Would a set be out of the question?

Star Voter Season 8

Would it be out of the question to create a set? For example could a set of arrows be created, or a pair of daggers? Each item would have it's own abilities.

I have an idea for a small item, but I'm having some troubles justifying the final cost in my mind. I know the additions to making a set could counteract my thoughts.

Thanks in advance.

I would be careful posting questions like this, it could be seen as breaking the anonymous rule.

Thanks Clay.

Small set is no longer entertained. I will leave this here though just in case someone else wanted to see the answer.

If you were talking ammo or some kind of consumable price it per arrow or appropriate unit.

If you're talking about a pair of daggers with unique abilities, discard the notion. Even if they interact (which is fine) they are 2 submissions not one thus earning you a DQ.

The real design question is: If this item cannot stand alone is it truly a Superstar item?

Thanks I'm just cheap. Magic is expensive and I get hung up on 300 gp for the MW quality. I'll just have to get over it.

HOWEVER, I think if it was, say, a dagger that could become two daggers, that would be okay.

Or, imagine a quarterstaff that could become two clubs.

I think a pair of weapons designed to be used together (say rapier and main gauche) with additional abilities when used by someone two weapon fighting could be a neat idea, if pulled off well. Same for any weapon set.

I think it could be a neat idea, but I'm not sure it fills the requirements to be a Superstar entry; it feels like two weapons to me.

If you want to do a set, I'd be more likely to try for a double weapon, like a kusarigama. You could also maybe get away with a double walking stick katana or butterfly swords, as those come in pairs but are listed as single weapons in UE.

It needs to be a single item, but like Jacob says, you can try to make it a double weapon.

Personally, I think this kind of question usually stems from those who wander too far down the path of thinking "more is better"...and that's rarely a good mindset to have when creating an RPG Superstar submission. If this were a wondrous item and you felt it had to be propped up by creating extra abilities (which if done as a weapon would lead you to craft a "set" of weapons), you're essentially venturing into Swiss Army Knife territory, because you're starting to overreach. It's far better to demonstrate creativity and clarity alongside simplicity. Weapon sets or Swiss Army Knife wondrous items usually aren't demonstrating the latter.

But that's just my two cents,

Worth significantly more than that. :)

For sure. Anyone who doubts that Neil has had strong personal experience with this very conundrum need only look at his item from 2009. It's really cool, but it's basically one of those items that follows Sean's rule of "if you bring the Superstar, you can ignore any of the other rules" in that it skirts the line with SAK and, with the number of functions it has, avoids it due to a strong show of skill on Neil's part in how everything ties together.

Excellent information thanks to all.
