They're remaking Judge Dredd?

Grand Lodge

This surprised me.

I didn't even know they had plans for this and they're in post-production and release is slated for this year?

Was I living under a rock or has it been kept under the radar?

I'm trying to view this, but the loading takes forever. :(

This news is actually several months old, but it has not been very well advertised since just the last day or two.

The Exchange

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Well it is staring Karl Urban aka Doc "Bones" McCoy V2.0 and they say he does not take off his helmet the entire movie. Now if they only use the Anthrax tune as a theme song.

DROKK IT!

Grand Lodge

Is it just me or does the helmet look a little to bulky?

But I think I might give the movie a chance. The 95 movie wasn't all that bad when you take it as a popcorn action movie flick. Then it's not so terrible.

Yep the helment stays on.

Other good stuff is;
The roadmasters don't look like fiberglass body kits were used to make them and they don't fly.
It's not a bad comedy disguised as a worse action flick.
Absolutly no anoying wisecracking sidekicks.
Blood, blood will be shown on film.
Judge Anderson.

In their defence, Justice Dept aerial units have been in the strip for decades. The technology is certainly there to combine them with the standard Lawmaster.

I've always thought the character would work best as an ongoing series (Hill Street Blues, Law and Order, etc), rather than individual films. The episodic nature of the typical strip lends itself better to the 'crime of the week', while still allowing for a series metaplot investigating some particularly troublesome criminal mastermind (P.J. Maybe, etc).

If they can manage to fit two cases per episode (like Law and Order, CSI) that could satisfy the competing markets for the 'satirical comedy' and 'serious dystopian commentary', while leaving the occasional film to scratch the itch for 'balls-out explosion-fest', a la Judge Cal/Cursed Earth/Block War/Apocalypse War/Judda Bloodline/Mechanismo Project, et al.

Give every story (and vilain) the room they need to tell the tale they deserve. What I particularly dislike in films, is when several plotlines are jammed together, in a way that wastes their potential.

As cool as Dredd is, I'm more hopeful that this will do well enough for someone to develop movies or series out of some other 2000AD properties. This A.B.C. Warriors teaser was made a few years ago, but I guess nothing ever came of it. I'd love to see this or something based on Nemesis the Warlock.

I read somewhere that 2000AD are very reluctant to hand over the rights to any of their other properties - the first Dread Movie upset a lot of fans....

Shadow Lodge

Just a nitpick, for one of my personal pet-peeves. This will almost certainly be a new adaptation, not a remake of the existing film.

That makes sense. I'd rather see it done right if it's done at all.

Rebellion Developments owns the 2000A.D. catalogue now. I don't know how much control they have over the actual characters, but maybe they'd be more open to it since they okayed this movie. They've made video games based on Rogue Trooper and Judge Dredd and published the Judge Dredd RPG through Mongoose afterall.

I'm waiting for a DR and Quinch movie myself. Animated by Pixar. Definitly an R rating.

I saw another pic from the Dredd remake with Urban on the motorcycle. It was a basic looking bike. Regular size tires. Should have went with what they had in the comic with the bigger tires.

I loved the cheesy version, and am looking forward to the more serious version. The understand that a lot of fans were let down by the earlier film, but it had stallone in it - you had to know what was coming.

I would love a Nemisis the Warlock, Slaine or Strontium Dog movie.
