Question Regarding Treasure in First Steps, Part 1: In Service To Lore

GM Discussion

Hello fellow GMs,
I was reading over the encounter with Zarta and I have a question regarding possible treasure the PCs can obtain.

In the Module before combat with the Imp its written, "She goes over to  the desk in her study, opening a drawer and drawing out an exquisite  silver letter opener shaped like a dagger(treat as a master work silver  dagger)."

At the end of the combat under the section labeled Treasure its written, "treasure: If the PCs ask nicely, Zarta allows one of them to keep the silver letter opener, but only if they agree to come back and visit her when they have more free time."

For me this reads that one of my players could get a free Master work silver dagger since its not listed on the Chronicle sheet.

What do you all feel this means? has anyone run into this before and given the dagger as a freebie to the player that asked?

Thanks

You only get to use in-scenario items for free during the scenario.

In order to be able to continue to use any item after the scenario is over you have to purchase the item. There are no freebies, and the item would be available for purchase by all characters, not just the one who might have used it during the scenario.

A masterwork silver dagger isn't listed on the chronicle sheet because this item is in the "always available" category.

Edit: This is for PFS play, of course. If you run the scenario as part of a non-PFS game you are free to do what you like with found items.

I would concur with JohnF and have treated those types of items as plot devices that do not carry over from scenario to scenario.

(Like a letter that you have to deliver or a key that you use for a chest that exists only in a specific module/scenario: once delivered, you don't need the letter; once opened, you don't need the key since you won't come back to the chest again)

Ok, well thank you both for your input. I just wanted to be sure since it was a weapon, which could be taken to other adventures. Didn't want to have the PCs miss out on a sweet deal if they uncover that option. But I will defer to yall and say they hand back the silver dagger to the PS or in game they return to her chambers that night and return the dagger. :)

Thanks a ton

So it's not that--the dagger is just like anything else they ever gain in any scenario. At the end, they are assumed to hand over anything that has a monetary value to the Society in exchange for their GP reward. Then, if they choose, they can spend some of their GP to instead 'keep' the item (though of course, this is muddied a bit if more than one character chooses to keep the item, but that's the idea).

If the PCs don't want to hand over everything to the Society, it doesn't matter, as the Decimvirate or their alter-ego noted Master Spy Michael Brock will figure it out and steal all the items when they least expect it, leaving the proper gold piece reward like some kind of masked tooth fairy.
