I can only hope that it shows up on HBO Nordic. I really want this movie and it looks as though movie theaters may be closed a while longer.

I will wear a hazmat suit if I have to! I want to see this movie! (Although I'd be as willing to mask up for Black Widow or Dune, so perhaps I'm just in the late stages of cabin fever...)

Truth!

If Dune were to have come out in December I'd have seen it three times at least, assuming the actual movie was as good as the trailer.

Yeah a real test I suppose. Aside from being the slowest most painful interface, HBO Max has an error 10-20min into every program I watch.

DQ, I will get you HBO MAX(or access to an HBO MAX account) if I have to, please stay home. Its getting bad, if not worse, in your area.

All of my tvs are Roku tvs or have a Roku Premier+ plugged into them that we use for streaming. This means that to use HBOMax we have to extend the display from a phone or computer. I will admit that my household is lazy enough that this makes a difference, and I am the only one of the four of us who wants HBO Max content enough to use this feature. At this point, I'm still subscribed only because signing up for a year of the service made it cheaper than HBO.

If you have Amazon Prime, you can add HBO Max as a channel through your Amazon Prime subscription. You can then play all HBO Max content through the Amazon Video channel on your Roku.

I work for a public health institution. In fact I once personally brought a cup of coffee to Tony Fauci! But that was before the pandemic. I recognize that alone qualifies me for nothing, please rest assured I am well positioned to get the latest information on what's going on in my area from knowledgeable people and will take no unnecessary risks. Cases are on the rise in my area and I am keeping an eye on that constantly. This said, the situation here is nowhere near as bad as some other places (and the worst parts of spread in my state are far away from me, in the mountains). None of this is to say caution isn't needed, but just noting the situation relative to elsewhere. I hope you can trust to me to make an informed, adult decision.

Well, HBO Max finally came to Roku, so I might just be signing up to watch this film!

It's already been released across other realms and it's coming in well behind the 2017 movie, so I'll wait. Mulan and Dune were the two movies I was looking forward to the most this year and I won't be fooled again.

For Dune, yes... so far. A new/mutated virus might change that calculus.

Mulan, sigh. I don't know what they were thinking there. They pulled a similar stunt with Solo. And then there's Whedon and Justice League. Why? How can they spend a few hundred million dollars and end up with a #### show? How can they not know how it'll turn out? Is it a circle of sycophants at the top level?

Sorry, derailing the thread. I'll go in with low expectations for WW 1984 and see what happens. If any actor can pull something out of a mess of a superhero movie it will be Gal Gadot.

I don't think the box office performance for this movie has anything to do with the movie. Even in countries where the virus is relatively under control, movie theaters aren't somewhere people feel safe.

I'm more excited about this movie than I am about Christmas generally.

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEee

It was wonderful.

The part of my brain that earned me a Master's Degree in English Lit has nitpicks with the narrative construction in parts. The part of my brain who has adored Wonder Woman and held her as a great symbol of hope in my heart since I was three years old is telling the other part to shut up, because she was wonderful and the movie was so much fun, and all the performances were a-maz-ing. Steve's part was handled much better than I actually expected and I enjoyed his role (and Chris Pine was great). Kristin Wiig is just in-cred-i-ble as Barbara Minerva. Pedro Pascal as Max Lord... wow, just wow. (Interesting take on Max Lord the character by the way. Seems both more wicked and more humanized than some versions in the comics.) And of course Gal brings so much warmth and earnestness to the role of Wonder Woman. I wish they had actually emphasized certain moments more to strengthen her character development arc, but she was still great.

Action scenes were fantastic. I read somewhere that Patty Jenkins worked toward avoiding using CGI in action scenes when at all possible; I know it was more work for the actors and stunt doubles, but man, it looked great--something about it feeling closer came through. Of course certain scenes and moments demanded use of CGI and it is mostly used well, but I like the way things looked.

Oh and that end credit scene made my DECADE. I will be grinning about that moment alone for days. (I should send apology cookies to my neighbors for the massive squee I let out at that moment. My asthma has been acting up and somehow I still managed to belt out a squeal to shake the ceiling).

Not going to go into any further indepth analysis or critique right now. If you like the superheroes and the explody and the pretty lady saving the world, watch the movie.

Reply to CapeCodRPGer's spoiler:

The GM in this case was a god of deception who wanted to do the most chaos/damage as possible. Your resolution, while sensible--and likely to be realized in the HISHE version of the movie--would have been at cross purposes with the reason for the stone's creation--Max Lord does much more in the cause of deception and chaos in his own form. Should he have worded it better? Maybe. But regardless the result was what would have been the desired effect of the artifact's creator.

A cool article that is a conversation between Lynda Carter and Patty Jenkins talking about the character of Wonder Woman.

I liked it, but much like the first WW movie the ending was crap. I'm glad I watched it, but I am increasingly convinced that I am not the target demographic for these superhero movies.

Sovereign Court

I liked the first better. Was ok.

Sovereign Court

I thought Jenkins did a good job of not going too 80's. There is a trick where just enough is great, but too much becomes campy and overbearing. I really think the thing that makes WW84 work as an 80's flick is bringing back Pine's character to live vicariously in the wonder that was the 80's.

A lot of people are loving Wig's cheetah character, but I dont know. I love Wig, she was not the problem. I think going from nerdy unpopular kid, to popular model, to sociopath is too much of an arch for a supporting character in a movie. I mean it was super campy for Michelle Phifer's catwoman, and it was just ridiculous for Jaime Fox's electro (seriously they want to bring this character back?) that you would think writers and directors would avoid this obvious mistake by now...

Pedro Pascal was great as con-man turned villain. Especially, since the character wasnt just another genocidal maniac as these supers flicks love to lean towards. I loved that WW84 avoided that troupe for the sequel. However, I do feel like WW84 is more like a stranger things/rom-com/nostalgia throw back that the comic super action part of the movie never really materialized. Many will love the subversion in that, however, I think many others will be put off with it making this a so-so remembered sequel.

Patty Jenkins mentioned that she was very much going for a nod to both the 80s Superman and the 70s Wonder Woman TV show with some of the feel, look, and themes of the movie. It is a sharp contrast from the much darker WWI tone of the first, and is frankly much more fanservice. As exactly the kind of fan being serviced, I enjoyed it, but I can dig others feeling some whiplash from the shift. Even then, I appreciated they picked an approach and went with it, rather than try and please everyone, which other franchise films have suffered from attempting to do.

As for Barbara's arc, I thought they fleshed it out pretty well and she is as much of a supporting character as Steve--not the lead, but critical. *shrug* As for the arc, "nerdy friend of Diana's suddenly becomes sociopath" is every version of Barbara Minerva that's ever existed (and in fact I think their take is one of the better versions) so I feel like if they didn't go that route they shouldn't have bothered with Cheetah at all. And maybe some might feel that would have been the better route, but I felt the movie was better for her being in it.

Reply to Fumarole:

My take was that as Max grew in power he was able to overcome the one wish restriction, and/or technically you could get one wish with the stone and then you get another with Max-as-stone.

Yes, this really came through at times, though, it was rather inconsistent with other elements of the movie. I did enjoy it though because the Superman movies and Wonder Woman Tv show really reminded me of the 80's. It was certainly a feel good element that I liked.

Im not well versed in WW history so perhaps im missing some context. However, I think these things are tough to swallow in a single film. It feels too sudden a transition. I mean, I guess this oversized sweater can be a dress and now everyone thinks Barb is Kathy Ireland. It reminded me of shes all that (ugh which is coming back...) drop the glasses and overalls and suddenly we have got a perfect 10 on our hands. Of course, this can speak to the powers of the dream stone and why its such a McGuffin, and a dangerous one at that.

Though the jump to "apex predator" just didnt make a whole lot of sense. I mean its there in the film, but if you blink you miss it. I guess this is one of those things i've come to expect from most of my consumption being series now instead of films. Its something that never translates well in a single film except with the main character.

Could be a sign this film had too much going on too. Which I think it does. There is nothing downright terrible about this movie, but nothing is incredible either.

Warner Brothers fast tracks development for Wonder Woman 3.

The press release also notes that WW84 earned the top box office during the pandemic (no, $16.7 million isn't a lot, but it's the most any movie has made on opening weekend since the lockdowns began).

The parallel release on HBO MAX did not help the Box Office. (They might have been better off to do a "Pay Per View.")

The parallel release is just fine by me (cant wait for Dune!). Though, im glad WB is adjusting for the pandemic and not letting low box office takes kill a good franchise and much needed Woman super.

Many people who streamed did so because they could not have seen it at the theater--it's hard to say a significantly higher amount would have been earned otherwise. Plus as Warner owns HBOMax they still earn money from all the subscriptions.

Based on reviews and viewer ratings I'd say that a standard box office release would've grossed about $70M, maybe a little more or maybe a little less. Given that marketing for a theater release is $10'sM, they can pad their net from those savings.

While I'm glad some people liked the movie, I thought it was one of the worst superhero movies I've seen (and I've seen most of them). Thought the plot was all over the place, and most character constantly knew things they had no way to know, or didn't know things which were super obvious, scene transitions were really poor, and the action scenes weren't too good (both in terms of exciting action and the special effects - often when WW was on screen zipping around on her lasso, the transition between her and the background was really bad). I'm not going to make a full list of things I didn't like, since a) no reason to rain on the parade for those who liked it, and b) I don't have enough time to be thorough and it's a long list.

I will say that I guess it's good it was on HBO Max, as I chose to watch it all. If it was in a theater I'd have walked out midway through.

I signed up for HBO Max and watched WW84 last night.

I thought it was kind of OK.

It was not the worst superhero movie I've seen, but not even in my top 20. And while I think it's still one of the better DC superhero movies, I've not been a big fan of them in general, so that isn't high praise.

I really, really wanted to like it: The original Wonder Woman film is among my favorite superhero movies, and I tend to like Patty Jenkins' direction. Part of why I didn't like it as much as I'd hoped is that I was so looking forward to this movie and had very high expectations. (And as someone who came of age in the 1980s, I was pretty pumped for the setting.)

I think Gadot's, Wiig's, and Pascal's performances were all good, particularly Pascal's. Gadot just perfectly embodies the character of Wonder Woman. I really liked the first hour of the film, when it was all character-focused.

I was much less impressed with the final 90 minutes: It turned into a same-old same-old superhero blockbuster plot that's all CGI action and little else. I found that part pretty tedious. And I was absolutely not impressed with the special effects: I thought they were high-budget TV-level, not blockbuster movie level. And clocking at more than 2.5 hours, I thought the film was about 45 minutes too long.

At the start of the big fight between Wonder Woman and Cheetah where both characters reveal their costume changes, I audibly muttered, "they look so dumb."

So... in my opinion, Wonder Woman 1984 was better than Suicide Squad. Better than Justice League. Better than Batman v. Superman. Better than Green Lantern. Better than Man of Steel. Better than Watchmen. A better film but not nearly as fun as Aquaman. [I still haven't seen Shazam!.] Not as good as the Nolan Batman trilogy, or Birds of Prey, and a far cry from Wonder Woman.

Still wouldn't be an issue.

"Oh, hey, what's that?"
"That? Oh, it's a spaceship from a science fiction show that was really influential a couple of decades ago. No one's built it for real."
"Huh? Shame, I could see myself in charge ov something like that."

Legal deniability established, and we would all know what they're alluding to.

Shazam! was fun. I'm looking forward to the "Snyder Cut" and Dune (finally!) in 2021. I just have to live another 9 months or so in good health....

I'll be the first to admit that I have purposefully not seen movies which look horrible from the trailer, such as Fan4tstic, Batman v Superman, Justice League, Man of Steel, Suicide Squad, etc. I did see Elektra, but didn't think it was horrible. WW84 certainly had higher production values than it did, but didn't think it was better.

I saw the movie on the big screen at a private screening (six of us in the theater well spread out and masked) and I have a better reply to Fumarole about his question.

Spoiler:

Quote:
Why did Barbara get a second wish? Her first was to be like Diana. Great. But then on the helicopter she got a second wish and became Cheetah. Plot hole, or did I miss something?

Max and Barbara discuss this before she makes her second wish pretty explicitly (she says "Hey I thought you could only get one wish."). Max's reply is admittedly muddy (I blame a lot of the quirks/problems with the dialogue on Geoff Johns because I can) but it's basically that as he has grown in power, he realizes he can keep giving as long as he can also keep taking. Barbara doesn't actually get her new wish until later when he is in the broadcast room and he starts pointing at different people, "I want your health, I want your strength, I want your ferocity..." etc. I'm not sure what it was of the things he listed that he took from her, but once he starts saying this you see her arch backwards indicating the change is beginning.

An additional or alternative explanation is that technically Barbara renounces her first wish (her first wish was that she wanted to be like Diana, and right before she states her second desire, she explicitly says, "I don't want to be 'like' anyone anymore" which is basically a renunciation of that wish).

I thought it looked fine on the small screen but it looked even better, to a large extent, on the big. (Mind you there are lots of movies where I am like, "Hey the visual effects look great!" and other people are like, "This looks awful!" I don't know if my standards are too low or others' are too high or both. But take this with a grain of salt.)

Not gonna deny there are things to pick at about the movie, but ultimately I still find it some good four color fanservicey fun for the most part. Personally I think the "climactic battle"/scene where the hero saves everything is my favorite resolution I've ever seen in a superhero movie that I can think of. Makes me break down sobbing (in a good way) every time. I acknowledge that depending on what you're looking for in a superhero, your mileage may vary widely.
