I too like the realistic villains we have gotten so far. They are scarier than anything I have seen in a comic so far.
Killgrave and the Kingpin in particular. Kingpin being somewhat sympathetic and Killgrave being an almost complete sociopath. Didnt really care for Diamondback's motivation and really kinda liked both Cottonmouth and Shades. Black Mariah was a nice evolution though and I'd venture to say that the women in the show are waaaaay more fleshed out than the men. I found my self understanding and associating more with Misty Knight than Luke Cage. I love the slow build of Black Mariah and Shades almost parasitic relationship.

I was thinking the same. After the focus shifted from Cottonmouth, it did sometimes feel like Mariah and Misty were the main characters, and Luke himself was kind of a vector to tell their story.

I agree with this quite a bit. I particularly loved Shades, and am still wondering if he got anything lasting out of the experimentation.

At for least for the first part of the season.
** spoiler omitted **
The scariest thing about Killgrave was that his power made his special brand of scociopathy especially horrible. People were literally THINGS to him . They were acquired and discarded as such. And the fact that he took almost no responsibility for any of his actions? WOW. Utterly horrifying.

I hope not. I have no interest in this kid of rehashed plotline that keeps coming back again and again and again... (x-men us vs. them at first (60's), then civil war (comics); then MCU's 'supers' with Agents of SHIELD, then Cap America Civil War (with Downey Jr. coming up with really weak excuses for the registration, totally NOT in-character compared to his previous f~@# you government stance), etc.)

Plus I liked the fact Shades was cool enough to deal with all of that PLUS Diamondback's level of crazy. He STILL managed to come out alive and mostly on top.
I laughed out loud when he said to Diamondback, "What chu talkin' about, Willis?" and Diamondback was like, "Are you joking?" as if the concept of someone snarking to *him* (when he'd clearly demonstrated that he would straight up murder someone just to punctuate a sentence) was utterly mind-blowing.

I loved the fact that he was more pissed that he used his real name.

Misty used, lied to, and dumped him.It was implied that these were the only three women he had been with for many years (at least since he went to prison), despite other opportunities. Based on the available data he only ever broke off one relationship... with the woman who killed his wife. Virtually the opposite of the 'love them and leave them' impression you somehow got.
Now... if you wanted to complain that Marvel presented all three women as manipulative liars who were using Cage you'd have a legitimate gripe.
He works with 4 women since prison and sleeps with all 4. Ok technically the feds interrupt his hook up with night nurse so they never get to "go for coffee" but clearly it was going to happen and might still depending on the next series. Maybe my problem is less with Luke Cage and more with Marvel making it's girls into sluts.
Wouldn't that make Luke the slut?

*agrees with Jessica* There's no need to use that word when clearly it's not appropriate.
Also I did laugh out loud at the whole exchange between Diamondback and Shades about "Willis".
But again I side with Jessica and the rest. There's nothing in my mind to suggest the women Luke Cage or ANY of the Marvel characters that are sexually active need to be shamed for anything.

All I want is them to feature a variety of types of female sexual viewpoints in the main characters. They certainly don't have to all be Christian.
I don't think every physical relationship between consenting adults has to be within the framework an monogamous relationship, but I would like to see a greater range of relationship types represented on the Netflix shows. I'm fine with characters having no-commitment pleasurable hook-ups with more than one partner, but I'd also like to see healthy pleasurable "depictions" within long-term monogamous relationships consisting of two equal partners. They don't have to be perfect, but too often shows provide easy narrative hooks by making one of the partner's "the foolish/dumb one", or a cheater, or overly ambitious/backstab-y, or a "joke" character, whatever... but I think there are great character arcs that can be explored by having a loving & respectful couple facing their problems together. Of course, if it were up to me, I'd make them a gay or lesbian couple. I'd also make one of them some denomination of Christian and the other Jewish or Muslim.

I don't think I've ever seen a blaxplotation show or movie (I've never even seen Shaft), but I could tell from musical & dialogue cues that there was another level going on in Luke Cage that mostly flew over my head.
My first impressions:
I did enjoy the excellent and wide range of song styles and choices within the show.
I know this is going to sound totally "Well, Durr!", and it's something I already knew on a rational textbook level, but I was totally unprepared for all different shades of brown onscreen. I knew it was coming from all the pre-release coverage with creators, but that still didn't prepare me from actually experiencing it. I think it's great, and clearly long-overdue, but I was also struck by just how different the almost all-white narrative I grew up watching is so completely at odds with reality. (I'm also getting this vibe from the brilliant new show Atlanta on FX.)
I enjoyed Luke Cage as much as I did season 2 of Daredevil, but not as much as I did Jessica Jones, because I immediately connected with Jessica and Trish Walker. I think I'll enjoy Cage better on rewatch. Simone Messick is fantastic though, to the point I think that more than once Misty Knight overshadows Cage in his own show. I really was hoping she'd...

I noticed that the old Hollywood trope kind of continues, in that the male actors can be dark black, like Mike Colter, but that the ladies were lighter, because of some weird notion that men (both black and white) find lighter-skinned black ladies more attractive. More Halle Berry or Zoe Saldana, less like Lupita Nyong'o or Alfre Woodard.
Scenes of Misty next to Luke, or Misty with her police boss, kind of reminded me how much casting people seem to veer towards casting the lightest-skinned possible women to play black roles.
(Alfre Woodard being the obvious exception.)
I think I'll enjoy Cage better on rewatch. Simone Messick is fantastic though, to the point I think that more than once Misty Knight overshadows Cage in his own show.
True that. Just as Trish was a more likable character at times than Jessica, on what was ostensibly Jessica's own show, Misty starting out as a heroic figure, while Cage was attempting to be 'not a hero' helped a lot. (Thankfully, neither of them had to be Uncle Ben'd to teach the hero to stand up! That was Pop's role in this one.) When she started to freak out (at Claire, in the interrogation) it was actually tense for me, since I liked both of those characters and it kind of hurt to see Misty kind of losing her way.
I'm glad they patched things together, and hope we see more of them, either in Iron Fist's run, a season 2 of Luke Cage, the Defenders series and / or a potential Daughters of the Dragon show with Misty and Colleen (and maybe Claire, or even Trish, or Elektra?).

Yeah, the But Not Too Black trope. There seems to be some scientific basis for this (improved Vitamin D production for fetal skeletal development), but I have my doubts the differences would be nearly as pronounced as depicted on TV.

Just came back from the IRON FIST panel at New York Comic Con (I was fourth row center, because PURE LUCK).
Not only did they show a bunch of pretty lengthy clips (including one of Coleen Wing beating the ever loving crap out of some guys in a cage fight...) and do mini interviews with the cast but they also bought out Jon Berenthal and Debroah Ann Wohl and announced that they've started filming the Punisher last week.
Then after THAT another surprise, they bought out Charlie Cox, Kyrsten Ritter, Mike COulter and Finn Jones. All of the DEFENDERS together for the first time.
Then they announced who's playing their main antagonist (but NOT who the antagonist actually IS):
SIGOURNEY WEAVER.
That audience lost it's collective minds when she walked out and commenced with a chant of "HO-LY S**T!!" much to the amusement of the cast gathered on stage.
It was a good fun panel and a perfect way to end my third day at NYCC.

Shin,
They confirmed that Sigourney was the villain/antagonist? Cause I just heard they said "She's in the tv show." Not like as a specific role.
Jeph Loeb started with "It is my enormous pleasure to be able to tell New York Comic Con, and obviously the rest of the world, that we've not told you who the villain of the Defenders is. "
"And the reason is for that is because we needed to find somebody who can take on all these guys *waves toward the Defenders* that you would really be happy with."
"SHE has been, Golden Globe, Emmy Nominated, Oscar nominated, she doesnt require any introduction anywhere she goes in the world. She'll be joining the Defenders cast, ladies and gentlemen it is my disctinct pleasure to introduce Ms. Sigourney Weaver."
That was pretty much his entire introduction transcribed from the video that I shot from my phone.

Ooh, this sounds promising! Misty Knight, in the comics, has continued to be a bit of a badass, but Colleen Wing has been mostly forgotten, it seems. (Much like Hellcat / Patsy Walker, come to think of it.) Hopefully, she'll not only kick butt on screen, but the comic versoin will get a nice rise out of this, as well.

Wow! I can't even think of who she'd be playing!

I've got one episode left, and I've liked the show, but not as much as JJ or DD.
The fight scenes have been dull for me compared to fast moving martial arts stuff in DD.
I haven't found the villains as compelling as Kilgrave or Kingpin. Diamondback and his daddy issues I thought were lame and cliche. I would have preferred him if he had no connection to Cage at all. The brother thing just felt forced and cheesy. I would have liked to have seen Cage fight a villain with genuine super powers.
The acting has been alright. I like the actor playing Cage, and Cottonmouth, and I enjoy Misty Night. I liked the nurse when she was in Daredevil, but she feels kind of forced in LC. She basically just started following him around and telling him to go be a hero for no real reason, other than suddenly deciding that she wanted to specialize in "nursing super heroes" which seemed weird.
Luke's strength is a little weak for my tastes. Sure he isn't supposed to be the Hulk, but in the comics he could pick cars and things of that weight class up.
I also was hoping for maybe an Iron Fist or Daredevil cameo.
Anyhow, it's still decent, but not great.

HEY! I have an idear! Maybe it's Superia aka Doctor Deirde Wentworth!
I mean she's pretty bad ass...
Superia's kind of two-dimensional 'man-hating radical feminist,' and the Netflix villains have been much more nuanced.
Looking over classic villains;
all the mutants / X-foes are out, so no Mystique or Selene or whomever
anyone we've already seen (Jeri Hogarth, Madame Gao, Lorelei, Elektra) or will see (Hela) is out, since none of them are Sigourney Weaver
various ladies of the Serpent Society, Acolytes, Grapplers, etc. are out for various reasons
aliens like Deathbird or Skrull-Queen Veranke seem off-theme
Moonstone - an evil psychologist, manipulating powered patients, both using them as fire-and-forget weapons, and perhaps finding a way to steal power from them? It wouldn't be 100% Karla Sofen as she exists in the Marvel Comics, but seems a suitable adaptation for the screen. If she powers up, and isn't killed at the end of the series, she's also setup to join a theoretical Thunderbolts series or movie later...
Margali Szardos or Caroline LeFey - a magical cult leader sort, using mysticism to empower cultists and / or summon demons / undead / monsters?
Kwannon (pre-body swap with Psylocke) - has ties to the Hand, and was hinted to have psychic abilities even before getting her chocolate all up in Betsy's peanut butter. *Might* be unavailable, due to Fox licensing issues. Might not. In either case, Sigourney Weaver isn't terribly Japanese, so a Hand connection is probably out...
Crimson Cowl/Justine Hammer - we've seen Hammertech in the Cage series, and while Sigourney likely wouldn't play Justin Hammer's daughter, she could certainly play his mother, or aunt, or something.
Viper/Madame Hydra - I don't think they'll tap the Hydra well, but who knows.
I like the idea of someone already connected to the elements already introduced in the series, so someone like Justine Hammer/the Crimson Cowl works for me, occupying a sort of female Hood role, as a crime boss who follows the comic-book Justin Hammer's role of tech-supplier to the underworld (or, in this case, as arms merchant to *both sides* of the 'War on Crime,' happily taking money with both hands, and profiting by the bloody and devastating arms race on the streets that she's fueling).
There's also the possibility that Sigourney's playing a gender-swapped version of a male character, which opens up a lot of other possibilities.
Luke's strength is a little weak for my tastes. Sure he isn't supposed to be the Hulk, but in the comics he could pick cars and things of that weight class up.
Originally, he could lift 3 tons, about a third what Spider-Man can lift, or half of what Tigra could lift, making him a neat partner for Iron Fist, because Iron Fist was the hard hitter, while Luke was the one who was unbreakable. Between the two of them, they equaled a Hulk or Colossus-type 'tank,' splitting up the super-punching and bulletproof skin between them.
More recently, he's been ramped up in the comics and I have no idea what his strength level is now. Better than Spider-Man, I'm pretty sure, perhaps half of what Thor, the Thing, Colossus or the Hulk would typically lift (although, this being comic books, all of their strengths vary wildly between appearances...).

MMCJawa |

If they are going with Sigourney Weaver, they could be going with the secret corporation that made Nuke and was involved with Jessica Jones (and maybe Luke Cage or even DareDevil?) getting there powers.
I am guessing she is going to be more a Black Mariah style villain, someone who barks orders but isn't physically fighting them.
