Zootopia 2

Movies

B+ Not as good as the original but still really good. Much more straightforward good vs. bad subtext.

Spoiler free ish review:
What I really loved about the first one is that you could NOT have that plot without zootopias specific set up. 90 percent of the population is prey, making predators a minority. But its a minority with a weird fear/respect/power axis Despite being a minority predators like lionheart have a lot of respect. Despite people having stereotypes against bunnies, the bunny has stereotypes against foxes even after she tells her parents off for having stereotypes against foxes. A bunny that small really IS going to have issues if she runs into an enormous criminal. (yer dead fluffbutt). Its a wonderful , complicated mess and you just have to sort through it.

The conflict here is more generic and you could one for one swap out the bad guys and good guys with nearly any other setting.

The better conflict was Nicks pragmatic vs Judy's idealistic view of the world. There are times he is holding her back and there are times she's going to get them both killed or worse fired.

The pacing was breakneck but more even, it also fits an on the lamb movie.

You could almost re arrange most of the scenes and beat points from 1 into 2. I know its been a long time, but movies need to be a little more of their own thing. I guess it worked this time but I hope they don't keep doing it. You can have a nod here and there but this was a bit much.

I see the movie is currently dominating the box office. My daughter wants to go see it, so I think she's trying to guilt her mother into taking her.

Damn! I was looking at the numbers this morning. Over half a billion in 5 days. Not bad for a sequel. At this rate, it might out do the original.

Damn, I see the movie is already closing in on a billion dollars. With the help of the overseas markets, I can see it doing that before even next weekend hits.

Good! maybe that will get them making a sequel faster...

It's sailed right past the OG Zootopia.
At this rate it looks to be the highest grossing movie out of Hollywood this year* and only the 2nd to go over $1B (for comparison: 2019 had 9 movies exceed the $1B mark... and don't even get me started on inflation adjustment).

* Avatar 3 should make more but it might take until next year to achieve even with all the holiday nonsense giving kids more free time. Or it'll flop as so many "block busters" have these past few years

ZooTwopia is closing on $1.3B. Thanks in no small part to China ($540M and counting!). Though it has slowed considerably and is in no danger of taking first place in the global race this year. It'll get a sequel for sure.... and another, until they start losing money for the pallid writing.
