If a publisher picks this up will we see a retail box?

I for one would love to see a Collectors Edition and to have the same hype and fervour surrounding the retail release of this game as Everquest had back in the day. I understand that now with Digital downloads, ect, it is cheaper, but I figured with Paizo's renowned publishing standard, a Collectors Edition box would be a given. Here's Hoping!!!

I don't think they intend to find another publisher at all.

I could be wrong but it would be quite a surprise to me.

The only thing I have to say about publishers involves dropping the f bomb. Since that's not constructive or appropriate... I'll just refrain from going into detail.

I asked them about a boxed edition already here is the response I got:

I know it is really far out, but have you given any thought as to making a tier for a Physical Collector's Edition box? I know a lot of people are interested in this kind of thing, myself included.

Something as simple as a nice box, maybe have the option to get it signed? Include some swag stuff like a cloth map, maybe a 6 in. goblin statue, the soundtrack, an art book, etc.

Thought? Yes. Plans? No. Waaaaaaaay to early.

Well that is still positive, there was no definite "No", just that they haven't put any thought into it yet because its too early. I will continue to cross my fingers and will be pre-ordering one for sure should they decide to do it. As for the publisher, there is no reason why Paizo couldn't diversify and publish the collectors edition on behalf of Goblinworks. It would make sense!

Interesting, concidering that paizo is a publisher.

Paizo is a "classical" publisher of pen-and-paper games and books. Not a publisher as the term is used with computer games (the likes of Electronic Arts, Activision Blizzard and THQ), where the publisher provides (usually) the money, and thus has a huge say in the development of the games being made.

Goblinworks isn't using a publisher to make sure their unique vision is implemented. Thus the Kickstarter(s).

Then he probably shouldn't make such wide sweeping statements and clarify what he means, shouldn't he? A software publisher is not a "classical" publisher, true but he said publisher, didn't he? I'm a big advocate of actually saying what you mean. This is why a this kind of wide sweeping statements are counterproductive. Especially if the person making the statement goes out of their way of implying that nothing good will come out of the statements.

I highly doubt we will be seeing any retail version, or a hard copy of the game. Ryan expressed no interest in dealing with the ESRB in some discussions a while back and the game is not being released in a normal manner. The controlled expansion means that the first 2 years or more of the game will have a line. Not to mention it's F2P so there is no 'box cost'. The best I can imagine for retail, if Ryan decides to mess with the ESRB, is a install disk with one month of game time, and player and alliance pack game codes for $20, and that probably wouldn't be made available until 2019 when the game's doors are completely open.

If you want a 'collectors edition' I suggest pledging at the crowdforger level and adding on the print pack. That's a better deal than any other collectors edition has ever given.

Having seen how often good games were derailed by the meddling of publishers who have eyes only for immediate profit, I hope Goblinworks will have the wisdom (and capital) to retain full control of their project. Ryan has stated several times that they are looking for a growth and profit model more in keeping with EVE rather than the spike and crash of most other MMOs. I would rather see them start off relatively small, having only as many players as they can actually service, and then grow that very loyal community over time.
