I think that was the missing piece. I was assuming that even if you didn't pick the same spot, if you stayed there your bonus continued to accumulate, but didn't apply.

In actual fact, if you don't pick current hex as your first choice, bonus is wiped and starts over even if you don't move?

No implication needed. Lee's already said in the past that some groups are still at A, B, C, D.....

The rules update a few weeks back clarified that if you are not in your first choice spot (i.e. if you do not make your current spot your first choice) then no hunker down applies.
