What the Hex?

I apologize if this question has already been answered in the past but I can't seem to find a definite answer.

What exactly is a Hex? Furthermore, What do they bring to Pathfinder Online, and how will they be implemented?

Hexagonal tiling.

Hexes will be integral part of organizing the game area for the purposes of game engine (probably an equivalent to zones in other MMOs). It will also serve as way of organizing the territory (possibly equivalent to a star system in EVE Online).
