In honor of this, we wanted to answer the question "why ghouls?" for a behind-the-scenes peak at some of the thought processes that went into creating the story. Long-time Kobold Press designer Richard Green worked with Chief Kobold Wolfgang Baur to create the story for Empire of the Ghouls ... find out what Richard had to say about the creation process !

Is the adventure the same as the old Dungeon Magazine one, or the 3.x Empire of the Ghouls? I mean, it's obviously expanded, but is the adventure the same, just padded?
Per the Kickstarter FAQ:
Is this an update of the D&D 3.5 Empire of the Ghouls? Or the 1996 "Kingdom of the Ghouls" from Dungeon magazine?It is more the first than the second. The magazine "Kingdom" piece shares an author and themes with the Empire from 3.5, but the two are otherwise entirely separate adventures.
This version roughly doubles the page count of the 3.5 version, and uses a similar underdark map. However, it assumes that the ghouls failed in their plots of the 3.5 version, and presents an entirely new storyline, new monsters, new magic, and new twists. At the time of the 3.5 version, Kobold Press was a very new company, and so that work is also only modestly illustrated in B&W.
Basically, this uses the same locations and the same ghoul culture, but tells and entirely different story on a much larger scale and with much better design, editing, playtest, and graphics.
Familiarity of the prior version of "Empire" is not required in any way to run this campaign.

Week 2 Recap and Art Preview
It's the end of the second week of the Empire of the Ghouls Kickstarter, and 6 more stretch goals have been unlocked:
Drow Race Expanded - We expand on the drow as a player race in the Underworld Player's Guide.
Underdark NPCs - Three new NPCs appear out of the Underworld!
Wanderers in Darkness - Speaking of randomly appearing out of the darkness, this stretch goal expands our random encounter tables to include a wide range of creatures from all kinds of terrain types in the Underworld.
Vampire Map and Encounter - A new vampire-themed encounter is added to Underworld Lairs.
Cult of the Red Goddess - A detailed entry about the Red Goddess Marena and her cult is added to the Empire of the Ghouls.
More Art! - We can commission more great art for our NPCs, monsters, magic items, and more (check the link below to see the Phantom, warship of the Ghoul Emperor, Nicoforus the Pale, sporting a bone hull and flying sails of flayed skin !)
