Feat repacement

Silver Crusade

I'd like to know the general attitude toward allowing a character to repick a spent feat (not a specifically granted feat) when they take a class that has that feat. For example, a cleric who has heavy armor proficiency being allowed to replace that feat when he takes a level in holy vindicator, or a ranger replacing endurance once he reaches 3rd. I'm not aware of any way to abuse this- even for a human magus taking medium and heavy armor proficiency at 1st (that's two feats not being used on other things until he gets to 7th and 14th).

It wouldn't include things like allowing an unarmed fighter who takes a level in monk to repick the improved unarmed strike feat; it is specifically granted by both classes.

I can't speak for the General Attitude, but I'm pretty free with feat retraining. I do make a rule that you can only retrain a given feat slot once every 4 levels though, to avoid frequent shuffling.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

One option per level-up. (Feat, spell, talent, whatever.)

That so horribly favors the Wizards and Clerics whose only real option is feats :P

Wizards and Clerics care about their feats? o.O

Not so much xD, but Rogues and Barbarians care about their feats and their talents/rage powers, while some Oracles care about their feats and talents (revelations) AND spells known.

Guess they better choose wisely then. :)

I allow my players to revamp their characters between sessions as much as they'd like, with only two restrictions, the rp elements of their character never change (most important aspect of that character anyhow), and they cannot change their race or class. However, they're free to better optimize their class to their playstyle mood, or as roles might be needed due to attendance. Players are always learning new things about their class in live-play, or they want to experiment with an Archetype; and this definitely increases their over-all satisfaction.

I allow feat replacement for feats listed in the Class Abilities section of a class, like Endurance or Scribe Scroll. I would never allow them to replace feats found under "Weapon and Armor Proficiency". I would be wary of allowing a feat swap with restrictions like "only when he wears light, medium, or no armor". They must also pick a feat that would have been allowed when they aquired the original feat.

What is the 3.5 feat or spell or psionic power that allows a character to swap feats?

I'm totally OK with this.

Oh... I guess all those fighters don't count?

You raise an interesting point, although one could argue that in a multi-'option' replacement system, 'Fighter Bonus Feats' would fall under Talents.
