Hellknights

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

We are playing a Hell's Vengeance game and the Magus Mindblade is thinking of taking the Signifier prestige class... but bemoans the loss of strength for his mindblade (as he loses Magus levels for his PrC levels).

There's nothing about the Signifier PrC that really attracts him except it feels appropriate to the character. Is there any reason I shouldn't let him call himself a Hellknight (after going through the initiation) without taking the PrC?

Would you say he has to take at least one level of the PrC, then he can just walk away? Is there any other way for him to get bonuses to his Mindblade to make up for the loss of levels?

Any help appreciated...

Unfortunately Hellknight Signifer doesn't work very well with newer material . . . But maybe this will change when Path of the Hellknight comes out (can't remember the exact date, but it's soon).

I'd say that if he passes the initiation for being a Hellknight Signifier then he's a Hellknight, PrC or not.

Liberty's Edge

Exactly, also I always love houserules!

Grand Lodge

The Pathfinder Society Field Guide includes prestige awards that grant membership in the Hellknights without prestige class levels. It would not be out of line to allow it in your home game.

One doesn't need hellknight prestige levels to be a hellknight. You still have to do the whole initiation rite with the solo fighting a devil of superior hd though. Several hellknights don't have prestige levels. The original architect of one of the orders was a pure wizard. But there's no requirement to take the prestige.

Long as you obey their rules and work to their goals, the Hellknights don't really care what your class features are.

Thanks guys !

Ran a home brew evil campaign. One of the players loved the Hell Knight theme but disliked what the class offered. I agreed with him and simply allowed him to be a member without taking the Prestige Class.
Both Hellknight Prestige classes don't impress me. I as a GM would allow a player to become one, it is an organization so as an organization any PC should be able to join provided they qualify for being in it. Lawful alignment for Hellknights for example.

Just remember to allow your PC to call upon Hellknight resources and allies once in a while, and maybe throw in some quest hooks where the Hellknights require their newest armiger to go put down a rebellion in Nowheresville before it gets too big.
