Restore balance to the force

In order to balance out the disturbance in the force from my tongue in cheek thread about some of the early bad submission, we now return you to my regularly scheduled Paula Abdul routine:

I guarantee you that NONE of the submissions I was talking about came from any of the forum regulars. If you did even one second of homework you could not possibly have submitted any of the items I was referring to. So...breathe, relax, it wasn't your item I was talking about.

You guys know me. I am all about submitting. You can't win if you don't try. So get off the fence and (ok I used that AC/DC reference already so nevermind).

But you also know you have to respect the contest. That's why I, in particular, hate joke submissions. Do your basic homework. Read the rules. If you are reading this thread, I am certain you have done that.

Don't be discouraged. In fact, you should be encouraged. Some of you may be out there saying "oh my gosh Sean and Neil and Jason and Clark and everyone have done so much to help the contestants year after year that means there arent going to be bad submissions anymore. How will I ever stand out?" The good news is that despite all our help there are still a ton of people not even close to complying with the rules. So take a shot! Submit an item! Do your homework and submit a good item and who knows what could happen!

You can do it!

So, go on and submit an item already! Don't be afraid. Fear is the path to the dark side.

Fear is the mind-killer

More Google bait I suppose.

Anyways, I seek the path to the top 32 at least, and a cool tag on my forum name that shows it. I'm impressed by the guys who have a single such from previous events, but I am in awe at a guy like Tom (above) who got far three times!

Totally agree - but you see, Tom is now in an interesting position. We have come to expect the wonderful all the time from such a consistent designer. So having those three labels means he is under constant expectation from the community. Tom has all the pressure ...

You could say the rest of us are actually quite lucky - if we haven't made it and have an off year, no one will know unless we choose to reveal it. The pressure begins when you make that cut, that's when your name becomes listed and the expectation of performance from the community gets brought to bear :)

Having made it to the top 4, he can't even compete anymore though, right?

Nope - but he can write lots of stuff for Paizo and 3rd party publishers for us all to buy.

It doesn't hurt to enter. After all, Clark won't name names. :)

Creativity (having a cool idea) and competence (following the template and expressing your idea well) will get you very far this round. OK, you need to do a little bit of "homework" to avoid the common pitfalls, but they're easy to avoid.

Uh oh. Here come the gom jabbar entries.

I've submitted about six-hundred different lightsabers. One of them's bound to have enough typos in it to be mistaken for a wondrous item and win this whole thing.
