Confusion about training owlbear cubs

Advice

I'm new to GMing and have a question about using the handle animal skill.

The party found three owlbear cubs and want to train them to become guardians. I know from the bestiary that the DC is 23 either way, but am confused as to whether they need to rear the cubs and then train them, or do it at the same time (if so is that two different difficulty checks?), or does training for a general purpose supersede rearing anyway?

If they do need to be reared first, there is no time duration specified, so does the rearing stage last until the owlbears reach maturity?

Also, what happens if you fail to rear an animal?

Sorry, I just find Handle Animal confusing for some reason.

Grand Lodge

While it is considered impossible to truly domesticate owlbears due to their feral natures, they can still be used as guardians if contained within an area but allowed to roam and hunt freely there.

Also, what happens if you fail to rear an (magical beast) animal?

It eats you.

Best of luck with your little owlbearlettes.
