Hey everyone,

If you're planning to submit and you haven't yet, you owe it to yourself to just go ahead and submit. If everyone waits to the last minute, that could cause load on the server which lags you out or any other number of possible things that could happen. Don't let that be you! Submit your item as soon as possible!

I sent mine in last night Mark. I've had the RPG Superstar Curse for four years running. Always something goes wrong. This time I think I have a winner. You sound like a fair and steady judge. I'm glad you're on board.

Perhaps I missed something. How do we submit the item?

If there's one thing you learn every year, it's that item pricing is more of an art than a science. I have no idea how they costed some of the things I'm comparing to, so I'll just have to go with my gut, and think 'How much would I pay for it?'.

Snorter, you're totally right about item pricing. The rules are not clear for anything but potions, scrolls and wands. The others have a rough mechanic, an incomplete reference table and rest is Voodoo.

I think the equation is a bit more like "How much would I pay for it?" and then multiply that by 2.5 to 3.

Or, 'How soon do I want my players to get hold of this?'.

I'm used to despise wealth-by-level tables, but trying to price magic items may have changed my tune.

My method is usually to go, step by step, painstakingly through the item creation rules as closely as possible, then go, "That's way too much/too little!" (usually too much) and then make something up only very roughly based on the calculation I did.

I found pricing a lot harder this year, because yeah, the guidelines are not as solid for non-wondrous items and consumables. There are some hard lines, like a +1 weapon or armor or deflection bonus on a ring costs X but then how you add on any additional abilities is seems as much gutwork as it is calculation.

That's basically how I do it. "At what levels/CR is this item functionally impossible to counter?" Price it above that WBL. "At what levels does this item complete a build?" Price it around that WBL. "At what levels does it make sense for a player to give this item to a cohort or hireling instead?" Price it below that WBL.
