Again, I think this issue comes back to the idea of accounting for pregen gold/item use. Maybe the rule should be that it's OK to sell all the pregen items to pay for raise dead, where the raised character must be able to cover the expense (which begs the question of doing it in the first place).
A basic ruling on accounting for pregen item/gold use cuts off all the abuse without having to resort to special cases. But, it still tends to break down in the event of death of the pregen and a sacrificial, new level 1 character. Then, who pays?
