I've been noticing on the PbP boards there seem to be a lot more players than GMs and plenty of games looking for GMs. So I had this idea, I'm not not sure if anyone has thought of it before.

How about we make it a prerequisite in our PbP games, that anyone who participates as a player, agrees to run GM one PbP game. I know that there is no way to enforce this, and it isn't something that needs to be enforced, but if even half the players actually GM a game there will be a lot more games to play.

What are your thoughts on this?

Like most GMs I would rather a PbP GM have more under their belt than a single game. That said anyone who has at least a star, or by the time they reach 3rd level in PFS should be approached for GMing. True for PbP and face to face games.

In the spirit of your thread, I will recommend at least one player from each of my PbP games to GM. :)

Fair enough, a familiarity with the rules and the game is necessary to play and after just one game it would be difficult to be a GM. Though if someone has had experience outside of PFS as a player/GM that would help.

Also it doesn't have to be an AP. One could always start out with We be Goblins or Fallen Fortress. Simple and straight forward. The nice thing about PbP is that if you aren't 100% on a rule you have the time to check it out, unlike normal play when you need to make a ruling asap.

Interestingly enough having GMed some pbps has gotten me invited to several very excellent pbps that had no open recruitment.

To be fair this isn't just a PbP problem, but one that is seen on all play styles of the game. I do agree that there need to be more GMs though. I am still pretty new to PbP, so I do not know how steep the learning curve to GM one is. I am planning on running one shortly after my first game is finished.

Edit:

I had a secondary thought on this. Instead of trying to put in some rule, why not reward good behavior. What if GMing PbP games got you into PbP games easier? Like saving a spot or two each game for some one who GMs? It is something one of my current PbP GMs tries to do and I think it might help.
