A one-shot Call of Cthulhu...

Other RPGs

Hey folks,

We're starting Curse of the Crimson Throne next month and the guys wanted to play a game of "something else" in the meantime, so I'm throwing them all in the meat grinder of Call of Cthulhu!

I've had all these books in my library and I've been sitting on them waiting for this day, lol. Of course, I chose to have them do one of the short scenarios since we're just gonna play one day of it. (I won't say which, because I know some of the players lurk around here sometimes, haha)...

In my prep for this game though, I found a real pleasure in researching old 1920s documents and photos on the net to use as hand outs and such... A real work of archeology (I actually felt like an investigator myself!). It's incredible what you can find on the web that you can use as game material... From actual dated maps, to restaurant menus, to pictures of places and things, all of which existed at that time and place where the scenario happens.

I've GOT to do these more often...

CoC rocks!!!

And to add to the creepy-factor, just knowing that the damn place ACTUALLY exists and you could theoretically hop in the car and go there today sends chills down my spine. It sort of pushes that make-belief right up to the reality line.

(A bit like watching the Blair Witch Project and knowing that YOU could go in those same woods right now is pretty creepy to me... lol)

Especially for those of us in the NE. A couple of weeks ago I was hiking up around the Quabbin reservoir, one of the potential inspirations for the site in the Colour Out of Space.

OTOH, for the Blair Witch Project I just couldn't get over the idiocy of the kids in that movie. You're lost in the woods in Maryland. This isn't Alaska or even Maine. Follow that stream you found for a little while and you'll probably find a highway.

I love Call of Cthulhu one shots; there's no pressure on you to make sure your character survives (for the sake of campaign continuity).

Didn't the Quabbin Reservoir also make an appearance at the end of Stephen King's Dreamcatcher?

In fairness, this depends on where in Maryland. If it is where I think it is, they're awful close to the much larger Pennsylvania and could very easily meander over the state line none the wiser. Or worse, West Virginia given the shootin' inklin's of some of the locals...

Still, they were lost in the woods and walked away from the stream instead of just following it downstream.

You can wander in circles for a very long time, even in a fairly small wilderness, but the river won't. Follow it to civilization.

Did this ever actually happen?

I been thinking about a CoC game.

It seems like this is a pretty solid group of people.
