GM plans on an undead heavy game. I want to use a plant based build, but don’t know where to start.

Advice

I seem to recall there being ways of making plant minions, like maybe it was a feat or something. There are also ways of getting a plant companion, and having an awakened tree. I believe one of the ways for a plant companion was through a feat, which opens that option up for characters that don’t take the archetype. There are plant type races I could pick as well.

I tried to look for a guide on this, since there seems to be enough on this subject to get a build going, but it doesn’t seem like others have tried this.

And yes, I was inspired by a series of popular tower defense games.

Anyways, any help would be appreciated.

It will be easier to help if we can narrow your focus a bit (as you've pointed out there's a lot of material that can be used).

What would you like your plant minions to be able to do?
How do you envision fighting with them? (having 1 big plant, having a bunch of little plants, summoning plants, etc.)
Do you want to be a plant yourself?
What do you want your main character to be doing during combat? (eg. front line combat, mounted combat, caster, something else?)

the feat curious companion will allow you to take a plant as a choice for an animal companion. There are crafting rules for making leshys. They even added leshies and Gathlains as a playable plant based races. There are archetypes like treesinger that allow you to take a plant companion without needing the feat. There's even several summoner archetypes that might work.

IMO there's enough out there that you could probably make any kind of character you want and give them a "plants as pets" theme.

I’d definitely be a caster. I’d want to be a Vine Leshy, so I have a 100% chance of attracting a spirit when making Leshies.

I want to overrun my opponent with plants, though I would want one big one, so maybe being a Fungal Pilgrim Druid, or a Treesinger Druid.

I’d also use Grow Plant Creature, and awaken on trees.

I’m worried that all of this will eat up too much gp though. I can always get by with my companion and awakened tree, but I’m still worried about the cost.

If I can make summoning plants worthwile, I might consider that in place of growing them, but I’d still like to grow at least some of them.

I’m also worried that this won’t be at least average in power levels. I can handle not being op, but if I’m particularly weak, I might hold the group back.

A Phytokineticist would be flavorful. Not only would you have a positive energy blast to damage undead but all of your stuff is nature themed.

I'd recommend getting wood blast at 1st level and positive energy blast at 7th.

A vine leshy has perfect stats for a kineticist: bonus to Con/Wis and penalty to Int (a stat you don't care about as a kineticist), with a size bonus to hit (to make up for the lack of a racial dex bonus)

You won't be OP, but you won't be weak; kineticists have a high floor but low ceiling, meaning it's relatively easy to make a well-built kineticist but relatively harder to make an OP kineticist.

You eventually can gain an at-will plant growth and animate object on plants, which is pretty cool too.

*edit* the Leshy Kineticist archetype would be great; the biggest disadvantage that kineticist has is you lose out on internal buffer for a more situational buffer. But you gain a few free wild talents.
