Added a reply of my own to the article. A nice review even with the misspellings.
My only nitpicks were:
The only things I would like to add are:
* Pathfinder does not use "facing" rules, so I could potentially see pawns with different images on each side confusing that fact (even though I do agree it would have been nice aesthetically).
* IMO since this set is an introduction to a larger system, Paizo would have been remiss not to provide guidance on additional *key* products for new customers. My only beef here is that their Gamemastery Guide would have made more sense to tout than their novel line. Otherwise I found the ads for the Core Rulebook, Bestiary, and World Guide poignant, useful, and unobtrusive, certainly not spam.

Amusing that he called the 1983 Red Box the "original".
You may have misunderstood- he didn't claim that the 1983 Red Box was the original version of D&D - he claimed that he played the original 1983 Red Box - as opposed to the recent Red Box for 4th edition D&D.
So I think he was accurate in what he said.

Allow me to point out that the woodgrain box preceded the White Box collector's edition.

Why would anyone take issue with the ad flyers in the bottom of the box?
Clearly, this in intended to be an introduction to Pathfinder product, so it would seem obvious that it would include ads. I expect he would have complained about the lack of information on where to go next had they been absent.
I suppose if Paizo would have wanted to be super self-serving, they would have packed the ads on top.

I can't think of a single boxed game I have bought in recent years that didn't have ads for other products made by the company.
Whatever.

LMAO - this shows an utter lack of research into the whole PnP gaming genre, granted the publicity is excellent for PFRPG and Paizo in general, but a quick report about the distinction between red box, AD&D, TSR, WoTC and Paizo should have been in there...come on, this is the age of the internet, not where you have to phone round and badger knowing people anymore.

8 people marked this as a favorite. |

Once again, we are both Paizo's greatest asset and its greatest detriment.
He could've called it "throatwarbler mangrove" for all I care -- if anyone who's a geek or gamer sees this positive review, and gives PF a try, then it's an awesome coup, not to the detriment of the game. They can learn the niggling tidbits later, like "what box came first," or "how Topher Kohan can't spell worth a damn."

Heck-fire, man ... kudos to CNN for having a geek blog at all.
Good, favorable review.
It is curious that he took exception to the ads.
Everything you buy in a box comes with a self-promotion.
Teaching Company Lecture? Full-color catalog of your favorite subjects.
Toaster oven? A list of vendors from Bangkok to Bangor.
I enjoy like catalogs.
With regard to the 1983 box set, the guy probably just doesn't know that OD&D dates back ten years earlier. As a collector and a 47-year-old guy, I happen to; but we are a small niche within a small niche.
And Paizo must be doing well.
The products I've read in the bookstores, and the handful that I own, are very high quality.

Seriously. Getting mainstream coverage is worth celebrating.
Now, clearly CNN has obviously cut costs by not having their bloggers send their copy through a proofreader before posting. Unfortunately a common practice these days; copy editors are considered non-essential. (One reason why I largely ended up a secretary rather than the proofreader/editor I wanted to be, although I still get some decent freelance work on occasion.)
But I'm not going to blast the writer when he gave a good game a good review.
(Also honestly? I don't think the ads are a bad idea, and particularly make sense for the beginner's box, but I do get sick of the little slips of paper advertising other games that show up in my order boxes, just 'cause they flutter all over the place and I always find them in random parts of my apartment.)

Technical writing is one of the few areas where you can still have a career as proofreader or editor. I'm a scientist ... and a thief :-) ... but all I do these days is develop and edit technical documents.
It's worth considering, if you haven't already.
I write short fiction as a hobby, but there is no way to forge a living out of that, sadly.

Very good review.
When the worst thing the reviewer complains about is ad spam in the box--something there's been in every edition--it's a pretty good review.
Also, I much prefer ad spam as separate sheets in the box which you can throw away rather than pages bound into actual books (especially when those include coupons you have to clip out).

So true.
You could even post it up on a local bulletin board if you want to support the company instead of throwing it away.

Now if only 3.5e had the same amount of publicity back in the day. *Sigh*
Oh, well. Perhaps what I am hoping for will some day happen. Then again, I doubt the chances of that happening any time soon.
Now if you'll all excuse me, I have some advertising of my own to do elsewhere. *Casts Fly and disappears from the scene*

Paizo (Greek)
Meaning:
1. to play like a child
2. to play, sport, jest
3. to give way to hilarity, esp. by joking singing, dancing
They named themselves appropriately in every way.

Mazra
BTW - I had to post something at the CNN website. I cannot believe someone that receives a paycheck can complain about a company trying to sell or market their other products. It is downright hypocritical when you look at the very page this review was posted, you will see banner ads for other shows on CNN.
