Time goes slowly when you rest in enemy territory. Jaed arranges some pillows and lays down, the wounds inflicted by the snake still hurting, and wondering if Etam would have made it to the infirmary in time.

When he hears someone approaching the room he immediately jumps on his feet and unsheathes his swords. Carrakas looks makes him weary but Marzela's greeting calm him down. He listens to the conversation, distrustful as always, with his swords down but still in his hands. He only starts relaxing when he sees Marzela's healing spell. If they were here to kill us why would the heal us?

After a while he decides to sheathe his swords and talk:

"You said you talk to Sato. Did you see Etam? He did not look well when he left the temple."

After they tell him about Etam's whereabouts, he continues:

"I see they didn't tell you much. And I feel they are not taking us seriously. They have only sent the two of you." Jaed inspects them both. "Don't take me wrong, that guy looks ugl... er, scary and that healing trick of yours will come handy but we are in a temple surrounded by crazy fanatics that love to transcribe books while they are not hitting someone, that have its own temple filled with traps and keep a huge snake in the basement. Not only that, they are after some powerful medallions for who knows what. That's what took us here. They raided the tomb of the founder of my town, Kassen, and they probably took one of these medallions."

Jaed takes a deep breath. No time for complains. "We were waiting for backup before getting in that chamber in case something bad happens. But now we that are all here, let's proceed." He takes a step before stopping and turning around to face Marzela. "Do you think you could do that healing trick again? That snake was nasty."

The rogue enters the small chamber, inspects the ledger and the bags keeping an eye for traps. He then tries his luck with the chests.

Marzela explains that she doesn't know the names of the other two that came in with Sato, but they were both alive and being treated when she left, and also explains that Riker wasn't able to commit a lot of forces without evidence of what is going on.

After hearing the dual-sword wielding human's request for help, she also mentions There is a secret door that we can use on the way out that avoids the snake area, if you like.

She then heals the human, and waits to see if any traps go off as he works with the chests, before she proceeds with her plan to open the ledger.

"Etam," Finnrick cries "Please do get well. You will be missed." A tear rools down Finnricks cheek.

"So many have come and gone now its only Jaed and I left from Kassen. Lilly has proven to be a most welcome ally but I will miss those two, especially the strapping warrior" Finnrick is lost in thought but just then he hears a noise and instinctively looks for Etam to get behind. Remembering he is no longer with them he goes to hide behind Jaed. Millsy jumps down from her perch and seems to be bigger than before.

As the newcomers arrive he is taken aback by the beauty of the woman and the fearsome nature of the... man? Never before had Finnrick come across someone who looked so... Different.

He allowed Jaed to give, what he now learned was there new allies, the run down of their mission thus far.

"And I am Finnrick and this is my trusty companion Millsy," who hearing her name, gave a deep growl. One that Finnrick had never heard before. "It is oh such a pleasure to have you here" He says flashing a smile in the direction of the woman.

Upon seeing her healing magic Finnrick smiles and claps his hands "Oh you are a healer, how wonderful I too know a few things of healing myself" he turns to Millsy how seems to have taken a special interest in the tiefling and calls to her "Come here girl" the cat obeys, but slowly as if indifferent to the wishes of Finnrick.

the half elf lays his hands on the sleek black fur of the cat and asks Saranrae to close her wounds.

While waiting for the human to finish his sensitive work, Marzela responds to Finnrick's introduction with a smile, and crouches down to pet Millsy, if she will allow it.

Upon witnessing the healing, Marzela says

Indeed, you can. A gift of the dawnflower. I am delighted to meet a brother of light in these ... unusual circumstances.

She stands up from giving Millsy a good scratching (again, if allowed), and beams at Fennrick before turning her attention to the recently-snakebitten man and waiting for her opportunity to examine the ledger.

As she's standing there, she very, very softly whispers to Fennick

What's the human's name?

Ledger:
As you flip through the ledger, it seems to be a long list of goods. Flipping to the very end and looking back, it goes on for quite a ways: Bag of holding, sovereign glue, oil of invisibility, potions of gaseous form, +1 cold iron heavy mace, potion of cure moderate wounds, horseshoes of speed pearl necklace, +1 flaming longsword...

Interspersed between items are monetary amounts and every month or two there's a large deduction listed as "tithe" with an additional deduction for "transportation". It seems to be a large book of everything taken in by the temple, though it's probably only a small fraction of what they've brought in the past year. There's no indication of where these goods came from or any sign that they were gotten by illegitimate means.

The left chest takes some wrangling, but eventually Jaed manages to get it open. With a little more experience under his belt, he's then able to easily open the one to the right. Now starting to feel overconfident, he approaches the center and final chest. There's a soft click, and he's just about to pull away in triumph when a small needle darts out of the keyhole!

Attack vs Jaed AC 20: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11

Luckily for him, his premature triumph puts him just out of reach of the needle. More carefully this time, Jaed avoids the now protruding point and, more carefully this time, jimmies open the lock.

As might be expected, all three chests are filled to the brim with treasure, largely in the form of coins but with a few other things scattered in.
- 14 sacks, each with 250 copper
- 9 bags, each with 250 silver
- 4 bags, each with 250 gold

Jaed gives a cold thanks to Marzela before turning back into the chamber.

While he is meddling with the chests he could listen to the conversation between the two healers. Still grumpy about the departure of his friends he sharply replies: "Jaed. And it would be great if you could keep it quiet because I need to listen to the mechanism of the locks if we want to see what's inside these chests."

As he is talking the needle flies and hits the wall behind him. "Great! Another trap! This is incredible, I don't know how there is anyone still alive in this temple," and with a loudly sigh he starts emptying the chest.

"By the looks of this ledger and these chests these guys have been well spending the coins taken from the town folk. I wouldn't feel bad if we carry some of these bags with us in our way out."

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16

Not seeing anything else of interest he walks towards the door of the chamber. "I don't see anything here that may help in our mission but we still have the second floor to explore. I would go there after we take whatever is useful from the chests."

Marzela is surprised that she was whispering loud enough for Jaed to hear her question with the unaided ear. I really need to be more careful she thinks.

Still, she is glad to finally know his name, and hoping to calm his obvious irritation and get their relationship back to amicable (and honestly flat-out surprised that someone doesn't like her), when he turns around to walk back through the outer room, she thanks him honestly and politely for risking himself to untrap the chests, trying to charm him out of his bad mood.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (4) + 18 = 22

Whether or not that works, she moves into the room and examines the ledger, and then checks the three bags that were on the table before the chests were unloaded, hoping one of them is the bag of holding noted in the ledger, and that it contains some of the larger items referenced.

Loudly enough to be heard in the next room (but not too loud), she says Lily, you're a magic user, right? If you have a second, come help me identify these things. You probably are more talented at this than I am. I'll pass you the ones I can't get.

But this potion here contains a spell of gaseous form, this mace is magicked with some special charms to help in battle, and this last oil is oil of invisibility."

Figures that I would fail the same ones as Marzela.

Female Aasimar Inactive

To Jaed and Carrakas: Agreed, we should go. Let me just check if there is anything else here that will help us.

To Lily: The deep red one is a healing potion. You might want to carry that one, in case you get hurt and I'm not close. You're probably the most breakable.

Musings mostly to Lily, but just thinking out loud to anyone: Hmm, the ledger mentions horeshoes of speed, which is probably what those are (pointing to the horseshoes (a) that we couldn't identify). Not sure what the other stuff is though (pointing to b). Could be this here at the end (referring to the ledger) where it says "sovereign glue," whatever that is, but the list is long and I can't be sure.

We need to take this with us, in case we find out where these goods came from (she puts the ledger in her bag). Also, shouldn't we take as much of this (motions to all the treasure) with us as possible? Seems a shame to leave it in the hands of extortioners.

MotW NPCs Definitely not a vampire Slides | Knowledge Checks

Marzela is able to correctly identify one of the three bags as a Bag of Holding (Type I). Turning that inside out results on several fragments of what was once a golden chain falling to the table. The chain looks to be at least a hundred years old.

Jaed and Finnrick:
The style of the chain is similar to the fragments you saw hanging from Asar's and Kassen's necks back in the crypt.

The other two bags appear to be mundane. The first contains six complete sets of city guard uniforms, matching those worn by the local watch exactly. The second contains 23 silver holy symbols, representing nearly every good and neutral deity. Both Finnrick and Marzela easily pick out the angelic ankh of the Dawnflower among them.

INACTIVE - GAME DIED

"Impersonating guards or other priests? Not looking good for them."

Female Aasimar Inactive

Yes, at least we have some circumstantial evidence, if nothing else.

Marzela makes sure the Bag of Holding is right side out again, and then starts scooping things (not the chain, the symbol of Sarenrae, or anything sharp or breakable) into the bag of holding. When she is finished, she puts the breakable vials and the holy symbol into her belt pouch (not the CMW if Lily takes it), puts the broken chain back into an empty bag to carry so it doesn't get lost among the rest, and straps the mace to her pack (away from where she has stashed the Bag).

If someone jumps in to help, or wants to take/carry a certain item or hold the Bag of Holding, she is fine with it and goes along. She's just trying to gather everything so they can go.

She then looks around to make sure they have everything.

Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (18) + 12 = 30

If so, she says Ready to go.

OOC comment on weight and volume involved:
The compendium over on Roll20 says "The standard coin weighs about a third of an ounce (50 to the pound)" so I think everything here would fit
just fine... 20 pounds of gold, 45 pounds of silver, 70 pounds of copper, 30 pounds of guard uniforms @ 5 pounds each, then other miscellaneous items. Well less than bag limits, weight and volume wise.

Male Human Rogue 8 | HP 85/88 | AC 22 FF 22 T 18 | BAB +6/+1 | CMB +7/+2 | CMD 25 | F +6 R +12 W +5 | Init +11 | Per +13 (Trapfinding +21)

The clank of the of the chain attracts Jaed attention. With a curious look in his face he rushes back to the table, takes one of the pieces on his hand and carefully examines it.

"Wait a moment... I have seen this kind of chain before! It looks exactly like the ones that held the medallions back in the crypt," his enthusiasm rises. "They brought one of the medallions to the temple! If we can match these fragments to the ones in the crypt... but they won't let us open the tombs again..." he says speaking more for himself than the others.

With a determined expression he addresses the others. "Ok, now we have something to work with. Let's head upstairs and check for other ledgers or correspondence. There has to be some reference to the medallions. With that and these pieces we could convince the Society to crack these beggars down."

Haven't done the math on the weight, so I'll just take your word for it Marzela. :-)

After stuffing what everyone assumes are ill-gotten gains into the bag of holding, the group moves up to the main floor and then in to main worship hall.

Description for people who haven't seen it yet.

Worship Hall wrote:
Rows of polished, black stone benches surround a vast staircase that ascends in the center of this grand worship chamber. The thirty-one white marble stairs, each carved with one of the tenets of Razmir, climb to the top of a pedestal that supports a gigantic golden mask, the symbol of the Living God. During the day, sunlight would stream through the great stained glass window high on the eastern wall, pass through the eyes of the mask and reflect through a great emerald set into its forehead, bathing the room in shafts of green light.

Moving up the stairs and around the balcony looking down on the main floor, the group finds itself in front of the exquisite entrance to the rest of the second floor.

Doors wrote:
Opposite the grand mask stands a pair of tall double doors, made from shining silver. Carved into their surface is the symbol of Razmir, beneath which dozens of supplicants are portrayed holding up piles of coins, jewels, and other wealth to the icon of the Living God.

In front of the doors is a decent sized puddle with several fragments of ice interspersed through it. One door is wide open.

On the other side of the doors is a room with many doors, three on each side and a pair of double doors opposite the entrance. In the center of the chamber, a two-step dais serves as a base for a sculpture made up of dozens of masks, carefully forged into a humanoid shape. The first person enters, followed by the second. Quite suddenly, before the third person walks in, a voice booms out from the chamber asking, "Who are the true gods?" Just as suddenly as the voice came, all is silent.

After the voice comes out the rogue points out: "That's new. It didn't say anything when I entered the room before. By the way, if you look at the feet of the statue you will notice that it seems to be placed on a pressure plate of some sort. Maybe we have to remove the correct masks from it to solve the riddle."

Since Jaed has moved up to the statue, and she knows he was in this room before and didn't die, Marzela slips into the room and around to the other side of where he is working. She tries the double doors. Her first goal is to find a way past this creepy disembodied-voice area without bringing the whole temple down on them. However, if the doors are locked, she turns around and casts a spell.

Cast detect magic on the statue.

If the doors were locked and nothing has happened by the time she gets that result, she considers the problem of the pressure plate. Is there room on it beside the statue? Perhaps she could unload some of those bags of coins from the bag of holding onto the plate, which would keep the pressure plate down while Jaed removes masks?

Shield of Faith only lasts for 4 minutes. If we get past that point, Marzela will sheath her weapon again and try to help Jaed with figuring out the statue.

Looking at it, I'm not sure anyone is actually trained in engineering. Oh well. I also forgot to mention that the map is in my header line.

@Marzela: You do indeed double your bonus. However, a scimitar is only a x2 damage on crit and you rolled a x3. Therefore you did a total of 12 damage (7 base damage + 1 from first 1d6 roll + 4 on your modifier)

Marzela and Carrakas, well prepared for a fight, leap in to the fray and immediately begin swinging their weapons at the statue. Though nicks and dents form in the masks that make up its body, the creature is eerily quiet and doesn't utter a single grunt of pain in response to the assault.

"Oooh, this looks odd," says Lily. "I'm not sure my magic will work on an enchanted statue." She settles for unlimbering her bow and taking a shot at it.

Longbow attack, into melee: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

Female Aasimar Inactive

Whoops. Sorry for the mistake. I just saw "x2" and rolled twice, not really thinking that that would actually triple because of the damage I had already rolled. Thanks for the correction.

Two rounds of Shield of Faith down, two to go.

Marzela attacks with her scimitar again.

Attack with Scimitar: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Female Aasimar Inactive

Are we supposed to move our own people on the map? I wasn't sure, but my character needed to be closer to attack with a scimitar.

Also, here is my Knowledge: Engineering roll, which Marzela just realized she had, in case you still want it.

Knowledge: Engineering: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

Which wouldn't qualify to know anything anyway, so no wonder she didn't remember she had that skill. :)

Male Human Rogue 8 | HP 85/88 | AC 22 FF 22 T 18 | BAB +6/+1 | CMB +7/+2 | CMD 25 | F +6 R +12 W +5 | Init +11 | Per +13 (Trapfinding +21)

"Yes, this is completely new," Jaed yells as he unsheathes his swords. The statue slow movement allows him to step behind it, into a move advantageous flanking position.

As he moves around he uses his right hand to slash the statue, hopping he can damage it with his sword.

Sword: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23
Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Sneak attack: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 4) = 6+Disoriented

Summarizing, Jaed takes a 5 foot step to where the statue was before moving, uses his move action to prepare his swords and attacks with his primary hand. I supposed the statue is flat footed as it has not acted yet (even though it has moved).

Once behind the statue Jaed shouts "All praise Razmir!" trying to answer the question made as they entered the room.

Lily's shot goes wide, but Jaed takes the distraction to maneuver around the statue and slash at its eye holes in an attempt to hinder it. Meanwhile Finnrick pulls out his sling and attempts to hit the statue while avoiding his companions.

Sling: 1d20 + 5 - 4 - 4 ⇒ (9) + 5 - 4 - 4 = 6

His shot likewise goes wide. Millsy, not having a safe path to their foe, simply paces back and forth, growling menacingly.

The statue then turns its head, scanning those surrounding it and ignoring Jaed's words. It takes a short step back (5 ft step) before pointing its hand at Carrakas. The mask making up its hand shoots off and flies at the tiefling.

CMB vs CMD 20: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

The warrior however, simply bats the mask away with his shield, causing the mask to whiz around the room before returning to the statue.

@Marzela: If you wish to redo your round 2 action, you may. Otherwise I'm going to assume you step forward and then use your attack role from earlier (we weren't on round 2 yet when you posted it). Also yes, feel free to move yourself on the map. If for some reason you can't, you should describe where you move to.

The entire party is up again.

Lily grimaces momentarily as the mask flies off and whirls about, then knocks another arrow and lets fly.

Longbow attack, into melee: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

Sorry. Yeah. I moved myself up, and you can use the attack roll above, even though it is likely a miss. I'll try to be less postaholic.

"This thing shoots masks?! This temple is full of surprises." Jaed sounds more amused than frightened.

Seeing the statue move out of the reach of his swords Jaed maneuvers to the other side of the dais, intentionally stepping on the pressure plate on his way. 5 ft step to the northwest. As the pressure plate its in Jaed's way I suppose it is not an additional action to step on it but correct me if I'm wrong.

Once close to the statue, he directs his swords at it.

A variety of blows rain down upon the statue. Many of them it just seems to shrug off with its odd, iron mask hide. Carrakas and one of Jaed's blows do manage to hit, though Jaed's does not seem to do as much damage as the tiefling's.

Now with heavy cracks in some of its masks, the statue seems to pull in to itself slightly before suddenly exploding apart! The masks, however, don't just fall to the floor but instead form a mask swarm. The silent, swirling mass advances and engulfs Carrakas, Marzela, and Millsy, buffeting each of them.

Bludgeoning damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
In addition to the damage, all three of you have a DC 12 Fort save or become nauseated

CMB vs CMD 20 Carrakas: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11

Carrakas is once again able to bat the mask away, but Marzela is not as lucky as a different mask finds its way to her face and attaches itself. A third mask heads towards Millsy, but is unable to find purchase on her non-humanoid face.

Marzela:
DC 13 Will save. If you succeed nothing happens, but the mask stays on. If you fail, you attack Carrakas next round.

Party is up again. Hopefully it's not too hard to see, but the swarm of masks now a 10x10 red square. Made it slightly larger, so it could be seen behind the player icons

Marzela fights against nausea.

Fort Save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

Marzela struggles mentally against being controlled.

Will Save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21

Marzela is nauseated, and backs off from combat.

She can only do a move action, so she can't withdraw... not sure if she can back off in a way that prevents an AOO or not.

GM:
I actually don't think she can even make that Will save because it comes after the Fort save, and nauseated prevents you from doing anything that requires concentration or attention. However, it also prevents attacks, so your call. Is she automatically controlled, and stays in the swarm, waiting to attack Carrakas, or does the nausea prevent her from being controlled as well?

"Bee-masks! Watch out!" This time the rogue sounds genuinely alarmed.

How are we supposed to fight against flying masks? Jaed start slashing in the direction of the swarm.

Not very convinced of the efficacy of his swords against the flying masks he takes a step back.

How many masks form the swarm? Are all the same or are there some different ones? Rolling perception just in case:

Man, I can't believe the kineticist with a sky-high con failed the DC12 fort save. I will hang my head in shame.

At first, Carrakas seems to try to follow all of the various masks in flight, even managing to knock away the one that comes right at him, but trying to track too many things at once causes his head to spin. The masks running all over him, around and around, prove too much for him to handle, and he starts to gag. "Stupid masks!" he bellows out, as he stumbles out of the massive swarm to try to get his bearings.

My DR soaks 3 out of the 5 damage, so I only take 2. Move action to get out of the swarm. Free action to mentally cry.

"Get out of There Millsy" Finnrick hollers and the cat complies quickly, not sure what to do now that there are masks everywhere. Finnrick takes a small step back to gain some protection from their new warrior companion and begins to cast a spell. A small orb appears inside the swarm and begins to crackle with electricity. Marzela:
I wouldn't say that nauseated means you don't get to make will saves. It's more of a reflexive/reactionary thing than something that you planned to do, so you do successfully move out of the swarm. Also, swarm doesn't have reach, so it can't make AoO.

Lily bow: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Lily confirm: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 7

Everybody quickly dashes out of the writhing swarm of masks. Jaed manages to hit a few masks with his left hand before stepping back. As most people are out of her way, Lily also manages to fire an arrow and pin a couple of masks to the far wall. Finnrick summons a ball of lightning in the midst of the swarm, but it seems to have no effect.

It's rather hard to tell with their dense movement how many masks there are, but they seem to number in the hundreds ranging in size from large enough to fit a person to about the size of a hand. Most seem to be made of a dull gray metal, but a few look to be made of more precious metals. At least one of them seems to have a sapphire on it.

After the beating earlier as well as the couple of well placed shots just now, many of the masks are looking cracked and a bit fragmented. However, undaunted, the continue to surge forward and engulf Carrakas once more as well as Finnrick. Millsy gets an AoO.

Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4 If you take damage, you have another DC 12 Fort save to avoid being nauseated.

Will Save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

Mask-wearing Marzela, perhaps because she was feeling so unwell for a moment, is overcome by a feeling of wrongness. Why am I fighting Razmir? she thinks. Sure, Sarenrae took me in, but it seems so clear now. Greed and Power are the only true goals of life. Everything else is just for inferior losers who can't measure up. Well, no more; I will not fight my true, infinitely superior destiny. I can convince anyone of anything. Why am I helping the downtrodden? They should be *worshipping* me.

Praise Razmir and die, worthless human slug!

Surprised by Marzela's attack the rogue barely dodges the scimitar. "What the heck are you doing!?"

When he turns to face his assailant he notices the mask attached to her face. Something clicks in his head as he just saw some of the masks aiming for the faces of the people inside the swarm. The masks are trying to possess us!

"Marzela, take that mask off!" In an attempt to help her, Jaed tries to break the mask with his swords, being careful not to damage Marzela in the process. I think this should be a sunder maneuver, which will provoke an aoo from Marzela.

"come on Finnrick, just do it already, I'm positively sick of having to do all the work around here" the voice urges him to grab hold of the power deep within him and just then he feels it. Something behind his heart, something he hadn't felt before. "that's it" the voice returns. "now grab onto it, before another one of those horrid flying faces tries to get you again." Finnrick reaches into himself and grabs a hold of what ever it is that's inside him and just as he does he sees the world begin to change. Everything is getting bigger... No he is getting smaller. Happy July 4th to any Americans. Otherwise, happy Tuesday.

With the combined efforts of the groups, they manage to bat away the swarm of masks, which starts to move slower until the masks just sort of plonk to the ground, motionless. The masks on the two newest members of the group however, remain in place.

Marzela:
You do not feel any urge to kill the other members of the party.

Carrakas:
You're still suffocating.

Female Aasimar Inactive

Oh wow, that was horrible. Thank you Lily, I think I'm okay now. Jaed, I am so sorry for attacking you. I don't know what came over me.

Marzela reaches up to try to remove the mask.

If I can't easily, not sure what kind of roll that would be?

If she is able to get the mask off, she asks
Did anyone else get hit with a mask?

Then she looks around and sees Carrakas with a mask, and asks him if he is okay (without going near him, in case he attacks her).

Whether she can get the mask off or not, Marzela reaches up to the holy symbol at her throat and channels positive energy.

Channel: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 1) = 5

We should hurry and get into these rooms and gather up any documents we can find. The temple might already be alerted. I am certain we were making enough noise up here. We don't want to have to fight them all. Jaed, can you get us into those double doors?
