First timer VTT question

Organized Play General Discussion

I just registered for a Starfinder game at Warhorn. this is my very first VTT RPG session (and RPG as a whole). I am a little on the blind on what will happen at the beginning of the game. Do I need to provide something beforehand to the GM, like the link for my character sheet or OrgID? I don’t want to cause problems at the start of the session.

Can someone shed some light on how the procedure normally takes place before a VTT game using Foundry? Thanks.

Typically, the GM will also post a link to a signup sheet where you input your Org Play ID and other details needed for the chronicle sheet and reporting. This is true for all VTTs, not just Foundry. Look for this link in the Warhorn page for that session. (If the session date is long way off in the future, it may not be there yet.)

More importantly, Foundry GMs will generally expect you to import or enter your character into the VTT using the Foundry character builder, in advance of the game. If you need help with this, reach out to the GM who will assist you.

Hope the game went well!

Typically all you need to do is ensure you have a character that meets the Org Play rules built and ready to go for the game, an Org Play ID number and a very basic understanding of the rules to some degree ideally! Even those aren't truly required, so long as you make sure to let a GM know beforehand so they can be prepared you can ask them to have a pregenerated character for you to play, and almost every GM I've seen has been incredibly willing to explain rules and help new players learn as the game goes on.

Some GMs will ask for the info they need, to report the game so you get credit, before the game, others will wait til it's over but it's just a few basic things like the ID number and they can walk you through whats needed.

Just as a general note, you are never required to enter a character into a VTT for Society, just like irl any character sheet is acceptable in Org Play so long as it is legible and you can provide it to the GM as needed should they want to check something. That being said, if you're not planning on entering a character into a VTT and just using a paper/pdf sheet and typing /roll d20 or such please do let the GM know ahead of time so they're not surprised, it makes for a better game for everyone! :)
