Party Composition for Age of Ashes

Age of Ashes

Hello everyone,

My friends and I are starting an age of ashes campaign. So far the group has a champion, swashbuckler and bard. I know that they've covered a lot of the "spread" with that combination, but what would people suggest for the 4th party member? I generally lean towards melee PCs but am open to a caster. Classes that I have considered are Sorcerer, Free Hand Fighter or an archer (fighter or precision ranger).

Bards are typically supporting casters, though the occult list does lend itself to plenty of spells to debilitate enemies too. If what I said is accurate to your bard, an offensive sorcerer would be the most well-rounded choice; possibly from the primal list, it has a lot of directly offensive spells, as well as heal, and some other spells the occult list flat-out does not have.

That said the other party members really do seem to have the bare necessities down-pat so you could easily do just about anything else. Any build you make that attacks at range would probably be a bit more useful given the champion and swashbuckler are already going to be occupying space in melee.

The group needs another striker. Starlight Span Magus fits the bill, but a melee version would work too.

Rogue (Thief) - you have a skill and perception deficiency in the party. Good at melee or ranged.

Fighter - overall best martial class. Flails and hammers are the best melee weapon type because of their crit effect. They're also good ranged with a bow.

Magus (Starlit Span) - potentially the best ranged martial class, particularly with a psychic dedication for imaginary weapon. Melee magus requires tighter execution to make work and often isn't worth the payoff.

You don't really need a 2nd full caster in this edition. In the early game, they can barely carry their weight and don't really get going until level 5/7/9 depending on who you ask (I say 7 personally).

It's mean to say, but you also shouldn't expect much from the swashbuckler. It's a weak class that takes tight execution just to end up below average. Played poorly, it'll likely end up frustrating the player and the party.

Rogue was the first thing to come to mind.

To echo Gesalt... a Swashbuckler doesn't start to pull it's weight until 5th level, IMHO.

3 people marked this as a favorite.

Our friend here is asking for advice on their character choice, not whether the swashbuckler player is going to pull their weight.

It matters because if he's limiting or weighting his options because of what he expects the swashbuckler to cover, then he might want to reconsider.
