Not terribly important at the moment I supposed, but once "meaningful" PvP is intended to start in earnest, I think it would be good to have some sort of mechanism in place to prevent combat logging.
Combat logging = logging out in the middle of combat to prevent loss of life, items, pride.
I've already witnessed it once in a sort of legitimate PvP encounter. We got 1 hit in and the guy logged out. *Poof* We just kind of chuckled and carried on.
I can imagine some of the more PvP focused players like the Unamed Company will be livid if that kind of thing happens regularly.

@ Doc,
The easiest way to prevent combat logging is to prohibit logging out while in combat.
The game already recognizes when your character is in or is out of combat. So blocking the voluntary logging out should be a simple matter.
As for the crash to desktop, that is more complicated I think. Logging out is detectable, but the difference between a CTD and the "Hard Log Out" of closing the client may be indistinguishable.
Character remains persistent in the world for X amount of seconds / minutes. This too would solve the problem you describe. The player can try to log out or have a CTD (real or manufactured) and their toon will be there for the killing anyway.
If their client truly crashed, they can submit a ticket and the "system" should return their lost items. I know this is technically possible, I have done it in other games (EVE in particular).
I have not tried to engage in combat and do a "Hard Log Out" to see if it prevents death of toon. Something to be tested.

If they did this, it could probably be used to duplicate items, having someone kill you after you "CTD" on purpose.

Maybe once or perhaps twice, there is no way to avoid that some might exploit the system. But, GW could take a deeper look at the circumstances of the player and the number of times it "supposedly' happened and say "No" if they feel it is too frequent a petition.

A crash doesn't portect you. I have died at least 5 times while crashing in combat (with monsters).
You come back and the first you see is - you have died.
In some cases you don't even know how.
Look at the chat window. If there are some 'xyz' has left channel general followed by a direct 'xyz' has joined channel general, then the chance is very high that this was an unvoluntary desync / crash.
I even had one instance where my son told me - you just died. I was on my screen in a state of 'no connection' and it was really, really slow while he could see me going down on his screen.
You need to log out to prevent dying. A crash is presistent and you stay in - others are still able to interact with you - including to kill you - as you are still active on the server.
