Melee / Ranged spell attack rolls

Rules Discussion

What's the difference between these two? Aren't you still using your spell attack roll modifier? I know one is melee and the other is from a distance, is there something else?

You use your spell attack modifier for both, yes. There isn't much difference now, but if there ever comes a way to cast in melee without the somatic part of spells provoking then ranged casts will provoke where shocking grasp and such will not.

You could also have environmental effects like high winds affecting only the ranged attack rolls, or the target may have reactions that can only be taken against one type of attack roll, ranger or melee.

Awesome thanks a lot. I was wondering because I was considering getting Spiritual Weapon for my Bard. However the requirement says must have a deity? Can I use this spell? Can I casually worship Desna for example and cast this spell?

Flanking will benefit a melee spell attack roll and not a ranged attack roll. Making Melee spell attack roles the best options for spell casting rogues.

And would Spiritual Weapon be granted the flanking bonus, it does say it cannot provide flanking but seems like it can take advantage of it and gain the bonus?
