I was a bit too young to have many memories of koch, but I do remember voting for him with my grandmother once. He seemed to be a nice enough fellow. I hope he rests peacefully .
Ed Koch on the whole was a very nice fellow, and as much as he sparred with Al Sharpton, even the latter gave him points for being forthright and honest with his opinions.
But if you got on his bad side, he could cluster F-Bomb you with the best of them, like a proper New York mayor should.

The first thing that has always come to mind whenever I have heard his name over the years was this bit of animation.
Never lived anywhere even close to NYC, but I heard of the man back in the day and he was certainly an embodiment of the city from which he came. Rest easy, Mayor.

When Ed Koch ran for his second term as mayor He was on the Democratic, the Republican, AND the Conservative entries for the ballot, matching the feat of his hero Fiorella LaGuardia, the only other mayor I know of, who ran a fusion ticket.
Needless to day the mayoral race that year wasn't exactly full of drama when it came to news coverage. So the media spent all it's time covering the third party challengers making their doomed runs. Interesting thing though, when you don't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning an election, you can be a lot more free with your opinions.
