Lone Wolf Rpg [ Cubicle 7 ]

Other RPGs

A couple of years ago there was a kickstarter for a new Lone Wolf roleplaying game by Cubicle 7.

An adaptation of Joe Dever's Game Books from way back in the 80s in pure rpg form but in a way reminiscent of the original game-book rules (non d20).
Only its the second time this has been done.
Around 2010 Mongoose published an excellent series of rulebooks called 'Lone Wolf Multiplayer Game Book'.

My question is (to anyone who has bought the new rules or box):

What does this new system have to offer in comparison to the simple d10 mechanic from the Mongoose era? And if its an advanced version of MGLWMGB, is it compatible with previous material? Specifically adventures and campaigns?

Many Thanks for any input

Following this thread.

Would not be here if not for lone wolf

So not even one person here has tried both systems for comparison?

I have not tried both systems, but I own both. The newer system is basically the system right from the game books - you pick 5 Kai Disciplines, you have Combat Skill and Endurance Points, and you use a Combat Results Table to fight foes. There are some rules for multiple PC vs. one foe combat, and there are advanced rules with a skill system independent of Disciplines.

Thank you.

Hmm, the older one was more or less a d10 version of the book system, only they didn't use a Table for Combat.

Isn't the Combat Results Table idea a bit counter-intuitive for a tabletop rpg?

Apparently its:

"a new version of the Lone Wolf Multiplayer Gamebook (Mongoose) that has been extensively reviewed, revised, and expanded upon with new material from Joe Dever, the Scriptarium team, and the Cubicle 7 team"

I have ordered the box-set from Cubicle 7 and will let you know how they both compare when I receive it ^_^

.

No, I remembered this incorrectly. It did use a combat results table.

Battle was carried out exactly like in the Game-books with the exception of allies taking place alongside you (although, even that I think was derived from a specific event in one of the books)

:)

I have started running a campaign with my gf and another player and love it so far.

The basic rules are the previous version, but with higher production values and a few other additions like tokens, maps and nice peripherals in general* which I think will attract more people.

Its written in a didactic sort of way, friendly, helpful and not at all intimidating. Perfect for introducing people to role-playing games without scaring them away.

I also like the focus on narrative and description it puts(via the simplicity of design and rule-set).

From this Sunday and onward we will try the advanced rules that make it even more like a proper rpg. More complex, character traits and options, choice of moves and stunts in battle etc

I will post opinions once I ve gone through that too :)

*=(Most of the art-pieces are amazing. Though sometimes I do miss the pencil work from the Mongoose edition as the colourers in the C7 version are amazing, but not all the pencilers too. They had a bigger budget to spare than Mongoose and its so well done, that its a minor inconvenience.)
