New GM trying to ease new players into PFS

I've gotten a couple dozen PFS and Serpent's Skull sessions under my belt and I figured it was time to start GMing. So, while I was visiting family last weekend, I brought along the Beginner's Box. They enjoyed themselves, and I got my brother and a friend to agree to play online with me as GM (using Fantasy Grounds). They both played a lot of Neverwinter Nights, so they're already pretty familiar with the system. Now, because my brother's in the army, PFS is a better idea than a campaign because his scheduling isn't stable long-term.

My question is: would it be better for Beginner's Box players to run a couple of modules like We Be Goblins, Fallen Fortress, and whatever's the Free RPG Day module for this year to get them used to the full Pathfinder rule system before adding on the additional layer of PFS? Or are the First Steps modules good enough?

I believe that the First steps serves as a very valuable introduction to the game. They can then make informed decisions about which faction they wish to support after finishing up the line. If you would like to play first steps online, I would be happy to serve as an online GM if you would like to play with your brother, that way your group can play without having to put up a GM.

First off, it's great of you to offer to GM, but I've already played First Steps, so I'd like to do it. There's a Yahoo group for online PFS, so finding players or GMs isn't a problem.

I know First Steps is a good intro to PFS; what I'd like to know is if throwing new players into PFS straight from Beginner's Box is fine. I had a couple of "normal" sessions experience with the PFRPG system before I started PFS. I guess I didn't choose my title carefully enough.

I think that First steps is perfect for you. Normal Pathfinder is exactly what PFS is in First Steps, because most of the PFS specific stuff is explained in game. Good Luck with your game.

Don't forget that there is a Pathfinder Society Beginners Box Creation guide listed on the Beginner's Box page here on the site. That document will help you to transition their characters more easily into PFS play.

My advice is not to be afraid to just run them through a scenario first if that's what you want to do. The First Steps are great for picking up gameplay mechanics and introducing the factions, which does make it a great choice to start out with, but there are lots of great low-level scenarios out there for them to cut their teeth on.

You don't necessarily need to over think it. Just roll with it, and have fun!

And don't hesitate to post here if you have questions or concerns.

That's what this forum is for. :-)

Have Fun!
