Jon Peterson has written an amazing history of our hobby, Playing at the World, that is must reading. For example, did you know that David Wesely was the very first Game Master (as we know them today)? He rediscovered the idea of a game ref with escencially Rule 0 powers from a war game book written in 1880. He GMed Dave Arneson who co-created D&D.
It's a detailed read but worth it if you care about the roots of the Pathfinder RPG.
