Dispel Magic DC

Skills, Feats, Equipment & Spells

For dispel magic, if your counteract level is lower than the counteract level of the magic item or spell your trying to dispel how do you figure out the magic item's or spell's DC?

I imagine, as with most of PF2, the answer is 'Table 10-2'

I think the spell's DC is the same as the spell caster's DC. For a magic item I agree that Table 10-2 is your best bet, maybe use the same value as the crafting check.

Page 319 of Rulebook

Use Table 9-3 to see the level of the effect or item

Example, you wanna dispell an item lvl 8

1) Check the table, see that a effect or ability leve 8 is equal a counteract level 4 (Tip: its lvl/2 rounded up)

2a) So now tou cast dispel magic. If you cast as a slot 5 or higher you automatically succeed. As said in page 318
"If your ability has a higher counteract level than that of the effect to be counteracted, you automatically succeed."

2b) If its the same leve or a lower level you must do a counteract check the rules for this go as: (for my interpretation, you use your spell roll if you are casting dispel magic)
"If your ability’s counteract level is the same as the effect’s counteract level or lower, you must succeed at a check using the relevant skill or ability against the DC of the target effect. You take a cumulative –5 penalty to this check for every level by which your ability’s counteract level is lower than the target’s. If your ability is 4 or more counteract levels lower than that of the effect you are trying to counteract, your attempt automatically fails."

What we don't have here is how to calculate the DC.

I would go if what Xenocrat said, using spell DC for spells and High DC for items

3 people marked this as a favorite.

My PF Group just finished Chapter 3 of the Doomsday Dawn Playtest, and Dispel Magic became something one of the group wanted to try (no spoilers other than this). We actually stopped play for 10 minutes trying to read the text of Dispel Magic, which went something like this.

Look up Dispel Magic. Refers us to page 197.

Counteracting spells refers us to Page 319, with really NO additional information.

Page 319 Gives us the table, with NO info on how to use it for Dispel Magic.

SIX grown men with probably 180 years of RPG experience between us spend ten minutes flipping between three page references, trying to decipher what the **** we're supposed to do.

We look up references on these forums for people who HAVE figured it out, and spend another two minutes trying to figure out how they came to the simplified answers they gave.

The player decides to just let the effect stand and decides to attack again instead.

Dispel and counteracting is a really rough edge that I hope gets simplification. PF1's Dispel was easier than this to figure out. After having it explained, I see what they're trying to do, and I kind of wish the designers had just duplicated whole-cloth the mechanics of Dispel Magic from D&D 5th edition ("spellcasting ability" is similar to "spell roll" - it's just your ability mod instead of proficiency mod + ability mod), because it works much simpler to accomplish basically the same thing - or worst case, roll it back to something similar to the mechanics for PF1.
