same tactic he used against the bear, and tries to circle around behind the owlbear for a flank.

Male Dwarf Bard (savage skald) 3

Edrukk takes a shot at the creature, as he tells Jhod, "If you plan on rebuilding here, I suggest you make peace with the fey, and focus on these types of threats. You'll be out here much longer if you do."

Diplomacy on Jhod 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

Round 1

As Edrukk's shot flies wide of the charging owlbear, Jhod seems to ignore his comment, calling out to his god. "Erastil, bless these companions of your priest as they strive against this unnatural monstrosity!" Casting bless, +1 on attack rolls

As Agnar casts, Orin fires a shot at the creature, hitting it in the center of its chest 6 points of damage. It lets out a strange squawk, its red-rimmed eyes rolling in their sockets, as Orin drops his bow and pulls his sword, ready for the breast to close to melee.

Despite Rupert's attempt to maneuver his way around the creature, it spots him and lashes out with a claw, slashing across the swordsman's back and pulling him into a rough embrace. 9 points of damage.

"Rupert is bleeding again," Treshiell says calmly, though she does step back. "We disapprove," she continues, glaring at the bear, though her voice doesn't change. Using Evil Eye hex, to reduce bear's attack rolls by 2; will last seven rounds.

Jhod, stunned by the savagery of the owlbear's attack, channels divine energy into Rupert's limp body, knitting a few of his wounds before he has a chance to bleed out. 6 hp healing, putting Rupert I think at -5 hp

dice rolls:

Orin bow attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25

Round 2
Initiative order:
Owlbear
Edrukk and Jhod
Orin
Agnar
Rupert
Treshiell

The owlbear pulls Rupert into its rough embrace and claws and bites at him, mauling him and then tossing his lifeless body to the ground. Yikes! 22 points of damage

dice rolls:

Owlbear continuing grapple on Rupert: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (20) + 16 = 36
Owlbear attacks: 3d6 + 12 ⇒ (2, 6, 2) + 12 = 22

1d6 ⇒ 6

Note that I suck at grapple rules, so please someone tell me if I'm doing it wrong.

Male Human (Ulfen) Cleric 10

Growling in frustration, Agnar will take a 5 foot step directly north, towards the pool, channeling divine energy to heal but withholding the healing gift from the great beast. (Selective Channel) He hopes that Rupert doesn't drown in the reflecting pool before he has a chance to assist him further.

Channel Energy Roll: 1d6 ⇒ 5

Don't have time to linger so i'd just thought i stop by and give a two thumbs up for the DMPC:ing of Treshiell :) I like what i see!

Hope Rupert makes it

Edrukk draws his hammer out as he starts to chant, moving as close to the owlbear as possible.

Rupert floats peacefully on his back in the water, which is quickly turning reddish pink around him.

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Jhod sights quickly and fires an arrow at the bear, but it flies far wide of its mark as Agnar channels energy.

With Edrukk chanting and moving to attack, Orin drops his bow and pulls his massive two-handed sword, closing with the bear, but like Jhod, his attack falls far short of the mark.

Treshiell's hand dips into her bag and she flings a small piece of seeming trash into the air, a sickly green beam streaming from her finger toward the owlbear, but like her companions it fails to hit.

The bear looks like it's about to slash back at the two forms in front when it suddenly seems to flinch. Moments after, you see what looks like a small dragon with butterfly wings breath something at it, causing the bear to swipe at the air for a moment before its attention turns back to the heroes.

It swipes at both Orin and Edrukk, slashing them both. 7 points of damage to both.

After the owlbear's swipes at Edrukk and Orin, they begin moving to flank the creature. Edrukk's attack misses badly, but Orin's hacks into the creature, sending blood and feathers flying and drawing an outraged squawk as its red-rimmed eyes roll toward the half-elf. 17 points of damage, 23 total

As Jhod drops his bow and runs toward the party's gear, grabbing one of the long spears Agnar had bought at the fort, his fellow cleric of Erastil again channels healing power, awakening Rupert, who chest feels like fire, despite being immersed in the cool pool. 4 points healing to Rupert, Edrukk and Orin

Treshiell bends down for a moment, picking up a small twig, which she shakes at the creature and then snaps, intoning "Fortune favors the bold, not the bear." Using misfortune hex

The bear, having been badly hurt by Orin, lashes out at him with claws and beak. One of his deadly paws appears headed for the ranger's chest when the creature trips, letting the half-elf escape harm. Still, it's not enough to stop the creatures beast from ripping into Orin's shoulder, sending pain lancing down his arm and across his chest. 7 points of damage

and misses.

Male Human (Ulfen) Cleric 10

Who would have thought adding half an owl to half a bear would make a worse beast than a whole bear? is the thought running through Agnar's mind as he desperately tries to keep his group in the fight. Once again he denies the beast Erastil's blessing as he releases it to aid his companions.

Channel Energy: 1d6 ⇒ 5

"Rupert? Can you stand? Our companions could use your blade."

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

I think I was at -5 hp, and then received 4 in round 3 and 5 in round 4, so I should be awake, yes. And at 2 hp :P

Rupert's eyes flicker open as he sees his friends still battling the raging owlbear. He scoots away from the bear and stands up, gathering his sword and preparing to attack.

Had to withdraw to avoid an AOO and risk getting outright killed by this thing... I can attack next round, though, unless motteditor rules I have an attack this round as well. I'm not quite sure how standing from prone mechanics work, but I think it's a move action.

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Probably no way to make an attack this round, unless you wanted to leave your sword where it was on the ground. Right now, I figure it's a five-foot move to get away from the owlbear, then a move action to stand and retrieve your sword. You could technically still use an attack action on a ranged attack, but pulling the weapon would be part of your move action, meaning you couldn't grab your sword.

Son of a b!&!!! Message board just ate an entire round of combat. Hope you guys don't mind if I just write it barebones, and not redo all the coding and rolls. Dammit! And I'm usually so careful about copying everything just in case, but didn't this time.

Edrukk hits, but Orin misses. Treshiell tries to use her sling for the first time, and sends a rock flying behind her. A look of surprise and annoyance flits across her face. She rolled a 1. Owlbear's total damage is now 36.

Jhod and Agnar channel healing energy (11 points total).

A large splinter of wood suddenly comes flying in and just out of the owlbear's head, though it doesn't seem to hurt it too badly. Immediately afterward, a burst of light explodes in front of it, but it seems unaffected by the dazzling display.

It turns and claws at Edrukk, sending the dwarf into unconsciousness, a blissful escape from the damage its talons inflicted. 20 HP total from the two claws, though the beak missed.

Post actions for the rest of Round 5

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

6 more hp from Jhod puts me at a whopping 8!

Round 5

Rupert lunges forward once more through the waters to attack the vicious owl bear.

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Rupert's stab takes the owlbear from behind as it's distracted by Orin's missed swing, and it suddenly falls with one last squawk.

Treshiell, seeing the threat is past, calmly puts her sling back in her bag as she walks toward Edrukk, Thaal crawling down her arm. The snake curls on the dwarfs chest as Treshiell leans down over him, quietly commenting "We did not know dwarves bled so much. So very red." With that, she places her hands on him and her chill healing power runs through him, causing him to wake with a loud gasp.

1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Jhod, collecting himself, looks around. "Maybe it is a little more dangerous out here than I'd realized. Perhaps Vandar will join me, to help make sure this place is safe..."

Male Dwarf Bard (savage skald) 3

"I'm sure Stevic wouldn't mind; I don't think he particularly cares for the crowd at the fort." Edrukk comments as he stands back up and cast CLW on himself a couple of times, apparently unphased by the blood on his body. Replying to Treshiell, "Dwarves bleed as much as any other, I would suppose."

CLW 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
CLW 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Agnar will move to the owlbear and check its status. If it is still alive he'll dispatch it with his shortspear. Afterward he'll send out one more wave of healing energy for the group. Gather round; last one of the day. Channel: 1d6 ⇒ 4 He'll dole out spells on request.

"I know that battle was a bit frantic, but did anyone else see a little butterfly-dragon and some extra magic in that fight?"

He'll pull the splinter from the owlbear's head and examine it.

At closer look, the splinter actually appears to be a small arrow.

Male Human (Ulfen) Cleric 10

Agnar holds up the tiny arrow for the party to see.

"It would appear we owe a debt of thanks to someone. Orin, perhaps you could extend our gratitude in their own tongue."

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

12 hp!

"Quite the mornin'," Rupert says, massaging his half-healed wounds. "And yeah, ah' don't know if'n I'd suggest livin' out here alone, Jhod. Vandar might even jump at the idea of gettin' out of that fort."

After they get settled, Rupert asks "Now what? Shall we continue on?"

"Hello, biggins," the dragon says in a piping voice, speaking common.

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Sorry for the delay, was trying to give people more time if they wanted to say something to the fey.

"I am indeed," the grig replies. "I'm Tyg-Titter-Tut, pleased to meet you Agnar Hrolfson. My friend is Perlivash."

The small dragon flits across the clearing. "Well, we needed to make sure you were good bigginses, since we don't like talking to bad bigginses," it says.

Male Dwarf Bard (savage skald) 3

"I am Edrukk, traveling story teller looking for a home to establish a new clan in."

I'm back. Glad to see that Rupert made it out alive :)

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Welcome back, Treshiell. We seem to have slowed down a bit, all, so let's see if we can't pick up the pace a bit. For my part, I think I'm done with what ended up being a bit of a busy stretch there, so that'll help.

"Oooh, I love stories," Tyg-Titter-Tut says excitedly, flying across the clearing toward the side Edrukk is on. "Are you looking for a home here?"

Perlivash, meanwhile, responds to Treshiell: "Bad bigginses are mean, and try to hurt folk and destroy things. Good bigginses don't do that, plus get rid of bad bigginses to boot!"

Male Human (Ulfen) Cleric 10

"Well we've certainly gotten rid of our fair share of bad biggins. Really big biggins, at that!"

Orin looks fondly at the two fey as he says "Well met my friends. I'm glad you finally trust us enough to show yourselves." Holding up the trinkets and foodstuffs he had pulled from his pack "I believe these are for you. Come sit with us and we can trade stories about the area around here."

"Oh yes," Perlivash replies, "there are many bad biggins, though we haven't seen the really bad bigginses in a while. But one left a bunch of traps not too far, which hurt people. That was a really bad biggin."

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

So sorry for being gone the past few days without warning. I had a hectic spontaneous weekend camping trip, and I'm suddenly super busy with trying to get home to visit the parents and still see my friends before the end of summer. I might continue to be quiet for a few more days, but by the end of the month I will be back and posting regularly again: my schedules are always more straightforward when I'm in school.

"Well we definitely aren't any bad biggins, in fact we've been tryin' to push the bad biggins outta this forest. D'you know the names or whereabouts of any bad biggins in particular?" Rupert inquires, finally speaking to their new visitors.
