Heard a rumor that Wario might be appearing in the film. Interesting. I don't know much about that character. I think he showed up long after I had lost interest in the games.

Ye gods! Apparently the film pulled in $34 million domestically in screenings yesterday. It's looking like it might potentially have a massive opening. Good for them, if that comes to pass.

Aren’t screenings typically for reviewers etc.?

Meaning, I didn’t think people paid to go to screenings …

I think that used to be the case, but theaters have been moving the openings up for a while now. It used to be Thursday evening. Now they’re putting some on Wednesdays as well. The upside being you get those early dollars lumped in on Friday so it looks like a bigger “opening day”. The potential (and often actual) downside is your first to second Friday drop might be even bigger.

It kind of makes sense for movies like this, where a lot of your audience is young kids, and many of them might be out for either Easter break or Spring break (or both combined).

Cool! Box Office Mojo hasn't updated yet, but it looks like (according to Wikipedia), the movie has grossed somewhere in the neighborhood of $370 million. I'm sure that will get adjusted as the actual numbers get reported, but...very not bad.

As for Wednesday early release, it's the week of Easter, and in the US at least, most kids have the week off school, so makes sense to release a very kid and family friendly movie to include more of the week. Especially since Sunday itself is likely to be less well attended due to the holiday.

Similar to movies coming out around Christmas come out that day, regardless of what day of the week it is, everyone's off so they want to have it out more of those days.
