Happy Holidays! Ingame events ideas!

Pathfinder Online

first off I wish to say happy holidays to everyone on the forums, everyone at GW and paizo.

Secondly, I had not noticed a thread for ingame events (unless i missed it browsing just now) So i figured this would be a great time to open up a discussion on specifically holiday events in game, Most games have them, usually a winter event around Christmas time as there are many cultures/religions that have a holiday around now. Some MMOs have seasonal events one for all four seasons. I figured why should Pathfinder be different in this regard when there is so much rich lore in the source material that could be used to create special in game festivities for Golarion themed holidays?

maybe a harvest festival? a a winters solstice/new year sort of celebration in the winter? a spring fling in the spring? the possibilities are truly endless what would you as a player like to see? For all you DMs out there, what would you like to do or see from a DM perspective?

Assuming the game has weather effects, day and night cycles, and even seasons i would love to seeat least 2 events per year, one celebrating the new year/birthday of the game, and another celebrating maybe the fall or spring? The events I think of would have some minor quests to help out various factions and such, with typical rewards for such quests, where the good stuff is though would be mini games and hanging out with your fellow players in a holiday setting just to relax.

I know this is something most likely would not be high priority for the dev staff and would be probably a year after release before it would happen if ever, but I feel it would be a fun discussion non the less.

I'd like to see the seasonal events, maybe tied to the equinoxes and solstices. They could start as simply some seasonal decorations or NPCs (flower garlands, caroling bards, etc.), with the programmers adding a mini-quest each year. I don't want to see something like WoW's Winter Veil festival, though; that's too pop culture-themed and I think GoblinWorks should do something more creative.

In the spirit of player-created content, though, I'd love to see what settlements are able to do themselves. A Founders' Day parade, or a feast on a patron deity's special day. (Do they have special days? I'm new to the Pathfinder setting, so don't know.)

I LOVE winter veil but it has no place in my PFO I want original as can be with the source material, stick to the lore or work something out with paizo to create new lore. Would absolutely love to see the solstices used, so many things they could work in with that.

Example the summer solstice could be a festivel to Cayden Cailean, Sarenrae, Erastil, and Gozreh. The winter solstice could be some sort of festival remembering the dead, looking forward to the birth of the new year and incorporating typical harvest festival type stuff.

and like you said, with this being a sand box mmo and all, we could just make these events ourselves, no need for a dev team to create them for us after all. As far as the the deities themselves having lore based holidays and special days or times i am unsure, i never got to far into the lore outside the core rulebook, advanced players guide, ultimate magic and ultimate combat as i typically use those books for rules and create my own worlds from there. I have been meaning to see if there is a book written by paizo specifically as a source book about the gods, for use by divine casters and paladins for pathfinder.

y'know, they might just leave events as something that players do for themselves. Or, they might be done by NPC factions.

Hey Darsch,

so far there's been a little back and forth on this subject. On the one hand, back in Sept. Ryan was against them:

I think in general I would rather not do GM run events. If the players aren't creating epic content as emergent behavior we're not doing our design jobs right.

That's different from saying there couldn't be epic content created by the game engine. There certainly should be.

I think GM run events prove in the long run to be things that cause a lot more problems than they solve. They tend to introduce all sorts of concerns about misconduct, they often cater to a very small portion of the players, and they also often misfire as the players creatively out think the plans of the developers in realtime.

But then the Goblin Squad/New Reward Tier post he said that Crowdforger Alpha pledgers will be able to "be a "cast member" playing a monster during an event organized by the team."

So there will be some in game events, but not sure what kind exactly. I do think a seasonal calendar would rock.

I am perfectly okay with players doing their own events, we did it in star wars galaxies so much that the dev team made it possible for us to actually have the ability to spawn and script our own npcs to fight and stuff.

I expect several of the Golarion religions should have their special days of the (accelerated) year. Some rituals/quests/settlement buffs/whatever could be linked to those.
Personally I think porting real-world holidays into the game is silly and versimilitude breaking. Also several of the holidays typically celebrated in MMOs are american ones the rest of the world don't have the same traditions for.

As long as the holidays are Golarion holidays, then I absolutely think they should be recognized in-game, in all sorts of ways.

Agreed. I don't like celebrating real world holidays in games unless they are somehow tied to the lore.

I kind of agree with the let players celebrate them themselves thing too, but I wouldn't mind seeing in-game items related to festivals become craft-able at the right time of year.

hence why i suggested seasonal holidays possibly tied to the solstices. easily tied into the different gods. could even them them slightly after Greece/roman festivities as most of the gods in PF have similarities to the Rome and Greece mythologies. Cayden Cailen is a shoe in for Dionysus for example.
