As happened last night, one of our characters failed to defeat Explosive Runes,
...each character at this location is dealt 2d4 Fire damage,...They had Chain Mail which says,
Recharge this card to reduce Combat damage dealt to you by 2.
Can Chain Mail be used to reduce the damage done by Explosive Runes since the damage done is not specifically Combat damage?

No,
Combat damage is only for combat. If it says All Damage then you are good. A card that would help is the shield of fire resistance or a potion of resistance as they have the ability to stop fire damage.
Note Chain Mail has the banish line below the main paragraph that you could have used I believe.

Thanks very much for the quick replies. That makes sense, and it was brutal... in the extreme. Drew the villain on the first exploration and explosive runes on the second.
Oh my god that is just about as bad as it can get. The only thing worse would be reversing that order so your hands were empty after the explosive runes. I hope you had fun and know not every game will go that way. That is part of what makes it exciting in my opinion.
