Are there any rules about how imprecise senses are supposed to work when you're wearing a space suit? Deaf blind vlaaka are a viable option because of their precise scent making up for it, but in starfinder exploring well.. the stars, often means you have to put on a suit.
For humans, just getting stuck smelling your own farts for an 8 hour spacewalk is not fun but for a blind deaf vlaaka that's beyond unsafe... without some means to make the suit work.
Sighted humans went through a lot of trouble to make something as tough if not tougher than the rest of the spacesuit but also be clear so our major precise sense could work. Starfinder magitech should be able to do the same thing for a sniffer... but since the rules don't say anything (or a lot of people can't find a rule if it exists...) I see a number of Vlaaka forced into a sensory deprivation tank unable to interact with the adventure.
Also, a lot of adventures in space keep describing the smell of the place even when people likely have the environmental seals on....
A few solutions.
Magitech: The suits provide just enough of what they detect outside to let you know its there. So if there's a dead body producing cadaverine there's just enough to give the wearer the experience without using enough to make them puke.
Magitek gortex letting particles in but not out would also work.
Physics. A vacuum isn't a total vacuum. Space has an actual smell (sometimes burny, sometimes like of all things, raspberries) Particles aren't sound waves, they don't need a substrate to exist in. If you have x number of particles of a substance per cubic foot or 5 foot square, its detectable.
I was thinking of basically a ping pong ball in a valve with some grease on it, the ball spins picks up whatever particles are just outside the space suits snout and then brings them in , gets scraped off and then re applied as it goes outside.
A rotating chamber or a six shooter type cylinder could also work if you could deal with the small amount of air loss. The cylinder in front of your nose rotates, gets pumped out, goes into the vacuum , loses whatever gasses it has left, picks up whatever is out there, and goes back into the suit where it can be breathed/detected by the vlaaka.
TLDR I think you could do this with actual engineering it would be an absolute breeze with starfinder magic tek.. ie something built into the suit without mentioning.
Also note That saying space is a vacuum there is by definition nothing there is equivocation. The game isn't going to distinguish between an absolute theoretical vacuum and 100 molecules of hydrogen per square foot most of space has, they're both going to explode your character the same.
