What are a settlement’s responsibilities to its member companies?

3 people marked this as a favorite.

At Open Enrollment many, many new players will burst onto the scene and enter the River Kingdoms. Many settlements will be vying for their attention and allegiance. Only a few of the mass of new players will hit the mark on the first try and choose a settlement that fulfills their needs. But what are those needs?

Here are a few things I think might be important to consider when players decide where to set up shop:

Is this settlement going to be safe? Can I pursue the type of play style I want to, relatively free from the threat of constant attack?

How much input will I have in decisions of the settlement leadership and management?

How are Points of Interest, Outposts (new topic) and other resources going to be divided up? Will leadership play favorites and only assign these to their friends? Will there be a lottery, a vote? If a vote, what sort of voting system will be put in place to handle these decisions?

Are the other companies attracted to this settlement going to compliment my play style, or oppose it?

Am I going to be directed what to do, or will the settlement leadership give me choices in tasks, careers, and activities?

How quickly will settlement leadership be able to take a new issue (let’s say it’s a hot issue that needs a decision pretty quickly), hash out the options and make a decision? Is leadership going to be decisive, or will there be disagreements that will cause a delay in execution of the decision?

Does this settlement have, or might it have, policies that I strongly disagree with?

Is the focus of this settlement aligned with the things I want it to focus on?

As a general rule I would strongly urge those not used to sand box games to take plenty of time selecting a guild rather than taking the first offer. Unlike theme park games guilds are of huge importance in a sand box game and can have a long lasting impact on you even after you leave them.

As an example Eve is a prime candidate. There people can see your entire history of what corporations you have been a member of and for how long. Join the wrong corporation and you might find applications to other corporations turned down flat. Also don't be a guild hopper as in a sandbox game guilds value loyalty greatly.

Choose with care, check out their website, research them on the forums, chat with their members if possible

I think those are some great questions to ask any settlements for which you have interest. I think it also important to bear in mind that no person or group will likely see eye to eye in every single situation. Thus it becomes a matter of give and take and of how much the respective sides are willing to do so.

It's also important for Candidate Charter Companies to figure out what it is they bring to a settlement aside from more bodies. There will be a limited number of settlements, initially, and we don't know how long before more open up. Competition to become a part of one of those initial ones should be fairly tight and I would think most careful settlements are asking the same type questions as some of the ones you have listed here.

Honestly, it's a great question, but it should really be decided between the company and it's settlement... responsibilities, compensation, etc.

I think settlements and companies should have the freedom to determine how "affiliated" they are, and what it is they do with and for one another.
