I apologize if this has already been discussed but I cannot find it.

Can you re-flavor an item as far as looks is concerned as long as it acts the same as the original item and everybody at the table is aware of that item?

For example, Cab you have a Goz Mask that looks like a crab face (as opposed to a fish face) as long as everybody knows it's a crab mask and it acts exactly like as a Goz Mask?

Can you have a carpet of flying that looks like a carpet made of dark shadows as long as it acts exactly like a carpet of flying and everybody knows that is what it is?

For PFS I think there is no re-flavoring allowed. But what you do in group doesn't have to leave the group ;)

You should expect some major table variation on this. As far as I am concerned, if you're playing at one of my tables it is okay as long as you aren't trying to get a mechanical benefit from it, and as long as you let the table know beforehand. Though as I said you should expect many who won't allow it.

In addition to the 'no mechanical benefit' rule, as a PFS GM I'd also add that in the admittedly unlikely circumstance that it matters to the scenario, the change would have no effect on whether NPCs would recognize the item and act accordingly.
