PFO Servers

By my own admission I'm pretty new to MMO's, having only played in SWTOR and various NWN PW's. I'm curious how many servers PFO is going to have?

In the example of SWTOR there are a variety of servers which have identical content, that players can choose to log into. However, since PRO is going to be such a dynamic MMO, which will change based on the actions of the players and guilds. Is PFO going to go down the multiply server route? or only have a single server that all will play on?

If there are multiply servers then each PFO server will be very different due to player created settlements and actions. Either option would be cool, as it could be fun to log onto a different server to see how it has evolved due to the actions of players.

As far as I know, there will be just the one server.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Ryan has stated that, ideally, they will only have a single server. They might be forced to have more than one if there are insurmountable technological problems, but their goal is a single world.

And I am very hopeful that they'll be able to achieve that goal :)

The first time, I realized there were multiple servers/shards... it reminded me of an episode of Red Dwarf: "What, you guys didn't find the island of eternal pleasure?!"

I digress, I think single server is best option for a number of reasons for a small, growing community and potentially complex web of player organizations. :)

It works fine for Eve Online. I do wonder about where the server will be placed though. Although Iceland would make an ideal location, Goblinworks isn't an Icelandic company. I guess perhaps somewhere on the Eastern seaboard?

My guess would be somewhere in Redmond, Washington or its surrounding area...

EVE's server isn't in Iceland. It's in London. (And Shanghai for the Chinese EVE server).

Huh, goes to show what I know! Any chance that the Pathfinder Online server farm will be in London too then?

Always a chance. Unlikely though. Seattle has plenty good enough connectivity. EVE is in London because it was the closest point to Iceland that had good connectivity - there's nothing special about London that makes it uniquely suited for MMO servers.

Okay, thanks for the information! I'm just stuck on the old FPS ways of needing low latency but I realise that isn't such a sticking point for MMOs.
