Official Teaser Trailer dropped today.

I still have my doubts about James Gunn’s ability to write a good Superman movie. And I’m not too keen on having so many other heroes in the movie. This trailer, however, makes me cautiously optimistic.

"Hey want to see something cool" is the right approach to a trailer. Don't spoil the whole plot for us just show us enough to know you're trying to get it right.

Some very cool moments in that and more than enough to get me excited for the movie.

My reaction was mixed to the trailer, this in itself is not a good sign for the movie. For Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy movies, the trailers immediately sucked me in and made them must see movies once they came out. The same is true for pretty much every MCU movie for that matter. The being said, I'm giving Gunn the benefit of the doubt, and will watch the movie when it's out, and hope it's good, not only for its own sake, but for the entire re-set DCU under Gunn.

As for the specifics of the trailer:

1 - opening with a bloody and battered Superman crashing to the ground sets the stage for a movie where there's a real threat to him, and it's not just a cake walk because he's unbeatable like most other Superman movies tend to be. Thumbs up to that!

2 - the trailer, like the movie cast, looks way too busy and full of characters. Not only do we have Superman/Clark, as well as Lois Lane and other Daily Planet folks, and Pa Kent (who seems to be a dairy farmer this time around, rather than corn), but we also have Lex Luthor (who is pretty much contractually required to be in any Superman movie no matter what, and no matter how over used he is), Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific, some Godzilla like giant monster, some alien/android looking bad guy, Krypto the super dog, and I think at least one other super powered character. The trailer does nothing to alleviate the concern that this is simply too much for a single movie to handle well, especially when so many of the other characters have strong backgrounds and legacies in the comics.

3 - no clarity on who the main bad guy is. While this isn't a bad thing for a teaser trailer, I suspect it's actually some additional character who hasn't been shown or revealed yet, making point 2 even a bigger concern.

4 - The use of the classic John Williams superman theme music - this is mixed to me. On one hand, the fact that they're using it is a great nod to the past Christopher Reeves Superman movies, and it's fantastic music, so hopefully they're using it in the movie itself. However, the version of it they used, which is more of a rock and roll cover, is simply inferior than the orchestral original version, and also doesn't really fit the vibe. Superman is not a character you think of as a rock and roll guy, and his music should be more majestic IMO.

5 - finally, not a fan of his hair. Sure it's more aligned with the current hairstyles of tousled coifs from people like Timothy Chalamet, it doesn't fit the iconic Superman look established in my mind (or many other fans I'm guessing.)

Scarab Sages

Good points all around.

I’d like to add - one thing that bothered me was the way Superman reacted when he got hit in the head by that can. It just didn’t seem to fit the character.

I'm just glad Mr Terrific is in it.

Indeed. He was one of my favorite characters from the Geoff Johns run on Justice Society. And he looked very comics-accurate in the trailer, which I always like.

I'm thinking one of those characters we see briefly in the trailer - whose identity JoelF847 seems reluctant to guess - is Brainiac.

Liberty's Edge RPG Superstar 2008 Top 32, 2011 Top 16

I wasn't reluctant to guess, I was truly unsure. I think the one I was thinking of was actually Metamorpho, who I only have a passing familiarity with, and definitely didn't recognize in the trailer, as well as the robot, which I've read since is the Fortress of Solitude robot.

Not guessing the character initially was to reinforce my point that there's too many characters for a first movie in the DCU, and that many of them should have been in their own thing, had some background and character development, and then been in a team up. 2 villains, 1 team up superhero, and supporting cast is more than enough for a "solo" movie.

There's been lots of speculation that Brainiac is in it as well, and I've seen other recent speculation that a character I've never heard of is also in it, the Engineer or something. I also realize I didn't mention Perry White is in the movie, which is yet another character, and I'm guessing Jimmy Olsen is in as well.

The dude with the pale skin, dark eyes, and weird lines on his face? Yeah, I'm also thinking that was Metamorpho. He's one of those characters I've always enjoyed, so I look forward to seeing him brought to the big screen.

I'm not really into Superman movies at all, but that was a darn good trailer.

A bit more thought….

There’s a point right at the beginning of the interview where his voice seems to change in a very subtle way, a bit deeper and clearer. At least it seemed that way to me. I thought it was a nice touch.

I wasn’t sure who the chick with the blade hands with Luthor was, so I had to look it up. Apparently, she’s one of the characters from the Authority. I never read that stuff, as I just saw them as a kind of discount Justice League.

The basic plot seems pretty straight forward - a kind of “what gives you the right” bit of drumming up fear against Superman.

I don’t recall seeing Ma Kent in earlier stuff, so that was nice.

Of all the other heroes in the film, I think Metamorpho and Mister Terrific look most comic accurate.

I like that I couldn't tell whether he was "Clark" or "Superman" there. I dig whenever the character isn't defined by what costume he's wearing at the moment.

My wife didn't think him yelling at Lois was a good look. I like Lois going in with guns blazing even if she loves the guy she's interviewing.

My fiancee was not interested in a new Superman movie until she saw Krypto. Now she's fully on board. Hawk-Girl and Guy Gardner are a bonus.

Scarab Sages

I wasn't keen on Hawk Girl's costume, though I hope her presence means Hawk Man and Thangarians are something we can hope for one day. And though I like Nathan Fillion, and think he'll do a magnificent job, I thought he looked a little sillier than Guy should.

I liked Firefly as much as the next geek, but I wonder sometimes if a comic book movie will ever cast an actual redhead to play a red haired hero?

Either Daredevil? Nope. Arsenal/Roy Harper? Nope. Poison Ivy in that terrible Batman movie? Nope. Mera? Black Widow? Johnny Blaze? Batwoman? Medusa and Crystal? Pepper Potts? Mystique? Kid Flash? Starfox? Guy Gardner? N-n-nopers!

I think the latest Jean Grey (if not the first one) and one of the three Mary-Janes are about the only ones!

But that's just me being silly. :)

I am not a red head. I think you actually need hair for that. And what little I have left (mostly facial) is just gray and white anyway. I agree, however, we do need more red head representation.

And, no! My sister-in-law did not hold a lighter to my comic collection and force me to say this.

Liked the new trailer, except for the main plot. It's a perfectly fine plot of turning people against Superman, especially the government when it realizes they can't control him. That being said, I don't like it as a plot for the first Superman movie in a relaunch. Can't we just have Superman being adored for fighting for Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow for a movie first, and then in a 2nd or later movie have someone weaponize sentiment against him? It would feel a lot more earned of a plot line at that point.

Scarab Sages

I tend to agree. This would have made a better plot for a second movie. I'm not sure why Gunn went this route for the first movie, but there are plenty of others out there who do. That some of what they say makes a certain sense is one of the reasons I remain cautious in my optimism for the movie.

Liberty's Edge

I’ve never really been a big fan of Gunn.
This seems like a movie I will likely pass on.

I'll be the strange one and say that I am so hyped for this movie. Clark looks awesome, Lois seems awesome, the dynamic between them is great. She doesn't shrink away from confronting him as Clark or as Superman. Lots of comic book crazy action. A cool Lex. Cute dog.

This looks like the Superman movie I've been waiting for my whole adult life.

As an additional note, I don't care how the world feels about Superman. I care about how Superman feels about Superman. This looks like its getting it right.

Let's see how it is.

Scarab Sages

From what I've heard the movie is tracking really well (for what that's worth), with a projected $155-175 million opening weekend. I find myself kind of hoping it does as good or better than that.

I think it will be fine given how much people want to see Superman, a symbol of hope and justice.

'Superman' Just Beat 'Fantastic Four' for a Major Box Office Achievement

I like Superman more, so I kind of find myself hoping the new movie kicks the crap out of the competition.

Despite some of the stuff I've seen about this movie, I'm probably more inclined than not to see it in a theater. It wouldn't be opening weekend, though. I'd at least wait to see what actual fans say before shelling out money. And I'll still probably try for a matinee.

I suppose that I'm just weird as I want BOTH Superman AND Fantastic Four to be good and do well.

I just don't get the need for one to succeed and the other to fail. I'm a Marvel guy, both comics and movies. I have always been, but I also read and collected DC books. There are stories and characters from both companies that I really like.

I like Superman when he's written well and when he's challenged not just physically but emotionally and morally. I think he's Superman not because of his power set, but because he's a man with that power set that only wants to HELP and PROTECT people. Where most of us would either just be selfish or cruel for no good reason (*looks around at the US*), he's just a better person.

I'm not Gunn's biggest fan, but I do like some of his work, especially his pre-Marvel movies like SLITHER and SUPER. This trailer looks great.

Naah, I’m probably the weird one. Or at least the old, curmudgeonly one.

That said, I truly don’t give a crap if FF makes or loses money. Though I’ve grown to dislike the current day MCU, and don’t mind reveling in the failures it experiences. If that move makes money (which I doubt it will), then good for them. I’d just prefer to see Superman make even more (which I have my doubts it will). I don’t necessarily want the whole MCU to fail, just the version of it that’s taken over post Endgame. Too much multiverse, among other things.

I’m probably just as much a Marvel comics fan as I am a DC fan, having collected heavily from both over the last 40 years. I probably do have a bit more of a soft spot for DC because they have Batman (the greatest superhero).

Scarab Sages

I'm watching a show on YouTube, and they're going through one of the Superman Trailers. I didn't notice before, but there's a scene where he's holding some weird, baby looking thing. Someone on the show said it's related to Metamorpho (from a toy set).

All I care about is there's a good Superman movie and more decent Thor movie in the future.

I saw reports that some extreme "Snyderverse" fans are planning to deliberately sabotage this film in various ways. One example is to apparently reserve seats, then not actually buy them.

I thought it was a little silly. And by "a little", I mean "a lot".

Yeah, that's a good way to ensure DC takes a multi-year hiatus from movies if they're successful enough.

It seems James Gunn is now being accused of being racist against the people of India. Just over a week before the premier of the first movie in his "Gunnverse".

I watched the interview were he supposedly uttered the offensive phrase. I didn't really see it as racist. Just him making an example. I mean, personally, I do see him as just another, typically Hollywood scumbag. Doesn't make him racist. In this case, I just think it's folk making a mountain out of a molehill.

Still, not the kind of publicity you want with just over a week until the big premier.

It seems like the Snyder fans really, really hate him, and are constantly amping anything he says (or said *years ago*, in the last case where he got fired from Marvel for saying some offensive thing online a decade previous) to make him seem like a villain for committing the heinous unforgiveable effrontery of being more successful at putting butts in seats than their guy.

I can't stand his interpretations of Drax and Mantis, in particular, in the GotG movies, and he's had some ugly takes on stuff, but the movies themselves were popular, and setting aside one or two choices I didn't care for, I enjoyed them immensely, and that's where the rubber meets the road, in that industry.

I've never been a huge Superman fan, but that's actually usually a plus for me with comic book movies, as I am *far* more forgiving of changes to characters I am not 100% in love with anyway (and more able to recognize that A) some changes are necessary moving between mediums, B) some original didn't age well and needs to die in a fire, and C) there have been *dozens* of writers with wildly different interpretations of these characters over a half century or more of publication, so it's impossible for any adaptation to be 'accurate' to all, or even most, of those, often contradictory, versions!).

OTOH, the fact that these toxic fans are constantly pulling this stuff makes it easier for Gunn to get away with *actually* offensive stuff, since he's got these 'Gunn Control' prats providing cover for him, with their teapot tempests, conditioning the rest of us to just ignore the latest 'Gunn said what?' scandal.

I wonder how many genuinely bad people just run around posting crazy rumors about their latest 'offense' to get people numbed to any revelation of their *actual* offenses?

Saw one of the Amazon screenings last night and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I've been a Superman fan for 40+ years so of course I have a different set of expectations than you might. My wife, who is not generally a fan of the character enjoyed herself a lot.

The cast is great. The story is structured more like a 6 issue limited series than a traditional 3 Act Film.

No spoilers, but I definitely recommend it.

Most of the reviews I've seen have it as either pretty decent to just okay. I've only seen a few negative reviews (and maybe one or two ridiculously positive ones), and those came across as a little hinky.

I'll more than likely end up seeing it, but probably not this first weekend. Too much to do, including at least one funeral service.

Saw this today. Was very excited. I said before we left for the movie that I wasn't especially excited, which was disappointing because I have been excited to see this movie for 3 or 4 months. My wife said, yeah, that is weird. You have been bugging me about this movie for months. (She is the most casual fan possible or all things nerdy. She will go see movies or watch shows, but she doesn't dwell on any of them.)

We settled into our seats late because the line for refreshments was long. Still, because previews and commercials are so long these days, we were still in before the movie started.

I've tried to avoid spoilers to some degree, but I had seen the trailers and etc.

I will offer no spoilers, but here are my thoughts:

What do people want? If you want to hate things, there are certainly things here to hate. But what is the point of that? And what is the Superman of that? As stated explicitly and somewhat heavy handedly in the film, Superman is about hope. He thinks the best of people. I don't think the best of people, but I can understand that Superman is aspirational. I can aspire to be better than I am, and that is the point.

Lois was amazing. Astounding. My favorite live action Lois. Smart, effective, clear.

The three versions of Clark were well done. Superman, Metropolis/Daily Planet Clark, Kansas Clark. Three clearly distinct versions of the guy that should resonate with any fan of the comics since 2000.

Lex was amazing. Hoult was a revelation. He wasn't as layered and awesome as what we get by the end of the animated series and JLU, but a great start. For once in a Superman movie Lex made sense.

The other heroes and villains, if they are villains, were almost all great. Each of them was clearly characterized with the slight exception of Ultraman. Good characterization of each character and some clear threads setting up future storylines.

Some lovely small moments where various characters make speeches that tell who Superman is and why.

If you like Superman, who he is and what he stands for, I would recommend you see this.

Scarab Sages

Between Thursday and Friday the movie seems to have done well at the box office. Oddly enough, I've yet to see any definitive numbers for Saturday, or projections for Sunday. The availability of those numbers does seem like it varies from movie to movie.

Anyway, the boy has expressed interest in seeing this. Not sure about my little girl. My wife, I'm sure, would be fine with it. We'll probably go next weekend.

Although, I should note, I did hear one spoiler about Superman lore that has me rather angry at James Gunn. The kind of thing that seems like crapping on Superman fans.

Just saw this today. I went in expecting something... decent enough, but nothing that was likely to ignite me into excitement for the new DC Cinematic Universe.

I loved it. It's the best movie I've seen with Superman in it since the Donner films starring Christopher Reeve.

It is not perfection--but again, I wasn't expecting that, and my issues are more with some general balance of the narrative (there's a point where I feel like we lose track of Superman and the protagonists are actually two other characters... although it gets back on track) and some little characterization things (the balance of the relationship between Jimmy and his source of info was troubling on both sides, and while it's okay to have a troubling relationship, I feel like it required some better resolution or payoff than it got).

But overall, there was so much I enjoyed: the overall plot was interesting; it was multifaceted but not so overwrought/complex that it was hard to track what was happening.

The most important part to me they got right, and I'll use James Gunn's words: the movie emphasizes not just the "super" but the "man." There is a humanity to Clark/Kal that is really well done. He has his foibles--there were even moments where I was like, Dude, you can do better--but he is a believably decent person. He is the ultimate boy scout. And I also like how they set up the other superheroes to be a foil to him so you can see that he is the true *hero*, whereas the others are adventurers with superpowers.

I also liked that they really knew how to write a story that presents real challenges to someone who is as powerful as Superman. Sure, there's the Kryptonite moment and the "is this bad guy really stronger than Superman?" moment (which will make perfect sense, trust me)... but it's the stuff like: yes, Superman can defeat the giant monster easily, but you can see what is challenging him is he's trying to mitigate all the collateral damage at the same time as fighting it. Or yes, Superman can survive the instant death pit, but he's got to protect the baby at the same time.

The casting was 100% perfect. Superman was perfect. Lois was perfect (she is the first person to play Lois in a long time where I really believe she is Lois). Lex--oh my god, so good. Guy, Mr. Terrific, Hawkgirl, Ma, Pa, Jimmy Olson, Perry White, Cat Grant, even Eve f$~%ing Tessmacher... all beautifully well cast and played the roles just right.

Also will someone explain to me why I was crying so hard at the talk between Pa Kent and Clark? It shouldn't have been something I directly related to but I was sobbing.

They also set up the rest of the cinematic universe really well while at the same time and I'm really looking forward--for the first time in a long time--to seeing more of it.

As a lifelong DC fan (but not a diehard Superman lore fanatic), I didn't notice anything that felt like a massive deviation at least not from the spirit of the lore, if not the letter.

There was one twist--which I believe actually has been done before in at least some comic variations; a background character's motivations are potentially changed--I could see as *upsetting* some fans. But I can't fathom any part of the film as "crapping on" fans, i.e., making fools of them or being dismissive of the fandom.

And that twist I thought actually did a good job of helping serve Superman's arc and actually helped reinforce who he is and who he chooses to be.
